Younger siblings, they always get the hand-me-downs, while too often the older one is taken off to select a new item. Such was the case when Isabella outgrew her bike, which just happened to be the size Max needed. Luckily it wasn't pink or purple, and it is a great bike in perfect condition...but still! So I promised him we'd give it a new paint job, to make it his.
After removing the seat and front wheel, the parts we didn't want to get sprayed were covered with lots of paper and tape.
Max is a huge Oregon Ducks fan, so of course he selected green and yellow paint during a visit to the hardware store. First a layer of yellow was sprayed...
...and after the paint dried, paper was wrapped around the larger areas to remain yellow, while a few details were blocked out with tape!
More painting, this time with green, and then a long wait. A whole day. It was torture.
But finally we all pitched in to unwrap the bike. "It's like opening a present, but a lot harder!", Max said.
Lots of paper, lots of tape, lots of little pieces of tape to remove. But it was worth it.
Happy, proud Max. It's now his bike!

What a great idea. I'm sure he loves his new custom bike!
So cute. Love that third pic from the bottom...looks like "I can almost ride my bike...just a little more tape to go..."
*oops, 4th pic from the botttom. :)
P.S. It took a lot of patience to tape that all up, but it looks like it was more than worth it. You've got one happy camper with his custom bike colors.
What an awesome bike! Yes, we know about handmedowns too well around here. Good for Max for making it his own.
Note to self: Buy a used bicycle and make it AWESOME.
This is so great Janell.
So great!!

It looks like you've go one happy little boy there.

What a nice idea. I never thought about spraying a bike. My daughter always gets my son's hand me down bikes.
I love that....recycle and make it cute! Most people would just chuck it and buy new :)
That is the COOLEST idea!!!! OMG, who would have thought of that?! I know, Janell Beals!
Please tell us how many other kids in the neighborhood gets their bike painted! THis is going to start something;)
Yay - Ducks! Try selling that at the Duck store, you might be onto something! Half our track team proudly wears Duck paraphernalia since visiting Eugene to compete in the Oregon Relays! My daughter lost or had her hood stolen at a local track meet and was devastated! I am going to have to get her one this summer when we drive through Oregon!
Being a bike fan- LOVE the makeover on the bike. Lucky Max to have a mom with such amazing spray painting skills :)
WOW! you even paint bikes!! you are a hardcore diy'er! i LOVE it.
NICE! I've spray painted a bike for my daughter too.. She was thrilled, watching it morph from red and blue to purple.. JUST for her. :)
great job. looks brand new and now no one will ever know it was a hand me down.
Great job on the makeover and making Max happy!
That's adorable. Know that scene all too well. Poor Grady rode his sisters pink tricycle for a couple of months.
Very Cool Bike Mr. Max!! Love the colors!!! Great job Janell, you clever Mommy. I gave you a shout out today on my blog post!!! Thanks again for always inspiring us to be resourceful, Kathysue
I remember getting hand-me-downs from my aunts! For a whole year I had a "rose" colored sweater -- aka it was a pink sweater that was shrunk in the wash.
But I am happy that the transformation turned out so well and he loves his new bike.
What a ingenious idea! Looks like Max is loving his transformed bike!
I woud say that Max has one very special bike there! I love the close up photo of Max helping to remove the tape. So much anticipation written all over his face. Great transofmation on the bike, Janell! I bet Max is proud to ride it!
Great idea and it is a one-of-a-kind! Thank you for sharing.
