Painting: Check!

Inspired by wallpaper...

...and some Ikea Chocolate...
(3 for $2.49 I tell you!)

...the bonus room painting is done, a deep rich brown.

While light paint colors are all the rage at the moment, for some reason dark just speaks to me in my own home. I think it helps remove the "builder grade" aspect from the home and highlight the trim in the rooms.

I did end up bringing the white floor lamp home from Ikea.
(Actually went back for another and they were all sold out! Oh well...)

It looks great paired with the chair, ottoman and media console we picked out several years ago for our first house. The throw was another item from Ikea, which I bought back when I was working on Max's room. The color didn't quite work in that project, but I'm thinking it is a great start for some color inspiration in this room.

Then I remembered these prints ordered last year. More yellow!
I'm back to Ikea to find frames.

And...I need to think positive as I start on the next little project for this room, installing shelving above the filing cabinets.

I had some lengths of MDF, intended for shelving with one finished rounded edge, cut to size at Home Depot.

Along with the help of some other supplies, I'm hoping to get them hung without too much trouble!

  1. Janell... the walls look fabulous! I will always love chocolate (not just in the form of edible bars)! Good luck with the shelf project :)

  2. That's good that you are listening when your house speaks to you. Living in your home before you start re-doing everything allows for that. In the end you have a design that sings!

I have to ask...does your husband ever get involved in your projects? Does he help you with painting, putting up shelves, installing light fixtures?

  4. Janell love the pop of acid yellow, It is just the right amount of POP for your color scheme. It makes me smile!! You are so amazing to me. I can not imagine hanging shelves or using a drill. I really need to become more handy. One of the downfalls of having a handy hubby. I just let him do it all. I will have to admit I am a bit of a klutz, okay I am a huge klutz! I even scare myself sometimes with the things I wind up doing. can't wait to see it all done. You are a dynamo!! xo kathysue

  7. Mary, my husband has many talents, but they do not include getting near tools, paint brushes or any type of DIY project...WITH the exception of helping me move furniture. :) The benefit, less interfering with my ideas, generally. Janell

  12. It looks great! If you're adding accents of yellow, maybe you should frame the yellow wallpaper swatch as well!

  13. I was anxious to see what accent color you would use. So fun. The little peek of the wallpaper in the bottom corner makes me giddy. I am taking notes as I sit here at my desk in a bonus room that needs love!

  15. we are definitely leaning towards darker colors for our next house -- all the light colors are not really our thing. I am really liking the wall color you picked

  18. that is a great brown - it seems to have more cool undertones (which I am attracted to lately) do you mind me asking what the name of the color is?

the lamp looks great, and your right, the white does POP :o)

  19. You are on a roll. I haven't even painted my office yet, since the wallpaper isn't being installed until next week. Can't have my office torn apart for too many days or I wouldn't get anyting done! Adore the dark walls, so cozy and warm. Love how this room is coming together!

  25. I totally agree that light colours in new homes can often look like the homeowner didn't paint at all after moving in. I applaud you for fighting the trends and being a trend setter instead.

  26. Janell - I was just wishing today that I could get to Ikea to get 4 picture frames!! Unfortuneately it is about 2.5 hours away from me so kinda hard with two kiddos and husband away on a military exercise!! When I lived near the Ikea in Ottawa Canada I would pop in all the time. And I feel for you about missing out on the second lamp - that would be my luck too! The brown colour is fab and so cozy!!! How many coats did it take to cover?

  27. I probably could have gotten away with one, but I had enough paint so did the second coat, which did result in a slightly richer color. One my way to Ikea to find frames tomorrow, lucky for me the kids like their pizza, so a nice little bribe! :)

  28. It's looking great! We had bedroom walls in that yummy chocolate shade and they were so cozy! And IKEA chocolate is SO delicious! Love your prints and the yellow will be a nice accent. Your wallpaper looks lovely with your blog header :)

  29. I see you have all basis covered at IKEA. Did you have Swedish Meatballs for lunch? They are quite good. One year, when my stepsister worked at IKEA Burbank, she had the IKEA chef help make our Smorgasborg for Christmas Eve. Of course my mom's are amazing. She gets her meat freshly ground at the butcher. Now she cures her own ham in the garage. Luckily it's very cold there in winter. The good news here is that I got the new IKEA catalog in the mail. :)

  32. LOVE the chocolate brown! I just painted a room that same color in my own home. It makes my house feel like a home and not a rental unit.
