Exercise: Love It, Hate It or Tolerate It?

Exercise. Do you love it or hate it, or simply tolerate it because it's good for you? My take on it has fluctuated in each direction over the years, but one thing I know for certain: I'm soooooo much happier and content when exercise is a part of my daily life.

In the first issue of House of Fifty we ran a story on walking, featuring a running/walking group based here in Oregon, Sole Sisters. I participate in their events, and am busy training for the half marathon in May and hoping to get on a team for the Hood to Coast event in August. (The walking versions, fyi!)

I've been training with my friend Nicole, who wrote the HOF story and recently introduced me to the RunKeeper app. It's fantastic in my opinion, despite mixed reviews at the iTunes store.

It tracks time, pace, distance, route and even calories if you wish. I am particularly found of the kind voice that provides updates at specified intervals, which I find encourages me to keep moving at a decent pace.

And I said a year ago I didn't want a smart phone....ha, how times have changed!
Do you have a favorite app that helps you get moving?

  1. I hate exercising when it's time to do it, but I love how I feel afterward. Once I get into it it's great, but starting it up again once you've stopped for a while is pure torture. Good luck on your half marathon. I did one a while back...it's not too bad.

  2. I have a love-hate relationship! Truth...I hate to drag my body out of bed at the crack of dawn (which is the only time I have to exercise) and punish it! But I so love the feeling afterwards. It feels rewarding and I feel as if I've accomplished something and it motivates me throughout the day. I too just downloaded an app. this week called Ease into 5K. It's my hope to eventually move towards a 10K (they have an app. for that too). Good luck with your half marathon!

  3. It's definitely a love/hate thing. I love how I feel when I'm doing it and especially afterwards. I love body-weight exercises but I'm now starting to run and so my first goal is a 5K. I have to exercise...if I don't I end up with all sorts of unpleasant ailments.

  4. I don't enjoy it BUT I LOVE FOOD so it is a must. I don't run and never will! I walk inside and out, elliptical and group classes. I love swimming too and can't wait for the gyms outdoor pool to open!

    Good luck on your training.
Thanks for the app tip, I'm going to see if it works for walking too.

Love my smart phone! Love it!

  6. I love it, to be honest! Sometimes it's hard but I try my best to make my workouts enjoyable so that I'm not stuck on a treadmill or a long run for an hour because then I get bored. I use LYRFree (Log Your Run) for when I DO go on long runs, or bike rides which are also great for getting cardio without risking injuries or working your joints too hard. If you're looking for ways to make your workout more fun, here are a few cross-training workouts you could do ranging from 4 minute workouts to 45 minute workouts ... also, I just posted a 25 minute whole body workout that is also fun! There's a free download on that page for a 25 minute track that times out your intervals -- that is made for the workout but can be used for ANYTHING, so it will work for running, biking, etc!

  7. I'm like everyone else, I have a love-hate relationship with exercise. I walk 3 miles most days. I don't listen to music when I'm walking, I just like to be alone with my thoughts. I also lift weights. It makes me feel strong. And don't laugh but I enjoy step aerobics. I know I'm dating myself but if my knees aren't bothering me I drag out my board & put on one of my old DVD's. They were VHS tapes that I had converted to DVD's. That's how old they are!

  8. To your question; Love it, Hate it, Tolerate it? My answer is Yes, Yes, Yes!
Like most I LOVE the physical and mental benefits after I do "it".
I HATE dragging myself out of bed, and out the door to do "it".
I TOLERATE the love/hate relationship because of all the positivie benefits of "it".
That said...I am off to meet a friend for pilates class :)

  9. Great post, it's always more fun to workout with a buddy. Good luck in your half marathon training. I play two person beach volleyball 2-3 times a week with a group of women that I have either competed against or played with for the past 25 years. The workout is incredible, but just as inmportant is the camaraderie we have with each other. If I didn't play volleyball I would something else like tennis. Anytime you can incorporate "play" into a workout with friends, you are more likely to look forward to it and keep it up!

  10. I've been working towards a 5K the last month or so using the 5K runner app, which models the Couch 2 5K program. It's awesome and it's a slow pace, which I need. Good luck with your half!

  13. Good for you, Janell! I do lots of walking with our dog on a daily basis and then try to get to the gym at least 4 times a week. Some days I have to force myself! I always feel good afterwards and know I am taking care of my body. I applaud you for taking on the half marathon!

  14. Yep total love hate relationship with exercise! Congrats on training for a half marathon! My dad just started running 3 years ago and did his first marathon last year, he is doing another one this year. It is great to see him as an example of fitness, I am sure your kids feel the same way!

  16. I've exercised every day since Oct of 1989. I can't imaging it not being part of my life. I never think of it as love, like or hate. It is just something I do, like eating. It scares me to think what my life would be like if I hadn't made the commitment so long ago. I haven't always weighed what I want to, but that 60+ minutes a day are the best investment I have made in my life. Currently I am doing P90X2, but I've been through countless phases. Good luck with your 13 miles. Stay committed, you will be glad you did.

  22. Janell...I hate to say it but I have been teaching fitness classes for 30 years now. I do a little running from time to time and I might have to check out that app! I agree with you that my life is much more happier since I added fitness to it :)

  23. I actually really like to exercise, but I haven't for the past two years because I was pregnant (and lazy) and then too busy with a baby and working to exercise. I just found out I'm losing my job, and so excited that I'll have time to work out again. :) Weird, I know. Yay for walking half marathons. I've done two walk/run half marathons and love them!!
