I've Been Banned From Future Use of Spray Paint!

Now that the beautiful brass has been revealed after hiding under layers of spray paint primer and matte black for the last two years...I officially banned myself from using any spray paint. (At least until I weigh the consequences for an adequate amount of time to ensure I will not regret my actions!)

After exploring several options to remove the paint, Smart Strip did the job.

The arms and smaller areas required a couple applications, to get all the little stubborn flakes of paint out of the corners and cervices, but all I had to do was wipe on Smart Strip, wait an hour or so, and come back to wipe away with an old towel.

Then I put on one of the brass bobesches I found to dress up and add a little funky character to the strong clean lines of the fixture, to see how they looked now that all the black paint was removed.

Aren't these fabulous!

Yeah, a great match! I hadn't been completely sure the metals would end up being so similar.

Before, prior to the paint being removed.

And after...(these crystals are extras from another chandelier, next I'll need to find the ones I'll be actually using on this fixture.)

And now the light fixture is off to the lamp shop, to get a longer wire installed so it can be hung in our dining room...more slow progress, huh?!

I have to say the brass is just stunning...its just the right shade, not too shiny or "brassy" I hate that real yellow brass, you got it just right! Can't wait to see it all hung up!!!!!!

Ha, slow progress! Can it be any slower than the completion of my bedroom! I so glad that you were able to restore the light fixture. It is going to be fab when it's done!

That's a strict punishment don't you think? Chalk it up to a learning experience. Plus you have educated your readers of the wonderfullness of Smartstrip.
How are the bobesches staying in place? It looks like you just slid them up the arm.
I'm anxious to see what you think are the "right" crytals.

Love how this project is coming together. Brass seems to be coming back into fashion and your light fixture is beautiful. I just posted about how to age brass as I love the old looking brass but not the shiny lacquered kind so popular a while back.

You know, I don't EXACTLY recall what the brass looked like prior to painting, but PERHAPS a couple of years under the paint aged it a bit, helping to give it this softer worn finish? If so, perhaps I should be thanking the spray paint instead of banning it! Janell

you know i've had the same thought. Im wondering now with all the brass being back "in" if there's going to be a shortage of paint strippers kinda like back in the day when there was a shortage Heirloom White spray paint! LOL

LOVE the new look !!!! and the crystals are just perfecto!!

Glad it worked so well for you, I wondered if the stripper you mentioned would work on the smaller, hard to get areas. It looks like it worked perfectly. Love the shape of the fixture and the details you added.

I can't wait to see it finished. Those shots of the different parts of it is such a tease. And I wouldn't completely banish the spray paint from your house - because you just never know when you might need it.

NOOO! Don't ban the spray paint. I have been on a thriftring spree lately and have been spray painting the crap out of everything including an accidental coat on the deck. I love the soft finish of the brass and can't wait to see it hung up.

The brass is beautiful. About a year ago I wanted to spray paint a chandelier of my parents. My dad said no way, that brass would be back. He was right. I am sure there are a lot of people stripping the paint off now :).

where did you get the smart strip at? I am removing paint from my dining room table and its proving to be a lot harder than i ever imagined!

Janell @ Isabella and Max said...

I purchased the smallest quality from this site. It should be enough for a table! It really is great stuff, let me know if you use it how it works. All the best, Janel
