A Street Of Dreams - Portland Style

The annual Street of Dreams home show in Portland is an event I always look forward to with anticipation! What fun to stroll through homes, seeing a wide range of architectural features, finishes and decorating ideas! It's my Nirvana.

While home shows have struggled to stay viable within a turbulent housing market, the local response this year was to showcase a collection of smaller homes with more realistic prices, all in the $800,000 to 900,000 range.  And though these homes still aren't affordable to the average home buyer, they are certainly closer than the homes in the past with price tags in the millions.

HOUSE ONE

Frank Lloyd Wright inspired architecture was the highlight of this home, and it is a style that looks very much at home in the NW with it's emphasis on materials of wood and stone.

Each home featured covered outdoor spaces with fireplaces...a dream for our own backyard. With rainy weather much of the year, covered outdoor areas make it possible to enjoy being outside beyond the summer months.

The highlight of this house was the built in closet with quality cabinetry and substantial shelving...

...the flooring and bar stools...

...and the masculine elements in the banister, entertainment wall and carpet.

With the new economy there was considerably less emphasis on decorating the homes to the level seen in
previous years, which was disappointing. But I loved this felt flower poof {DIY project anyone?} and stainless steel dresser!

HOUSE TWO

I always find myself drawn to Tudor style exteriors.

And while my family tends to dash out of view whenever I pull out the camera these days, on this evening they strangely made no effort. So please, no complaints about being on my blog today....

This home had the best outdoor space, well dressed with a peeks of the view beyond.

There was a nursery with high ceilings and unusual architectural details, which were sadly not taken advantage of in its decor. A Juliette balcony was the focal point in a girls room, with stunning views from the master.

This was the best decor idea I saw in the entire show. A lattice cutout creating a whimsical and striking backdrop behind the bed in another girl's bedroom.

The tile and the wood flooring in a similar tone were fantastic!

Technology was the star of this home, creating a "smart house", with all its functions able to be controlled from an iPad! It would be interesting to see how this would change how you lived in the home.

As we were leaving through the garage I was puzzled to see this really fun piece of furniture sitting forgotten in a corner. Surely a place could have been found for it somewhere within the home!

HOUSE THREE

Home number three was the least impressive or interesting from the exterior, but it had the best kitchen of all the homes.

Right up my {design} alley, I loved the modern touch brought in by the zebra wood island.

A back hallway and stairwell featured a built in seat and a set of message boards. Another great DIY project.   Anyone up for creating two side by side boards, one magnetic and the other chalk? This hall lead to the second outstanding room in this home, a flex space with floor to ceiling windows and access to the backyard.

If this were my home I'd be claiming it as my home office!

HOUSE FOUR

This home was the Paula Deen home, featuring her new line of home furnishing.

And look, she was on site to welcome us!

While a little overdone for my personal taste, it had a very warm and homey feel, with very well appointed interior and exterior kitchens. Well, it is Paula's home after all!

The built-in cabinetry in the dining room...

...bathroom...

...and nook in the master entrance, as well as the mudroom, was the outstanding feature in house number four.

HOUSE FIVE

I somehow missed snapping an exterior shot of house five, but I was very excited by its potential upon seeing its gorgeous dining room and how beautifully it was decorated and furnished!

The outdoors had a fun and somewhat strange exercise area that I could barely pull the "kids" away from...

...which gave me time to spot a SOLD sign on the plants in the backyard. Odd to see the plants have sold while the house hasn't, I wonder why.

The answer to that question was provided upon entering the kitchen. I'm speechless.

{Rather, I became speechless when my husband suggested I be less vocal with my opinion while touring the space.}

This finish. Why?

I wasn't the only one looking for an answer.

The "why" only grew as I saw the cabinetry finish continued through the media room, family room, laundry room, and all the bathrooms.

But regardless of this strange conclusion to the show, what a fun way to spend an evening!!

Hi Janelle-

I loved the outdoor areas with the stacked stone fireplace and columns- just dreamy. Fun tour - looks like you had a fun time.

The finish on those cabinets has me perplexed. The kitchen looks like it is on a video game. Very odd. The outdoor spaces at the homes are unbelievable. Thanks for the tour!

Touring homes is my favorite thing to do. Getting to go with you and not having to deal with the crowds & the lines made this tour fun.
I am curious about the lattice work in the girl's bedroom. I wonder how that was done. I'm thinking it involved a laser.
And the last kitchen! The builder paid for that? Really?
Just because you have money doesn't mean you have taste.

Janet said...

The cabinets in house five are just bizarre. At first glance it appeared as if it was a trompe l'oeil rendition of panels painted on the doors... WTF?? A new paint job could sell that house!

Mary Hook said...

I always love home tours! Thank you for sharing! I am speechless about the last house's cabinetry, too! It looks like it was airbrushed!

i normally don't comment, but at first i thought that last kitchen was a sketch!! That is the weirdest thing I've ever seen.

Thank you for the tour! The first thing that popped in my mind when seeing that last kitchen: Disney World's Haunted Mansion! That finish is so dramatic it would fit right into the decor. Add a few spider webs and a creepy butler - and presto, you have a haunted kitchen!

