Nome: Day 4 - An Exciting Finish & A Marriage Proposal!

The coldest day since arriving in Nome also proved to be the most exciting!

The entire family gathered on the barren terrain five miles out of town to see Travis pass through the last miles of the Iditarod race. Can I tell you how incredibly proud we all are of his accomplishments?!

After a long and very frigid wait (during which we marveled at how Travis had been out in this for days!) we finally spotted him and the dogs coming down the trail.

Over the last 22 miles of the race - from Safety to Nome - Travis managed to pass three mushers to make for an exciting finish, with he and his team looking strong!

He has literally dreamed of running this race since he was three years old...

...and later shared how he was overcome with emotion over the last few days just thinking about it all.

His adorable girlfriend Sarah, who is also a musher, had been anxiously awaiting his arrival and was thrilled to be reunited with Travis and the dogs.

And then Travis gave Sarah (and the rest of us) a surprise of her life by proposing to her on the finish line!

Now that is how you do it.

  1. Well, that brought tears to my eyes this morning. What an extraordinary young man. To think he is the same age as my youngest daughter and to have accomplished such a feat. Although she too has such determination really. Congratulations to Travis and Sarah and I am sure this 1000 mile endurance race is just the beginning of their incredible journey.
