An Itsy Bitsy Tiny Bit Of Progress

Okay, I wasn't wild about how these finishes looked on the table...the clear solution of Briwax turned the wood yellow and once I moved the table into the room I saw the Tudor Brown was going to be too dark, against the rich brown walls.

So I ordered a can of Briwax Liming Wax. I've never used it, but I liked the idea!

I had been advised to test a spot of wood on the underside of the table, and I thought I would...but how do you stop once you get started?!

LOVE what I'm seeing, the white fresh subtle finish which brings out the gray tones of the wood.

Time to find a moment to finish the job!

Is this product something you wipe on & then leave. Or do you wipe it off after it sits for a few minutes? Love the grayish tones.

I'm back from vacation. Now I need to catch up on your older posts.
Between loads of laundry of course.

Delurking...Waaa! that looks like the color of my table (left side) and the finish I was looking for (right side)!

We had our cherry wood dining table done professionally but I couldn't get across what I wanted to achieve.. Now I'm left with a pine-ish colored table and I'm so not in love.
Only problem is I'm in Europe and I guess Briwax Liming wax is not in our shops.

Really love how you go into detail in all of your projects... and it's like reading a novel! chapter one, chapter two, can't wait to see what happens in the next chapter :)

oooh I just love that finish. I have been trying for ages to get that finish and have been trying a white wash. The liming wax nails it! Thanks for showing us what it can do. LOVE IT! I have a side table that I may have to try it out on. Also as a side note, do you know of any great sources for cool eclectic rugs? Thanks in advance:)

It's really pretty, a very soothing color. (I seriously don't know how you find the time to get everything done, do you sleep!!)

Love the liming. I think oak [looks like oak] is one of the best woods for the liming wax.

Ha, I do sleep, love my sleep, though I do get up quite early to catch up on things before the kids wake up!

Rugs, if I know an exact rug I'm looking for I search for it on eBay, other good sources: Rugsusa.com, shadesoflight.com, occasionally I see a great style at Ikea, and I'm personally waiting to see if Nate Berkus runs his chevron rug again on HSN! For higher end rugs, Horchow runs decent sales here and there (one just ended) and if you live in the NW, NWRugs is a great store to stop by.

I have to ask...is this a solid wood table? What type of wood is it? We just purchased an unfinished solid maple kitchen table. We can't decide what to do with it. My hubby wants to use just a few coats of clear poly. I'm worried it will come out yellow. He just did that same thing to our sons high chair. Not my favorite finish but I don't think it is the same wood. Anyway...sorry to be long winded. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jen

Hi Jen,
This table is oak. From Sherry Hart's comment above, I think this finish would work best on a wood that has a lot of grain and color variation, which maple does not have. It may however work, I'd consider testing the product to see. Janell

Nice finish. I need a new finish on my breakfast table and intend to gray it down. This might be just the thing!

I paint furniture, but have never used wax. I always think of chippy or distressed furniture when I think of wax, and I do the clean, modern look, so I have always used poly. Any guidance on using one over the other? I'm getting ready to restain a mid-century modern dresser, and I'm wondering if wax would be better than poly for the topcoat.

So funny...I just finished writing a post about limed wood (not published yet). It is so beautiful and timeless. Love the easy this table looks!

I love the look of the liming wax! We've been debating what to do with our new unfinished dining table (stain? oil? paint?), but I think this could be our answer. Thanks!
