Cleaning Up: Feeling Better About A Room For Free!

A room that has actually been causing me to feel anxious upon entering for quite some time now has been the master closet. Over the past couple years it has become a dumping ground for leftover odds and ends from DIY projects, old keepsakes I've had a hard time parting with or figuring out where to store and items of clothing or accessories that I should have parted with ages ago. Entering has been an encounter with "old baggage," but I finally had enough! With an upcoming garage sale as motivation, in just a couple hours a fresher space was created that now feels great to be in!

Just piles of stuff thrown here and there - leftover frames, random foam pieces and oodles of magazine clippings from projects completed years ago! It was hard to even step foot into the closet.

Ah. But not now!! This large mirror has been buried behind frames and pictures for too long, but now I can get around to hanging it.

I can see what I have to wear...

...and with old materials from design projects tossed I have a great place for shoes, bags and jewelry.
My husband walked in and was so impressed he took a couple hours and tackled his side of the closet.

{Vintage Lighting from Monticello...hum, that would be fun to add in the closet!}

Now that I have a clean canvas, I'm looking up at the boring light fixtures and tall ceilings in the closet and thinking I need to head back to Monticello to score some funky light fixtures. And maybe even paint? Don't hold your breath, I may get around to that in another year, but...

Why oh why did I wait so long to simply clean up this space! What a difference, and it didn't cost a cent.

  1. Your closet looks great! The red dresser is my favorite part - maybe this will motivate me to get busy in the boys' closets.

  2. A++!!!! I love this! As an organizer, I love to see people tackling those little areas of their house that are quietly but very certainly nagging at them and weighing them down. You whipped that closet into shape!

  5. I bet you love walking in there now. And I spy some very cute wedges, my friend. That is fantastic that the hubby worked some magic on his side as well.

  6. Looks great! I loove that dresser! I clean and organize my closet...but then I get dressed and it's a disaster all over again. I'm a chronic thrower of things that need to be hung up on top of the chest of drawers I have in my closet!

  7. Great job! - there is nothing more satisfying then finally getting into those parts of the house that have been left behind for so long. I bet you walk in there over and over again just to look at it!

  9. That is an inspiring post! I need to pull everything out of mine and start organizing! I don't have a walk in , just a looooong closet, but it sure can be daunting to go through a heaping pile of shoes, etc. Thanks for the motivation..

  10. You know, I've done a lot of updates to my home since moving in, but seriously, this is one of the best so far, in terms of enjoying my home!! I can't tell you how happy I feel walking in and seeing everything I need to start my day just waiting for me - rather than piles of stuff strewn about weighing me down. A lesson learned in the power your environment has over you!!

  16. I recently did another go at my closet. I have been doing it in stages. I finally feel like I am almost there. I need to pretty-up a few containers so they go better with the look of my closet, but then I will be done! UNTIL winter hits and I have to bring in all my winter clothes!! I have a walk-in closet also. I was calling it my throw-in closet!! lol,
