Decorating Smarts: Using What You Have

Do you think you need to wait until you have a decent budget to start in on a room? If you look around your house, in the garage and perhaps in the basement, making use of what is already on hand you might just be surprised with the progress that can be made by using what you have. Case in point: Lakeitha's "new" living room!

As Lakeitha wrote: "Last night while I was painting the last cabinet in my kitchen, I got the urge to pull together my living room on the fly using what I have."

"For the past year, my living room had been bare. Ok, who am I kidding, it has been my catch all room when I’m working on projects! So last night when I saw one of the boys riding the back of my sofa like a horse, I decided right then that I had to make better use out of my living room and I started by moving the sofa in there. After pulling pieces from different rooms and from my garage, I ended up with this:"

"I still have A LOT to do to say that this room is “finished”. I need to add some pictures and art to the walls. I need more pillows and I know exactly which ones I want! With the holidays knocking at the door, I had to do something fast. Next is the dining room and then I’m going to finish the kitchen which is really really close to being done. Using what you have is a great way to decorate when you’re in a hurry and on a limited budget (and believe me, my budget is teeny weeny!)…. So, what do you think?"

I think you rocked it! When I saw the first "after" picture, for a moment I thought it was an inspiration image. Great job, enjoy!

Oh WOW!!! THanks for sharing my living room makeover! The best part about not spending anything to pull this together is that I didn't have to listen to my husband complain about how much things cost! We already had everything:)

Thanks again girl!

This is brilliant! I love what she did and I love that you don't have to feel guilty moving things around when you didn't go out and buy a bunch of stuff to start with. I did something similar with our living room about a year ago.

Wow, Lakeitha did a great job on her living room! What makes it even more of a "wow" is that she just did it on the spur of the moment. It's amazing how a deadline like a holiday or guests coming to visit can light a fire under us!

I saw her living room post last night and loved it! I honestly think rooms come together so much better when they're done on the fly and it just happens instead of over thinking them! Her living room is seriously beautiful!!

Beautiful room! No matter what the budget - it's so smart to "shop our house" - like looking at things from another perspective!

The living room looks great! Love the blue dresser, the rug, the birdcage and the table lamps. I love how she shops from her own home and from the garage, very smart of her! I wish my garage has that many beautiful pieces! :)

Have a lovely day, Janell!

She did a great job....Love it and a good reminder to shop at home before heading to the store!

Lakeitha--this is inspiring! I totally support shopping at home; that's why it matters so much that we buy what we love in the first place and then we have all these possibilities, over time. That dresser's color, a whole lotta soul in that beauty. Love the lines in the room -- now this will discourage your boys from climbing on the sofa! well, maybe, a mother of three here, grandmother of four. reality says, prolly not but I can see the mood in this new room enticing a little guy onto the sofa with a book, sitting by his mama.

I want to go shop her garage! Unbelievable what she did to pull that room together with what she had. I don't think she needs to do another thing to it, it looks fantastic! So inspiring.

She totally ROCKED it! What a great addition to her home out of things she already had!

I am loving your concept of decorating slow. My husband and I ripped out some walls and redid all the floors and the kitchen in the main level of our house last winter - finished in early Feb - and I am JUST getting to the decorating. I've had several failed attempts at smaller project hoping for direction but I am just now figuring out what I really want. Some how the concept of slow decorating makes me feel less decor impaired and smart for taking the time to make the right decisions. Thanks for that :)

Great post Janell! I thought that fisrt picture was an inspiration photo as well. Lakeitha did an AMAZING job using what she already owned to revamp her space. The room looks so cozy now. You'd never know that space wasn't furnished the day before. Beautiful room!

I was truly blown away. I had to scroll back and forth just see-- if what I read was right?

Do you have source details for that sofa? I've been looking for a 2 cushion with those straight arms.

Janell @ Isabella and Max said...

I just wrote Lakeitha to ask her for the resource...she replied, "Macys!"

Hope this helps, Janell

Hi Amber!

My sofa is from Macy's and was part of their Tyler collection. It has since been discontinued, but I did manage to find a similar collection on their site. Here is the link
