Okay, sometimes I get an email inquiring what my "beauty secrets" are - which makes me chuckle. You wouldn't be asking that if you saw me right about now, after a night with not quite enough sleep and sitting at my computer in the early morning catching up on some work before the day begins!
But if I have one beauty secret to share it is to protect your skin! I've done this my entire life. Growing up in northern Alaska and spending the first summers as a young adult inside working around the clock at a fisheries to pay for school, I didn't actually have much of a chance to see a great deal of sun anyway. However, by the time I had more leisurely summers and lived in climates where it actually shined brightly, I had observed the affects of too much sun exposure and decided it would be smart to make a habit of wearing sun screen and avoid excess exposure when possible.
There is an article in the current issue of House of Fifty listing favorite sun screens for the face and body, as well as hats, sunglasses with UV 400 protection for the eyes and lip balms for the lips, which need protection as well.

And it's not just for beauty.
This recently hit home when a friend learned she had skin cancer during a routine scan of her skin.
Luckily it was found early and she is doing well!

And if you just don't feel at your best without a glow,
try this line of products suggested by HOF's beauty editor Mimi Inman.
I have to say, when I see her and she is looking so gorgeous with her bronzed glow...
which was obtained the FakeBake way...I'm sold!

Ive been in the sun all my life, and Im afraid damage is already done. There are such great products out there now, and sunscreen in foundation makeup is a must! I remember when we put zinc oxide on our faces as kids! ( well that didn't last, once I got vain!)Then we went to iodine in baby oil as teens to get a good burn. Oh god, that is sacrilegious now.

Oh you are so lucky. I am a blonde haired, green eyed girl with almost albino white skin and I was born and raised in Arizona. I had wayyy too much sun exposure. I preach about it to my daughter all the time.
I once read an article where a doctor said we wouldn't need any anti-wrinkle creams if people used sunscreen all their life. Of course I also have a vitamin D problem so you do need just a little bit :)
I try to follow that regime as well, wearing moisturizer with sunscreen! I tell my girls that as well. My mom has fabulous skin at 70 because she did not tan, and I think my skin looks great for 40 ish because I too avoided sun. It was living in Virginia and being exposed to all that sun that put me in the habit of wearing sunscreen, especially when I noticed a sun spot on left side of my face, right where the light would hit while driving in a car!
I worked with a woman that was on a medication that prevented her from being in the sun. She had been on it for years & years. You should have seen her skin. Gorgeous! And not just her face, but her hands, arms, everywhere.
I wish I could turn back time from the years growing up in Hawaii absolutely baking myself! Oh, I had so much fun! But I should have worn sunscreen!
Yes, as I California girl I am all about sun protection. Thank goodness for self tanner! It saves me from looking like Casper in the summer months!
thanks so much for posting this! just by looking at your skin in pics, i had a sneaking suspicion that you wear sunscreen quite often. this is something i have done religiously since i was about 18 & i do think it's paying off now & will pay off even more so later.
This really is wonderful article ! I simply love’d it !toko baju muslim
Yay for self tanners! I did my share of baking in the sun and tanning beds.....not listening to my mother. I can't undo what I've done but I'm all about sunscreen, hats, sunglasses and self tanners now! So important!!
I am totally paying for my younger days of sun worshiping and it sucks! I should have listened to everyone when they said "dont forget the SPF". Wrinkles and sun spot are already all over my face and its awful. These days its all about SPF, hats and covering up when I go outside. I need to keep the wrinkles from getting worse at this point :)
