Upscale, Repurpose & Reimage: My 2012 Decorating Plan

I have very little interest in spending a lot of money on my house this year, it's just where my head is at these days. But that doesn't mean I don't want to adjust a few things, adding a "fresh up" here and there. So my idea is to look at what I already have in place and see what simple adjustments can be made to add a new twist, while continuing to evolve our home into the vision I have for it.

Like adding a layer of Rub 'n Buff to my deer head?

I doubt this will actually be added to the calendar of projects, but this is the type of tweak I'm talking about.

And how about you, what is your approach to sprucing up the home this year?

  1. I agree that I don't want to put a ton of money into my home this year. Some of the projects that I want to be done might have to wait a year or so only because they could domino into some real bucks. Simplify...that seems to be my new word lately. I am trying to use what I have to create totally new looks. We will see how it goes.

  2. Janell, you have to check out my No Spend Challenge for the month of January! I am totally on the same page... what can I reuse, rethink, or repurpose in my house? I can still see a little more buying in the future {since we are moving into a new house} but still trying to keep it from craigslist or thrifting! {hugs}

  3. My approach is to just put down the Rub-n-Buf and walk away.

  4. I love your deer head. That room is one of my favorites in all of blogland! I plan to do a lot of the same this year except for a few big things that have to be done - like replacing exterior doors that have rotted - boo!

  5. "Rub 'n Buff Anonymous" Mary? That cracked me up. Yes, I think the stuff can be that addictive. :)

  7. I agree with you- I don't want to shell out huge bucks to revamp my whole home. But doing a few DIY projects will likely put me in a better mood and get me excited. Love the deer head!

  8. i feel like so many of us are in the same boat this year! im trying to furnish my first house, so theres not a whole lot i can do except buy (hopefully inexpensive and second hand when possible). i cant wait to see how you re-image your stuff!

OHH and that reminds me. I bought some Rub N Buff to redo a brass table I have and I cannot for the life of me figure out the trick to applying it. Did you do any posts that talk about how to APPLY it???

  9. Oh, Rub 'n Buff, put a TINY bead on your finger and lightly swipe it across the area you want to cover/highlight, and then rub it in. I'd suggest doing a test somewhere to get the hang of it before applying to THE piece. Also, some people swear by applying it which a brush, like a fine arts "fan" brush....to avoid ending up with gold fingers.

It really is super easy, just got to try and see what method works, whether you are trying to do an overall application or highlights.

    Good Luck! Janell

  10. Similar approach for me. I'm planning on low-cost/ high-impact changes this year. Unfortunately this combination usually takes a lot of work, but I'm ok with that. I'm a DIY kind of gal.

  11. I hear you completely. I think a little creativity (and paint!) can go a long way. I used similar gold paint on an old pottery barn side table which had a thick glass top.. it totally changed the look!

  12. Your decision is understandable Janell...your house is gorgeous as is. You can now relax and enjoy all of the hard work you have put into it these last few years!
Although, I also understand the need to freshen up rooms so I always go with the standards...new pillows, new lampshades, and lots of fresh flowers!

  13. Right now I'm of the mind of only buying what I need and not random things that catch my eye, Janell. So far I've been using what I've got and I'm happy with the outcomes. I do need a few small pieces to fill in the gaps, but I plan on checking out the thrift stores and painting whatever I find.

  14. *** Janell, you couldn't KNOW this, but YOUR "little jobs" are MY "BIG jobs"!!! ... I THINK of sooooo many SUPER things I COULD DO/CHANGE-UP, but get quite intimidated ~~~ I guess a gal's gotta learn SOMETIME tho, cuz I LOVE "this kind of instant gratification"!!! Maybe a "RUB N' BUFF" project would be a gooood "beginning" for me??? Waddayathink, Sweetie??? Thanks!!!

Hope you are all well n' happy!!!

  15. I'm so on board...after the giant kitchen reno last year, I'm in fiscal correction mode but still have an entire floor to decorate...I'm thinking painting is on the agenda this year- inexpensive and makes a huge difference.

  16. I am on that same page - revamping the "treasures" I already own while spending minimum $.

  17. Where did you get the deer head, Janell?? I've always admired it and purchased on through Restoration Hardware last month, but it is WAAAAYYYY smaller than yours. I love the scale of yours.

  18. I found mine at Z Gallerie about 5 years ago, was brown, painted it white. They then introduced a white one, a similar in stock now as well I believe.

It's a trend I keep waiting to see go out of style...but it seems to have staying power and I still love mine!

  21. I have the same approach to decorating my home this year. we are renting now, so I can't do anything to the actual house, so instead I'm focused on sprucing up my stuff and making it reflect my vision for our home.

  22. I realized during our recent move that I am a craft and diy hoarder. I get an idea, buy the stuff and then move on to something else. This year I'm trying to finish all the things I started:)

    ReplyDelete
  23. I agree! Trying to finish uncompleted projects this year. I want to finally say I am done .......

    ReplyDelete
  24. Right now, I am going to focus on getting the master bedroom in order. then lighting in the rest of the house.....

  25. I love this idea! I'm trying to slow my roll in our home this year as well - really try to work on small decorating/finishing things and take a break from the renovations - they are costly and exhausting!

  26. oh how i wish i liked decorating with deerheads...my husband hunts from october 1 thru january 31...i just redid a room just for him...and the stuffed heads had to be included. (we call it the d.a.r for dead animal room...ha! ha!) fortunately the september '11 issue of house beautiful had some awe-inspiring rooms with antlers filling up so pretty big spaces. on another note...i will be in portland from feb 24-28. if i could shop one home decor establishment in downtown portland what would it be?

  27. I am with you Janell! And love Rub n Buff - such an easy way to transform things around the home. My goal is to paint my wood ikea bookcases, get rid of their espresso stain! And to slipcover my Parson's chairs!

  28. I think we'll start with razing the place....

  29. Fully agree! This Dubai rental is only so big and won't be ours forever so I'm focusing on completing projects I have already bought supplies for that will go with us when we eventually move.

  30. Love it!!! I can't wait to try that rub n buff product!!
