Best Intentions For The Year Ahead

Yes, I've been basically missing in action for the last week in the land of social media. With the kids on holiday break I did as little work as possible, and have to say... it was divine! I even could be caught sleeping in a few mornings, which had me wondering how on earth I'd be able to get back into the swing of things when this Monday morning arrived, forcing us to all get back on schedule!

But I'm back and looking forward to digging into this new year. I am never one to make specific New Year's resolutions, but I have been giving quite a bit of thought as to what success means to me at this point in my life. Right now I would define success as having enough time to take good care of myself and my family. And I will admit over the last couple of years my days have been busy to the extent that while I have been successful at checking off all the "to-do's" of each day, often I'm doing so by skimming or racing through tasks and activities. Things that to be done best, need to be given a bit more care and thoughtful attention.

Two years ago I was counting down the few short months until turning 50, and my goal was to reach that birthday feeling physically great and to be busy involved in work I was loving. And yes, I reached that birthday feeling grand! It's funny how when you have a big event approaching, be it a major birthday, a big reunion, a wedding or similar major event how you can become inspired to be at your best. It becomes fairly easy to get motivated to make whatever changes are needed to feel fantastic when that event arrives. The hard part? Keeping it up! Over the last two years I've found myself cutting corners on working out, and a myriad of other priorities. As a result I know its time to check in again, re-prioritize and make any necessary changes accordingly...so I can say it like Maya!

What is most important to you these days and how does that effect how you would describe success?

  1. That was beautifully put. I am striving for balance. I finally get that putting yourself on the top of the list is a gift to your family.

  2. I like this post. I think being able to switch off, relax, sleep in and so on are important. To me right now, success is taking care of myself which I tend not to do enough of. As a result, I believe I will not be able to tend to everything else I am responsible for and that which is important to me to the best of my abilities. Great things to come this year for me....

  3. Being mentally and physically at my peak is always important to me but you're right that it's an ongoing effort. It's so easy to put that aside when the rest of life takes over. That's exactly what I love about a new year. It's a time to stop, think, evaluate and take action. Hoping you find your peace and balance again very soon.

  4. Wonderful post. Being a new empty nester, I am in the midst of defining what that means now. Life is definitely different. But, I do have to agree with Maya!

  8. As this new year begins I too am searching for that balance of taking care of myself and managing some new opportunities and adventures. Bottom line...I NEED to get back to the gym! I always feel better, physically and mentally, when I maintain a regular exercise schedule. Amen to Maya...she is so wise!

  9. It seems balance is the biggie for everyone! I've had the luxury of not working while in Dubai so it's a little easier for me than most. But 2012 was a big health-issue year for me so I'm hoping that all of that is behind me and I can focus on other things this year. I hope 2013 brings you continued success and balance xo