Katie said...

That last kitchen....wow. Speechless is right. Thanks for the tours....I only wish I could have seen them in person. How fun.

As for the DIY pouf....JandJHome posted the same things last week! Here's the tutorial.

That cabinet treatment is very odd. Sometimes I wonder what people are thinking??

Janell @ Isabella and Max said...

Yes, but if they give me a call I know how to redo kitchens with paint and a great crew! With the floors and beautiful counters, it could be looking fab in no time! Janell

I'm loving these homes...especially that stainless steel dresser. Thanks for posting. I'm with you on the cabinetry in that kitchen. At first the photo looked like a rendering. It's almost cartoon-y and to choose it for more than 1 room? Yuck/

I love reading your blog! I live in New Orleans- so after a cup of coffee and a little news update- I log onto your blog @7:30 CST and revel in the humor, ideas, and perspective! This one was so much fun! I love home tours and your commentary had me laughing throughout! Thank You!

I, too, live in NOLA (part time) and our home is in Portland....My daughter and I go to the Portland Street of Dreams every year on her birthday. Thanks for the post, I am SO looking forward to the show and the weather in Portland!

What a nice tour. Home tours are becoming less "over the top" in recent years and appropriately so. I love that bathroom with the patterned floor...fabulous!

I want house 3 but the outside style of house 2. All of them are really beautiful, although the cabinets in the last house are a little um... different lol. -Happy Monday!

Wonderful way to spend an afternoon - I'm sure you came home with fresh ideas!
I think I've seen lattice like that available in the new Ballard designs catalog... certainly looks great, used here.
To me, that last kitchen takes on almost a cartoon-like quality, as if someone has tried to make it look 3D on a 2D page.

Jean said...

Thanks for the home tour! On eof may favorite things to do is visit other homes for design inspiration. I must say though, those kitched cabinets are BAD. It took away from the entire house!

Courtney {a thoughtful place} said...

That finish almost looks cartoon-esque in the photos. I am in love with the room you would claim as your office. It's beautiful. Always so fun to walk through homes like that {last dining room reminded me of yours}.

Sherri Cassara said...

I LOVE house tours and how fun that you took me along with you ;)
I want house #2 - the interior is beautifully done and that outdoor space - wow! And I like the dining room in house 5. I love that your family will go along with you on these tours - my kids at that age would have said, "no thanks!".

erlfisher said...

The closet in house 1, the Tudor style of house 2, the laser cut headboard, those tiles on the powder room floor, the message boards in house 3 and that beautiful flex space. So much to love!
We have the same tile featured in the house 4 bathroom - so fun to see how someone else used it and how it was paired with the other elements.
And house 5? That is insane! Maybe a wealthy tattoo artist will find it stunning.
Thanks for the tour!

Melodie said...

I certainly was drawn to the exterior of the second home, just lovely!

I laughed right out loud at the cabinetry in the last home. What on earth were they thinking?! It looks ridiculous!

Janell, What a fun way to spend Monday morning. Touring houses with my cup of coffee and in the comfort of my own home!!Loved the last dining room, I gasped at the last kitchen, it looked like a caricature of a faux finished/glazed cabinet job. that was so sad, it was hard to look at anything else. I can not imagine that you did not gasp either, good thing we weren't together it might have sounded like a duet!! Happy Monday sweet friend,Kathysue

House 3 - LOVE the dining chairs with the flowers. Gorgeous.

Finihs on the cabinets - um, did you suddenly walk in to cartoon land? It looks like a Disney house where everything is exaggerated and airbrushed. Weird.

Stella said...

Beautiful homes. House number 5's kitchen looks like Minnie Mouses house at Disneyland...WHY ?

Paula Deen's furnishing are beautiful. I'm loving the dining room.

Thanks for the tour! I remember this from my Oregon days! You are right about that last kitchen. What were they thinking? Really bad! I wasn't a fan of the Paula Deen kitchen either. Thought the granite was too much. Loved all the outdoor spaces though.

I just went there yesterday. Definitely not as good as previous years' Street of Dreams, but still gave inspirational ideas. And, wow- none of these even topped 1 mil!

The cabinet look had us all confused. I don't mind when it is the beige with an antiqued finish, but the dark I don't like. Love the hidden room in house 2!

Cheers,

LOVE the lighting in Paula's dining, would love to know the source for that.

The finsh of the cabinetry on the last house reminds me of a skeleton costume, or that guy/model who got the his entire body tattooed skeleton.

I can admire someone for going for it, but it's just not for me.

Heather said...

Wow! Those houses are really nice (with the exception of that kitchen, although I loved the dining room). They would be at least 2.5 million where I live! OK, I know we're not supposed to compare, BUT...it does make me wonder!

Kimberly Moore said...

Ohhhh Street of Dreams! They did this every year in the greater Seattle area {where I'm from}. It was the highlight of my summer every year. There always seemed to be that one house that was just like, "really? REALLY?" I don't see that finish catching on anytime soon! Thanks for sharing. :)

Judy said...

