An Organization Project That Has Had Staying Power!

Now, as you scroll down, don't you go calling me a hoarder.

Here's a repost of an organizing project I did a year ago...that amazingly has had staying power. Just take a look at the "after" photos, one from January 2011 and the second taken yesterday, at the end of this post.

This is a hall closet where all the games are stored, along with sewing, painting and wrapping supplies, small tools, scissors, tape, pens, cards and just about every other little item you find yourself needing on a daily basis. With a minimum of harassment from me, the rest of the family has cooperated and learned to RETURN an item to where it belongs after using: The key to any organizing project having lasting results I've discovered.

The disaster from a year ago...

Not too bad. I approached this project by getting two large boxes to fill with any items worth donating, garbage bags for anything that should have been tossed a while ago, wicker baskets for storage and a lot of Ziploc bags.

This pile of random items is what was in front of the bins, the actual content hidden away inside the bins were emptied and sorted through later! Where did that lamp shade come from? This closet is deep and I was amazed at the amount of stuff our family had managed to tuck away, back in its recesses, over the last couple of years.

The game shelf is what surprised me! How is it possible we have that many games?

They were sorted through, with the ones used frequently put back on the shelf and the others donated to Goodwill.

What a mess! Bags of seasonal decor, acrylic paint, ribbon, wrapping paper and lots and lots of odds and ends.

Sort, toss, clean, pack up and organize into piles of similar items.

Then I tackled the bins.

Organize, organize, organize.

Finally, the post-its used for identifying the bin contents while sorting were replaced with pretty labels, and this project was done.

Here's to it staying this way...for a while.

after (January 2012)

Well, what do you know, Yippee! With a few random additions, it has stayed organized!
You don't know how happy this has made me...

Impressive that you kept it that way. I remember when you posted it last year...totally inspired me to start cleaning out every closet. It's still amazing a year later.

The best organizing is the kind that really fits in with your life so it can stick - great job!

I have a spare bedroom that needs organizing. It's where I keep my supplies for my projects. Problem is, I collect projects like some old women collect cats.
When I finish projects the room looks pretty good. I can even leave the door open.
But then I start on something and it goes back to the way it was.

How i wish my closets looked that way. I've been cleaning and organizing for the past three days and only just finished my garage and craft studio. I still have three closets to sort through. It never ends. Hopefully i do a good enough job that it sticks too.

Looks great! I beg you feel even better. Organizing is so rewarding. I'll have to bookmark this for my husband. He doesn't realize that everyone has their hotspots that can get messy! Here's to me being more organized in '12!

I am impressed and very inspired. BIG goal for me this year is to get rid of a lot of the excess all the clutter, that I seem to get attached to (think old great mags, tons of design stuff, etc.....) I am in the process of packing, a little every day and it feels so great and liberatig to fill those great big black garbage bags to the brim and say goodbye! Nothing like opening a closet that is totally organized or drawers.....best feeling ever!

I bet this helped you do even more projects over the past year. If my closets were that pretty and organized, I'd totally be looking for an excuse to go to them!

That's how you know it worked, Janell! It obviously functions well the way you set it up that it continues to look so neat and organized. I know how easy it is to just toss something in a closet "for now" and it gets lost in there forever! I need to go through some of ours because that was what I did after we moved, until I could decide on some things.

Doesn't it feel so good to have organization? And it looks so good too.

It looks fantastic. Doesn't it feel so 'free-ing' to be organized? That chandelier is so fun, where did you get that?

Did you do the light? Is there a link? So like me to not being attention to what I'm supposed to be paying attention to, but that light is GORGEOUS!!

Janell @ Isabella and Max said...

Dani, funny, but when I posted this last year everyone had the same question! It is the Comet fixture, found at Horchow. I had gotten it for another project that didn't come through, so I figured I could hang it here. It's a bit out there, but super fun! Janell

Such a major success when it stays organized. That means it's really working well. Nice work!

It still looks fantastic and way better than mine. :) Way to go!!

I guess this just confirms that there is efficacy in getting organized. It's so darn easy now that just throwing it in the closet doesn't even make sense:)

I LOVE the light fixture! Where did it come from???

Oh wow...I'm so jealous. My resolution for 2012 is more organization and you have certainly inspired me...amazing!!

Fabulous! You organized it in a way that works for all of you and you also got everyone on board with keeping it that way. Great work, Janell! Monopoly and Candy Land...two of my favorites growing up. I still enjoy a good game of Monopoly.

Lisa @ Shine Your Light said...

So funny, I was going to ask about the light but I see it's been asked! Love it, and have total closet envy right now!

Janell @ Isabella and Max said...

Yes, I found the "Comet" light fixture during a sale at Horchow a couple years ago. Just looked and no longer there, but did find it at Shades of Light:

It's listed about about twice the price I paid, but I'm certain it can be found for less somewhere!

It looks like a sizable closet and it is a wonderful thing when the organization bug hits all and everyone pitches in to put things back in their proper place. Very impressive!

Hi--I just found your blog today. The closet looks great and I like the way you have labeled everything thing. I used these shoe box storage boxes in my closet at and it has saved me tons of time (not looking for things) as well as space. Could you please share where you purchased the hall pendant near the closet? I really like it. Thank you.
