I have a few pet peeves when it comes to interiors, and high up on the list is harsh lighting. I don't care what else is done in the space, if the lighting is wrong, the space has no way of living up to its potential. This is where the beauty of a little thing called a dimmer switch comes into play. Super cheap and super easy to install!
Back when we were having our first house built, I remember my surprise at the upgrade charge of sixty dollars to add a dimmer...per switch! Seriously, I thought? I've seen those things at the hardware store for under $10, how hard can they be to install? I quickly found out not hard at all, as I had none installed while the house was built, but went to town adding them afterwards.
When I purchased the cute little round bulbs for the fixture to be hung in the dining room, I realized I would need to also install a dimmer in this room, so picked up one at the same time.
Now while the actual dimmer only took me 5 minutes to install, finding the right switch to turn off at the breaker box took several times longer. Irritating! I literally tried every single option until I found the one that turned off the dining room light. Turning one off, coming back in to see if the light was off. No. Back out. Again and again! Talk about bad guessing. Obviously 'dining room' was not labeled on the panel, but it is now!
Once I was out of danger of shocking myself, I refreshed myself with the directions...
...and removed the wallplate to pull out the switch.
The hardest thing, apart from the breaker box issue, was releasing the wiring from the original switch. You are supposed to insert an object into the tiniest of holes to release them. Digging around in my tool box I finally saw one of my Allen wrenches was small enough to fit in and do the job.
Then the new dimmer switch was installed, connecting the wiring by screwing wire nuts over them clockwise.
{Disclaimer: Before trying this project, obviously refer to the directions provided in the purchased dimmer!}
Tip: Test to make sure the dimmer has been installed correctly before proceeding, by turning the power back on to see if the fixture lights up. I've not done this before and have wasted a lot of time!
Once I knew the switch had been installed correctly, everything was tucked back into the wall box, the switch secured with screws...
...and the wallplate put back into place.
Bright.
A little less bright...
...fading to soft light.
Dim.
And finally, barely there light.
It will be even better once the new fixture is installed, and I just got a call, the chain has arrived!
No more delays.

Installing dimmers has been on my "to do" list for awhile now.
Thanks for reminding me.
This is something I need to do now that I have the chandelier in my bedroom, heehee;)
Thanks for the tips!
I had no idea it was that easy to do yourself. Adding dimmers was on my list of things for our handyman to do on his next visit. I can't wait to try this, thanks Janell.
You're so right, bad lighting can ruin any lovely space! Isn't it crazy what contractors try to charge for simple things?! Hooray for DIY!
Good for you. I'm always amazed and appalled at what builder charge for and change at all. You were very savvy to install after-market. I wish more people would follow your lead! Revolution!! LOL
TIP: Before heading to the store to pick up switches, determine if you need Single Pole or Three Way Pole Switch...ie: does the switch go to more than one light. In my dining room the switch only controls this one light fixture, so I needed a Single Pole switch.

Wow... I'm not handy at all, but after seeing this post I feel inspired to do more things around my house. Maybe not electric things (just yet and since I'm pregnant), but it's always great to know something, just in case you have to do it.
Thank you!
Have a great day!

Could not agree more with your pet peeve..yuck I hate bright harsh life..it can ruin even the most beautiful room. Dimmers are so great and relatively inexpensive, I think it should be illegal to not have them..haha. Great post!
I just about finished installing dimmers in my house. It really helps to reduce energy costs as well. Everything looks so much better in dimmed light... including me.:)
Good for you for embarking on an electrical project. I was too much of a chicken and hired Philip the electrician.

mb, you know, if you aren't comfortable with electrical projects its much better to leave it to the professionals!! The important thing, you have dimmed light! :)
Janell
This looks easy enough. I will just get my husband to do it! :) Thanks for the tips, Janell!

Look at you! I would of made my husband do it. Impressive. Maybe I will have to bust one out someday!
Thanks for sharing this! I normally have my dad come over and do this for me, dimmers make such a huge difference! Can't wait to see your light all finished!
I am so with you on this one. I have dimmers on most of my lights if not all. I also have dimmed table lights. I have them on at night and my hubby laughs because he says it takes a half an hour to turn off all my pretty little lights. This girl love ambient lighting. I even have some turned on during the day. For my lamps that are just for ambiance I use the 7watt refrigerator lights so it does not use too much energy. I even have a lamp on my front porch which stays on all the time to greet guest. Speaking of guest!!! Yes I am fine, I knew the post I did would have mixed opinions. I love to hear what others think about my pet peeve. xo Kathysue
I couldn't agree more. They are super easy to install and did you know (I'm sure you do), that if you just dim your lights a little (not even all the way) there's a significant energy savings plus it helps your light bulbs last longer. I have dimmers all over my house too.
dimmer switches are essential for great ambiance as you said...and fabulous tutorial..it's been a while since I've added light fixtures and switches to a house but I'll be doing that soon enough..great refresher..

