I finally got to a little project that has been on my to-do list since last fall! How time flies, seriously!
In our house is a growing collection of painted canvases by Isabella and Max, and here is a quick way to add simple frames that provide the finishing touch to these masterpieces!
I began by picking up lengths of maple trim measuring 1 1/2 x 3/4 inches at Home Depot. I still haven't added a decent saw to my arsenal of tools, so a friend was kind enough to help me cut the trim down to the needed lengths with mitered corners. Afterwards the cuts were lightly sanded smooth using fine grit sand paper.
Originally the plan was to stain the wood, but with the art hung on darker walls the frames would have ended up fading away. Excellent, this project just got even easier with the decision to work with the natural wood tone, which looks fresh with the colors in the paintings.
Wood glue made assembling the frames super easy and fast...
...with glue also being applied to the canvas edges.
The frame was held in place with books while it dried, simple, simple, simple! As the canvases are small and light, I didn't think nailing the corners with finishing nails was necessary. Time will tell if I'm right!
Then it was on to repeat the steps for the second canvas.
I like the deep profile of the frames, allowing the canvases to sit back within the frame. They look simple and modern and elevates the art!
And do you notice the layout of the rooms? Family room on the left, master bedroom on the right. Do you see how the TV sits on the same wall as the head of the bed? This drove me crazy when we first moved into the house. I remember one night I went to be early and my husband was watching some sports show. I kept saying, "turn it down, turn it down, I'm trying to sleep!" The next morning he told me he had ended up standing a few inches away from the screen with the volume on one! Poor guy, we ended up adding a second TV upstairs in the bonus room, to avoid this issue from that point on.

WOW..you've got some real artists at home, Janell...please don't mind if i say that your frames are completely overshadowed by the art..though i have to admit they do help enhance the paintings..great job!! xx meenal
Another great idea. Learning to use a miter saw is on my list of 100 things to do before I die.
What a difference a frame makes! I love children's art, and clearly the frame elevates it to the perfect level of importance. Tell the kids how wonderful their paintings are from me. By framing them you've said to them that their art is worthy, and that's a great message to convey!
I love this idea! Talk about simple.
What an awesome way to celebrate children's artwork! Beautiful!
Nice frames. I could see how the TV behind where you sleep could be an issue. Love the view of your bedroom.
such a cute idea! I've looked through several pages of your blog and must say I am now exhausted!!! Your projects!! I feel like such a slacker;) I'm off to look at my to-do list now, you've inspired me!!

Well done, they look fantastic!
Cute idea ! Janell, your house is adorable. Everything is perfect.
What a great idea! Of course I saw a minter box in GW and didn't it. Tisk Tisk Tisk. Such a great project!

Great Idea! I have a ton of unframed canvas art, I may have to try this out!
I like that idea. It makes them look so much more finished. The older I get the more I realize that no house, no matter how grand, has a perfect layout. We have a bathroom way too close to the dining room . .. what was the builder thinking????
You amaze me- these look so good- I have piles of kid canvases that I really should attempt this one- they look so much more finished.
Love the frames! We display our kids' artwork as well - I think it adds so much to one's home. I hear you about the TV. My husband put the big screen with surround-sound in our basement, and there are times I have to march down from the top floor of the house to tell him to turn it down. Ugh!
Nice frames and children's artworks. We had the same situation with our previous house with the living room tv sharing the wall with our bedroom but it's the other way round. It's me who stayed up late and watch tv while my husband was trying to go to bed. He kept asking me to turn down the volume so I ended up going to bed early as well...
The frames look great! Our tv is louder behind it than it is in front of it. So weird.
They both look wonderful.
Those look amazing. I have been planning on doing exactly the same thing with my daughter's art. I hesitate because less than 6 months have passed since my last proect with the mitre saw and I have not fully recovered from the mental trauma:) It's the puzzle of the cuts that makes me insane. Love that you left the wood raw.
You're such a good mom. What great artists too! I really need to do this for my daughter. She'd feel so proud!

Sometimes I want to slap myself! How easy was that????
Miter queen!!! Love that splash of color. Kidlet color...perfect!
I love the art and frames. I'm sure your children are very inspired to be even more creative.
*** What a beautiful, loving way to celebrate Isabella and Max's accomplishments, Janell! You honor them AND introduce a special "personality" to an already UBER LOVELY and ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL FAMILY HOME!!!
I SO ADMIRE YOU & your TALENTS, my friend!

The art is great - very talented and the frames work perfectly! Great point about the TV... there are always certain things you encounter in different homes that just aren't thought-out or practical. xo
Such a great idea- and I'm loving the look of the unfinsihed wood here
