High + Low Design

Introducing a statement wallpaper makes this room, so the splurge was completely worth it. However, as I pretty much blew the budget for redesigning our bonus room with the wallpaper and its installation, the remainder of the room will be completed by using what is already on hand, refinishing pieces and finding the remaining items at Ikea. A true room of HIGH + LOW!

This room will remain a multi-purpose space: work area during the day and a spot for play, movies and sleepovers during weekends and evenings! Therefore, a lot more storage is needed.

The long wall behind the sofa is calling out for a large bookcase and I found several options at Ikea.

The Expedit. Who hasn't seen this shown on endless blogs used with success in virtually every type of room?

I also liked the looks of the Besta Vassbo, with its glass doors.

But I like the size, price and size of the Expedit in its largest version. With the open back it won't look too visually heavy against the walls with the brown paint showing through.

Ikea also sells some really great storage options with these boxes and drawer insets, perfect for games, toys, and whatever else finds its way into the room.

Unfortunately the unit was out of stock on my last visit to the store, but I'm sure to return soon.

  3. How great is IKEA? I love the Expedit. I have a smaller one that I use as a sofa table in our downstairs family room. Awesome for storage and display.

  4. I always think that rooms that mix high and low end show more creativity than just everything being high end (that's what I tell myself, anyway!!).

I love seeing your room makeovers, Janell. You're a genius!!

  5. we have an Expedit in our kids playroom, looks much better than cheap bookshelf, so strong, sturdy, practical box sizes, just love it. Highly recommend it. We bought ours secondhand on Ebay! (cheaper...)

  6. Ikea does have some great pieces at great prices, Janell! The only thing that holds me back is the assembly, so I will usually go another inexpensive route. That wallpaper really was worth it. It is just perfect in that room!

  7. I think a room decor is made by the mix of high and low. This is going to be great because you have and eye and the perfect touch!

  9. Oh Janell I adore how this space is coming together!
Sophisticated yet comfy for the kiddos, gender-neutral but with panache.
And well, the contrasting color choices are delish.
    Love the Expedit, btw.
Can't wait to see the reveal, Alcira

  12. I'm a huge Expedit fan and recently squeezed one into our home office. Be warned, though - the box will be *really* heavy, so plan on having help when you go to the store!

  16. This post makes me think of this week's Design Star. Sometimes splurging on that one really expensive thing is what makes the room. LOVE the wall paper!

  17. Great wallpaper! Nothing like some big pattern to wake up a room. Love the idea of boxy shelves on the other wall. Can't wait to see your end result.

  22. What a difference you have made with the room. It's becoming really beautiful. Love the contrast with the dramatic wallpaper.
Ikea's Expedit would be great to use as a bookcase. The endless ways of using these units are so welcoming in any home. I especially like the possibility of using a mix of the doors, shelf inserts and drawers.
I have the largest Expedit in my home office, and I'm very happy about it.

This is a great opportunity to say that I love your blog!

  23. The paper was worth every red cent...I love it!! It makes such a statement and I don't think any furniture could have that much impact, so you did great! You are so creative there is no doubt in my mind you will come through with a fabulous looking room that does not in any way reflect that anything got compromised in the process!! I have total faith in you....the room is already beautiful!

  24. I use a couple of the Expedit units in our playroom. However, since I don't have easy access to Ikea I found that the ITSO storage boxes from Target are a great fit - I used the large plastic boxes but they have fabric boxes also.

  25. That pic is of 2 Billy bookcases with glass doors, not the Besta. The sign indicates that, but also the Billy bookshelves have that little toekick on them, but the Besta ones start at floor level and have little feet.

Personally, I love the Expedit units. They make anything you put in them look great and organized. They're a pain to put together though. Just remember if it won't go together with the dowels, be VERY careful if you use a mallet. The center of the sides is hollow/honeycomb.

  26. Thanks for the correction! I also had images of the Besta, but didn't post. Great advice about putting the piece together as well...

  27. No problem. I learned the hard way. One of my Expedit units has a good sized hole on the bottom. Luckily, it was destined for casters anyhow. Put a towel over the piece, use a rubber mallet, and tap very gently on the edge.

  28. I think I could put the Expedit in every room and be happy!

  30. Hi Janell--I'm loving your sofas! Did you end up buying the Lisbon from Van Gogh Designs? They don't look like what's on their website? http://www.fallsdesign.blogspot.com

  31. The wallpaper is amazing and looks perfect for the room. If you want my advice then I suggest the open backed shelving storage unit, as I agree the brown showing through will open up the area more. We live in the country so getting to an IKEA takes a bit of organisation, maybe I can visit on my next trip to see my sister as she lives in the city and loves to shop!