I thoroughly enjoyed those home tours. Love the lattice idea in the girl's bedroom. That sounds like my kind of fun. Wish we had something like that here.

Gorgeous homes! I love the outdoor spaces with fireplaces and sitting areas. Although, I would keep the flat screen TV inside and enjoy the outdoors as you should. :)

I remember going to the Street of Dreams with my Aunt who lives in Portland, at least 15 years ago, yikes! That kitchen is hein.

Christy from fountains of home said...

Wow! I can't get over that last cabinetry! It almost feels as if its cartoonish. I wouldn't want to live with it for sure! The other homes were swoon worthy though, wouldn't complain if my house looked like that!

Jenny said...

Thanks for sharing Jannell - I love home tours no matter what the means. That last house though - oh my goodness. Reminds of those airbrushed t-shirts that you see at carnivals or something. I don't think I've seen anything like it!

Annie said...

Thanks for the beautiful homes! That last kitchen is UGLY! It looks like it has been rubbed down with soot!

Carol@TheDesignPages said...

These gorgeous homes are only enhancing my mad love for Portland. What a fun day for the family!

Hartwood Roses said...

I love the restful feeling of House #3, and the mudroom bench in House #4. The kitchen cabinets in House #5 look like something out of a cartoon. Can you imagine how much it cost to build a kitchen that looks that weird?

SHERRY HART said...

That finish on the last kitchen cabinets looked like "trump l oeil"...I thought it was fake at first! How weird. And then to do it in every room....They used to have the Street of Dreams here in Atlanta back in the 90's when times were good...not too many model homes anymore :(

Janell @ Isabella and Max said...

Yes, and the work of Jean Dubuffet came to mind for me. It didn't help the kitchen any that I photographed it with a man in a black and white skirt and red baseball cap, only highlights the sense of a "cartoonish" appearance.

I really thought Portland had better taste

lisaroyhandbags said...

Thanks for the tour - I love to see what model homes are looking like these days.
But, that kitchen in house 5 was hideous!! And while it may have cost a fortune, it looked so cheap and tacky.
Love the interior of house 3 and the outdoor space on house 2 :)

I actually gasped out loud when I saw the lattice. My son came running over to ask if I'd found something beautiful. Yes I did, Honey!

Some really fun inspiration ideas-the felt pouf was one of my favorites.

Whooooooooa -- weirdest kitchen cabinet finish EVER! That is so strange! ANd, as a painter, it drives me nuts that the columns weren't finished along with the rest of the cabinets..I mean...if you're gonna start the job, finish it! so bad...

Shelly said...

Thanks for sharing these beautiful images (well, all except the cabinets in the last home--what a shame). I'm from Seattle and miss the pacific northwests' Street of Dreams tours and all the wonderful design ideas and inspiration they provided.

Stephanie said...

There hasn't been a Street of Dreams here in San Diego in forever! This was a fun tour to see from another city. Totally Portland style.

Of course the kitchen cabinet finish was and is hidious. I would of had the same reaction as you did! It was as if I was looking at a cartoon, yeah what were they thinking?

I am not a fan of the interlocking circle tiles with the wood floor. The two don't really flow, and the threashold that they used really made the transition of the two floors obvious. Thanks for taking the time to take the pictures and share them with us!

Michaela said...

Wow! What stunning homes. That lattice idea is seriously so genius. Love it, Janell, thanks for sharing!

Marianne {Style For Living} said...

Yikes, the cabinetry in the last house is horrific! It would all have to be painted out STAT! I have never seen anything like it before and never want to see it again!

Genny said...

Why is correct ... those cabinets in the last house remind me of a Tim Burton film ... yikes!

those are some WEIRD cabinets....almost like they didnt finish painting them...other than that the first 3 homes are awesome.

Thank you so much for this tour Janell! I loved going to this when we lived in Portland so thanks for the virtual tour this year! I loved the dressing room and the finish on the kitchen island in the first house, and the exterior on the second, so I got some great ideas - thanks!!!

hi. found you through jones design co. We live in the vancouver, wa area and street of dreams is one of my favorite things to do. Unfortunately, I haven't dragged my husband there in a few years. Thanks for the tour!!! I'm completely perplexed over that last kitchen too. How sad. Now I'm dreaming of outdoor entertaining areas! :)

queenbeemama said...

We toured the Street of Dreams this year as well. I loved the outdoor rooms in all the houses. I want one! I agree with you on the finish of the cabinets in the kitchen. Didn't make any sense to me and why continue it thru the house? Loved the look of the kitchen in House two. Fun to read other peoples review of the Street Of Dreams

Adding the finishing touch said...

You're right, that is the oddest finish for a kitchen and why would they use it throughout the whole house. Aside from that random kitchen, the rest of the homes are stunning! I love the island in the first house!

Dianne Grover said...

These homes are really fantastic! The exterior and interior designs are all great except maybe for the cabinetry finishes of the fifth house. I do love the outdoor space of the second house, the kitchen and sun room of the third and the dining room of the fifth. These home ideas will certainly inspire other homeowners and flooring Honolulu experts as well. Thank you for this amazing post.
