New Project: Bonus Room!

This is a BIG room, with easily a dozen or two DIY projects to keep me busy. Actually going up to the space to take the pictures made me feel a little overwhelmed! The is the last uncharted territory in our home, apart from the backyard that needs endless help {and a sizable budget} to get it looking fab. So I'm staying away from there for now and tackling the bonus room, where elbow grease will get me a long ways!

This room is used for movies, playing, sleepover parties and sometimes a little work. Can any more purposes be fit into a space?!

A neglected coffee table was the one piece of furniture the dog decided to damage when he was brought home. Finally it will be refinished, maybe with a fun color.

And speaking of color, of course the walls will get painted. I'm taking inspiration from the large print and some swatches I picked up at Calico Corners.

I can't even show you what disaster lies behind these doors. Some organization will be key to the success of this room.

Windows: something DIY and pretty.

Another item in the room, an old school house chair, needs an update. It is the only piece of furniture I have from my Chicago days. But it will be hard to refinish it, as it will mean removing the fun stickers Isabella put on the back. Or maybe I'll find a way to incorporate them into the redo.

These stickers were found during an extended stay years ago in Hong Kong and Seoul, when my husband was working on a project in those cities. Isabella was just one, and the stories I could tell about her popularity...a blond baby! You'd have thought she was a rock star with all the attention she received everywhere I took her.

A large blank wall. Amazing I haven't touched it yet...perhaps an art/photo wall?

I'm certain something fun can be created from this basic side table...

...and you know these fixtures are about to be history!

Finally, this table belonging to my dear grandmother will be rescued from the garage...

...along with this Bergere chair I had talked about redoing over a year ago! Its days of being a bike and scooter rack are about to end.

Cool! Another room to work on!

If this space was in my house & had all the functions you listed, I would be afraid to make it too pretty. I would worry every time the kids were using it for fear of all my work being ruined.
Can't wait to see what you do with it & how you do it. I hope you show the process from the planning stages to the completion.

yes, Mary, you are right...it has to be able to take a beating! It's not uncommon to have 6 kids in the space doing their thing! Janell

A big project, definitely, but one that looks like you could have a lot of fun with, Janell! You get quite a lot out of that bonus room. I'll bet you've got lots of ideas running through your head!

Funnn! I can't wait to see where you take this room! SO many possibilities : ) Any thoughts on the wall color?

Janell @ Isabella and Max said...

Wall color, the pressure! No, haven't gotten much beyond what pieces will stay in the room and what new will need to be found. I guess I better start thinking! Janell

This makes me feel better knowing that not every room in your house is perfect - yet. Staying tuned to your creative process. Will be fun for sure.

Was this the room you were going to build your office in? I think I remember a post about that a while back?

Either way, it will be amazing, I am sure!!!

Janell @ Isabella and Max said...

Genny, smart girl, I wondered if anyone would recall. Yes, I was. Until I got the bids. $10,000-12,000 seemed a bit much for a couple walls, a door and window. Oh, and some wiring, but seriously?! I rethought my plan afterwards, but will still incorporate some work space area.

Oh, good I was hoping for an update on the walls as well. This is so funny as I have been trying to take before photos of our bonus room this week and I get hot and sweaty each time I walk up there. It's quite the all purpose room and needs major updating. Can't wait to see what you do {also my workspace sans $10,000 walls!}

LOVE it. This room of odds and ends are what most of us have in one way or another in our homes. I can't wait to see what you do with it! Everything you touch turns to gold!

Janell @ Isabella and Max said...

Annie, you summed it up perfectly. This is indeed a room of odds and ends and the challenge is to make it all look fresh and like it belongs together. Not so much the case at the moment!

We're redoing our bonus room too. My finished product will be a revamped & dedicated studio for my jewelry & metal arts though. (so excited!) Wish I could wiggle my nose and the hard labor would be done like magic though . . . if only!

A lego wall maybe ;) Can't wait to see, what you do with it, I am sure it will be fabulous!!

I haven't got one idea for you... except POST OFTEN! I think a bonus room to decorate could go either way-- desirable- or -disastrous- ...just deciding what to do with a room this size and extra at that! You know a bedroom has to have a bed, night table, dresser, etc. A dining room -a table and chairs...
But a bonus room.
Hmmm... I can't wait to see what you pull out of your hat, Bullwinkle!

I'll be watching (and learning), Pat

I can't wait to see it all come together!
The overwhelmed feeling you had just looking it at is how I've been feeling about this apartment. The difference is that I don't have my trusty go-to spots like Home Depot or my fabric shops, or discount big box decor shops to pick up what I need which just adds to the challenge (and the expense)!

Wow! oodles of potential! I would love to see what 'diy' you have for curtains...that is what I am up against right now...not wanting to spend $$ on custom and not loving the pre-fabs! Can't wait to see the results!

Janell, it's going to look awesome! I'm so excited to see it come together. That red chair is so awesome...love the stickers and the history behind it (: I bet Isabella was a darling blonde baby!
