Winning the Battle With My Paper Piles

When I talked to Pauline about writing this article for House of Fifty, I was also looking for personal advice!

Yes, my piles had gotten out of control.

But with all the newly acquired filing space brought into the bonus room through these cabinets,
I was ready to tackle the disaster.

What a laborious job, thankfully it was a team effort...

...with rewards! I discovered a lost gift card to JCrew. Good grief, this job even paid!

And after a couple sessions...

...everything had been sorted, labeled and filed. Who knew a filing job could be so satisfying!
A couple drawers for the household, one each for Isabella & Max, a few for business and even a spare!

And the bonus?

Newly freed up space that can house design supplies,
items that are currently making the master walk-in closet nearly inaccessible.

Oh, organizational happiness.

I love to organize. Is that weird?! Again, love those filing cabinets!

What a thrill to see the empty closet! I am serious; it was really exhilarating! And yes, I am using words usually reserved for roller coasters. That's how I feel. ;) Have a great week, Janell!

I love organizing and I love when it gives you new found space. I have to go through my paper piles again...soon. You have inspired me to make that happen sooner than later. Love seeing the empty closet.

Oh my, I definitely need to do this too! Adding this to my long to do list...

ok, finding lost gift cards definitely makes it worthwhile! your messy closet is what my desk is looking like in my studio - except it's not my paperwork, it's my guy's stuff. I'm waiting impatiently for him to get his off-site office so I can reclaim my space!

I'll be doing this myself, Janell, as we are just now setting up our home office. Trying to decide if we need an actual cabinet or if the portable filing pieces I have will work. After moving {and having to shred years and years of papers} I am determined to only hold onto that paperwork that I really need to.

Oh how I can relate!!!!!! I have papers everywhere, somehow there IS a method to my madness but its a littel of control on this end too. BEST feeling is getting it all under control and organizing, throwing away ( while you wonder what the heck you were keeping all that junk for anyway) I do plan on doing some heavy duty organizing when we move, am actually starting in very small doses now. Good post and I know that feeling well about how wonderful it feels for everything to have a place!

An organized space is completely underrated. It saves so much time to have everything organized, doesn't it?

Oh Boy! Do we need to do this in our office. Maybe I can bribe my hubs to get involved & help me.

I am a paper piler from way back. I found that I would even just jam everything into one file in the cabinet. My husband likes file cabinets, but I found that I like my new system of binders. Getting used to a system that works for you makes all the difference in the world.

Paper is the bane of my existence! It's almost end of year, and I have to go through it all and make sure it's all on Quick Books....hate this part of my job!! Congrats on a clean and organized space and a gift card to boot!!

Seeing how organized you are makes me want to help my husband organize his messy paper work, too!

You did a great job, Janell and congrats on the gift card!

Isn't it so therapeutic when everything is in it's place and accessible and labelled? Particularly paperwork. Wonderful!

Nicely done. I would have gotten sidetracked by the gift card and gone shopping.

I love a good paper purge. It feels so great when you're all done and 'cleansed' =)

Paper clutter is the worst! I always feel so good after getting it all organized or better yet, tossing what I don't need. I find that after I've filed things away, maybe a year later if I've never needed it again, I can toss it without regret. p.s. isn't it great to find "lost" money or gift certificates?!

Very voyeuristic of me but I LOVE it when people show real life 'befores' of messy spaces! Especially super stylish people! I hate paper piles. I have them and I hate them. I am always looking for ways of stopping paper from coming in the house. I just had one good purge and another purge is needed. Your lovely clear cupboard is just the motivation I need!

This has been on my list of things to do for so long now. I need to just force myself to sit down and go through all my piles, thanks for the motivation! Hopefully I will find a JCrew card in my piles too, fingers crossed.

Organizing just feels so good! I finally got a paper shredder and have been sorting my files too! Thanks for the motivation to keep going!

Oh happy day! So satisfying to get all of that organized. Makes me giddy! And amazing to free up that closet space. Nice that you can reward yourself with a little number from J Crew.

Great job!! You've made me rethink filing cabinets in a positive way. :)

Thanks Emily, and EVENTUALLY the tops of these cabinets will be covered with a "countertop" creating a nicely finished look. Ikea is currently out of the butcher block I had my eye on, so looking at other options while I wait! :)

Oh, for me it's the getting started...feeling inspired now!!

Ha, yes! I only looked at this pile as it grew for a year before I couldn't take it any longer! (And a few frustrating occasions when I couldn't find a needed piece of paper!) Janell

Oh dear! I need a someone to organize me. This does not come natural. Your office looks great. The trick is to keep it up!

When I saw your first shot of the paper closet, I admit, it made me feel better to know that I am in good company. It's easy to forget in Blogland that not every space is perfect!

Congrats on a job well done,a little reward to indulge and extra space to boot!
