How To Get A High End Look For Less - Table Lamps

I decided to repost this post from a ways back because I keep seeing the lamps show up on Pinterest, so someone must be interested! I loved this project and still adore the finished lamps, so here it is again and considering giving a similar project a try yourself!

Finding a great pair of new lamps for the Master Bedroom Redesign was a necessity, as I recently broke one that was in the room. I searched high and low, looking for a gourd lamp at a bargain basement price. The best option I found was the below lamp at Overstock.com. But at $125 each and reviews disclosing the shade has a red damask lining, not the look I'm going for, the cost of replacing the shades would have to be added to the total. I've gotten spoiled by HomeGoods and have come to believe a decent lamp can be had for $39.00!

So off to HomeGoods I went...and just look at what I found for the target price of $39.00 each! Kind of ugly, right? Cobalt blue is not a color to be included in the bedroom color palette. But the shape was right, so I decided they were worth the effort it would take to change their color to exactly what I wanted.

Back home, the socket and cord were taped and wrapped with plastic to protect them from getting covered with paint, while the black base was left exposed. I decided to streamline the look of the lamps and paint both the lamp body and base the same color and finish.

Next the lamps were sprayed with Rust-Oleum's White Primer. Two coats were applied to make certain the blue was completely covered.

The following day the lamps were sprayed with two coats of Rust-Oluem's Heirloom White.

Between the coats of primer and paint the surfaces were lightly sanded with 220 grit sandpaper, removing a few random little bubbles created by the spraying process. The lamps were also wiped down with a cotton rag between coats.

The last step was to spray the lamps with Rust-Oluem's Clear Protective Finish in Gloss.

Oh my...seriously. I love the result!!

The gloss finish (which still looks just like these photos) give the lamps a high end look.

And in the bedroom:

(Though a bit later I did cover the shades with a favorite fabric for a tutorial for HGTV.com, see here.)

So, next time you want a high end look on lamps for less...give this a try!

They are gorgeous! And this was so helpful for me! I have lamps I painted red...they are fab but just don't go with my house. These tips are perfect for them. I actually already bought the same white spray. But that gloss! They look so great.

Your table lamps turned out super gorgeous!

I love this post! I have a table lamp that I wasn't so crazy about (it was gifted) so I was looking for a good tutorial to repaint the base.

Thanks for this wonderful tutorial, Janell. I just saved the link for my future DIY project!

Have a good day!

I love these! Had saved the image from the original posting and recently attempted something similar. I used a different primer, then a Rustoleum color and Rustoleum clear gloss on top. Even after a few light coats, mine wasn't nearly as glossy as yours. Any guess as to why?

You are right- these give off the high end vibe! What a great find- and at Home Goods, nonetheless. Great job Janell!

Those are amazing! I just did the same thing-- although mine aren't as terrific as yours, I feel pretty great with how it turned out!

The Lunds, perhaps it was due to applying several light coats? I applied one thicker one, making sure to work around the lamp to avoid drips, but to get a saturated application to maximize gloss. That is my best guess. Janell

Great look - I painted some lamps for my family room the same way, but did not do the gloss. I may have to do that because yours look spectacular!

Wow - the glossy finish is amazing! You'd never guess the lamp bases were spray painted. I'm adding Rust-Oleum Clear Protective Finish to my list of "must buy" DIY supplies!

I never would have believed that you didn't buy those lamps the way they look now if I hadn't seen the orignal cobalt color. They look fabulous! I'm a huge Home Goods fan as well. I could spend hours in there.

Love seeing this post again! It was a great one!

That is the bummer about pinterest! When I see something pinned and I know who did it I try to comment the correct link and or individual that it originated from.

Love your work!

Looks wonderful! I have been struggling with a lamp makeover, crackling and the sort. I'm going to try again, sanding, wiping down with cotton cloth... AND the Heirloom White (my white was SO white) and the protective finish. Thanks for posting this. =)

A Lived in Home said...

How amazing! Heirloom White is one I always keep in my stock pile!

Glad you reposted. I don't' remember seeing this post but this could be applied to vases, and other objects as well. Glad to know this method!

Thanks for a great idea. I especially love the clear coat. For some reason, I have a hard time paying a lot of money for lamps and so I've been living with a not so great pair in my bedroom. I never considered finding cheaper ones and painting them.

I might have to follow suit once we get our new bed, I think I might need new lamps and mirrors in my room. Thanks for the How-To!! Kathysue

Can I ask how many coats of the clear gloss you put on? Was the white a flat or gloss finish? I am currently redoing a lamp and using the clear gloss, and after three coats it is still not shiny like that.

How have I not found your blog before??? I had the same problem and found some AWESOME shaped WORKING lamps at goodwill but they were the UGLIEST puke green. This is the perfect solution!