Good to know, thanks for sharing!
I love dimmer switches! Thanks for the tutorial!
My dad has referred to my preference for dimmer switches as an "obsession". I love them for every room! And you're right, so cheap and easy to install.
It makes all the difference. I've installed them in all my rental apartments, my handyman only charges $15!
I enjoy reading your blog, and stumbled upon it through Thrifty Decor Chick. Love the current chandelier, do you mind me asking what style it is or where it was purchased? :o)
I am definitely going to try this is my dining room when I install my new fixture! Thank you for the step by step...you make it look so easy. :)

Ah yes....first thing I do in a room if it doesn't have them. And actually something I've done before myself. And if I can do it, anyone can! Cannot wait to see your fixture up. And thanks for the compliment on my blog this AM...means a lot coming from you!
Dimmer switches are vital for any room. I hate eating dinner at friends' homes where there is harsh light flooding down on everyone. Conversation is smoother, food tastes better, and people are happier in soft, muted light! thanks for this post!
Isn't it funny how just that little detail completely changes a room! I LOVE dimmers, they're just about everywhere in my house, but I could sure use more, great job on the install, it's a must read tip for all decorators!

I love dimmers too-We just pulled all our own electrical throughout our house we're renovating and I had my hubby install them in the living, dining and bedrooms. They make a big difference!
One of the many things I appreciate about you Janell is you can do anything and encourage us to do so too. When I wire a light fixture my friends are horrified. I always told my mom, why wait for a man to do something when you can do it yourself. Taught my daughter's just that!
Have a great weekend ahead.

I'm with you on no harsh light. I have dimmers on most of my lighting. I'm constantly turning the lights down, but my husband likes things bright so he follows me and turns them back up! It's a constant "battle of the sexes" on the lighting front.
Totally agree! Unfortunately incandescent light bulbs are being phased out due to government energy regulations and CFLs cannot be dimmed, so if you like a soft light you'll need to stock up on incandescents while you can.
I need to increase my handy skills. This seems like a good place to start. Thanks for the tip!
Best!
We've installed many dimmers over the years (well, actually my guy is the one who does all the work - I just come up with the ideas!) kudos to you for taking it on yourself :)
You are so right about harsh lighting. Because we're living in a rental and can't install dimmers, we primarily use lamps at night. When someone does turn on the harsh overhead lights, it always makes me cringe.
Thank you for this tutorial. We were supposed to have a dimmer in our dining room, but somehow ended up without it. I'm glad to know it's an inexpensive fix!
dimmer switches are one of my favorites. in the same category are the light switches with sensors/timers. i have one in the laundry room and in our closet. genius. somehow these are the two spaces i never remember to turn off the light when i leave.
i've been meaning to do this in our master bedroom (i hate when bedroom lights are so in your face, you know?)...but, ugh. i know it's easy, but touching wires freaks me out for some reason!
must. suck. it. up.

I love dimmer switches. We have one in almost every room!
*** Janell, I am SOOOO WITH YOU on this!!! ***
I had "special" (ie: "fancy-schmancy", to include special colors to match the walls) dimmers installed in EVERY SINGLE room (Yes, including powder rooms, shower rooms, pantry, etc)... (we're talking "they do everything but say 'God Bless You' when you SNEEZE!")... Mucho $$$$, and only to find out later it could have been done for muuuuuuch less!!! BUUUUT... we were moving in/getting settled & I just H*A*D to have themn... "YESTERDAY"!!!

YES harsh lighting is my ULTIMATE pet peeve in interiors, it completely ruing the ambiance. I leave restaurants with bright lighting, ruins the meal for me.
I want dimmer switches in every single room of the new little house we are building! Love them!
Kristin
This is one project I've been wanting to do myself...thanks for showing us how and taking a little of the fear out of it!!
Yea! Dimmers everywhere! They will have to pry the last incandesent bulb from my frozen arthritic grasp before I give up my dimmers. ( I refuse to pay $10.00 per for a dimmable CFB!)
Adding dimmer switches in the bathrooms eliminate the need for night lights. Just turn the light as low as possible for an illiminated room in the night.
teaorwine
This looks so easy and i was afraid to do it myself :) Great post!
Que bonito, me encanta!!!
