Did you know that America's happiest city is Boulder, Colorado?
Breathtaking surroundings, sunny skies, healthy lifestyles...they apparently add up to a great and happy life. To see more beautiful examples of homes from Boulder and the surrounding area, read my latest Ideabook for Houzz.
And speaking of having a great life...for the last year I have enjoyed writing a weekly Houzz Ideabook and posting about them here each week. However, with the launch of House of Fifty I'm looking hard at my commitments and what simply has to go...so I can continue to enjoy a balance between my work life and personal life, which for me equals enjoying a great life! As a result, I've had to say goodbye to this weekly writing assignment. I'll certainly miss it, but at the same time it will free up a few hours for other things, so it's a good decision.
What about you? How do you balance the various commitments in your life?

Lucky for me, I don't have any commitments anymore. I retired early & the toughest thing I have to deal with is what to make for dinner.
With extra time available to you now, you can focus on your baby...Ho50.
Sounds like a smart decision!! And, I have to say Boulder is amazing!! Love it there!!!
I'll miss your weekly posts at Houzz, but I'm thrilled for you that House of Fifty has been an immediate success for you. You are a hard worker and I respect that so much, but I respect your desire to put family first even more.
There was just a great piece on Boulder, Colorado on the program CBS Sunday Morning detailing this (A really outstanding show BTW) and it was very interesting. I have been there and it is nice... So glad to hear that you will focus on House of Fifty - Great Stuff!
Yes, I have read that too. But I think that Portland is pretty high up on the list as well. Right?
Looks like you had a fantastic time in NY! It was fun to see all your images (and I would also have gone totally gaga when meeting Thomas O'Brien. You lucky cat! Love your green top BTW).
I am off to Sweden. And after THAT, Portland.
Warm hugs to you,
Mon

Oh I feel you on commitments! I'm doing a way with a few of my own:)
That sounds like a good decision..iyt'll give you more time for your other ventures..as for balancing between different commitments..family alwys comes first and I take it from there! happy weekend to you , janell! xx meenal
If I could not meet my family's needs then something else would have to go. Family is always first, because when it is all said and done the commitments and most of the people involved will come and go in your life, but your family will always be there!!! Family first and bravo for you for re-grouping and doing what is best for you and Yours!! Kathysue
I have never been to Boulder - i can't imagine living in the "middle" i need water. But i think i might just have to check Boulder out. I think Portland and Seattle are pretty fantastic. .
Was only there once when I much younger, but a friend of mines two older sons have settled there and now they are going to eventually buy a second home there and divide their time...she thinks its magical and incredibly civilized and the beauty of the surrounding area is postcard perfect. Whats not to love?
I think it's a "good, better, best" situation. You are giving up something that is good for something even better or even the best option! Sometimes when my committments that are really "good" get in the way of my "best," which for me is my husband and family, I just have to let it go.
We know a swingin' bachelor who just picked up, left NYC, and moved to Boulder last year. He's never been happier!
Oh boy am I glad that they came up with a new city to name happiest place! Last year they named my little town happiest place in America:

and our little town went crazy in the not so happiest way! Maybe it will get back to normal ;)
I'm not surprised it's Boulder, or anywhere in Colorado, given the amount of sunshine they have a year, as well as the spetacular views. Hmm, maybe I need to take a trip out there. :)
I'm not the best at balance, but I've gotten a lot better. Burning out will do that to a person!
:)

I have thoroughly enjoyed and will miss your houze posts, and will continue to look forward to House of Fifty.
I may not live in Boulder, but I think when you surround yourself with happy people, you'll be happy too!
I'll miss you on Houzz, but I appreciate prioritizing commitments.
Onward and upward!!
I've become a master at balance. I just decided one day that my health, happiness and family come first and it was life changing. Everything either has to go or it can wait. It really can happen:)
Hi Janell,
When I don't have the right balance in my life, everything suffers...I have found it crucial to cut back the minute I start to feel stressed.. it's so much better for me this way than to wait until I am at my wits end...good for you to find where to draw the line and keep that equilibrium in balance in your life..

LOVE Boulder!
Balance? what's balance???
To balance various commitments, I'm starting to delegate tasks. Hopefully my new intern will lighten the load for me. Congrats on making a decision that helps to balance things out!
