Earlier this week while reading Sarah's blog, Modern Country Style, I learned she would be hosting a linky party today called 'Define Your Blog'. What great timing, I've been thinking about my blog and it's future recently. So I immediately commented I'd be linking up a post and then started to wonder what on earth I would write!
The start to my blog could not have been more random or with less thought. Sorry, no grand mission statement behind this venture! Rather, upon my husband's suggestion one night, we went onto blogger and set up Isabella & Max Rooms. The idea was that it would be a good extension of my website and a useful business tool. Then I basically forgot about it. Occasionally I would post something, but it wasn't until the start of our Master Bathroom Redesign did I see the opportunity to post on a more regular basis, covering all the steps and projects done to transform the room.
I quickly found it was a lot of fun to work on projects knowing I would get the opportunity to share the process and my ideas with people beyond my immediate family. (I think they were happy as well, no more knocking on my door only to be immediately dragged to whatever room I was working on to review my latest project!) Additionally, the process of thinking through how I was going to describe and explain my projects and decisions in a post had the side effect of making me a better designer. It forced me to more sharply analyze the choices for each part of a project and also pushed me to be more creative.
So far, so good. Then a couple people found the blog and it did begin to generate more client work. I have to say, however, the two things that have been the most rewarding aspects of writing this blog were completely unexpected. The first is how I hear from people on a frequent basis that something I've posted about has inspired or helped them tackle a project. Knowing very little about blogs when I began, how would I have had any idea this would happen?! The second, equally surprising, are the connections and friendships I have made through blogging. If someone had asked me to write a mission statement recently it would have read: Enjoy the process of transforming rooms while sharing DIY projects, tips and resources to provide inspiration, with the goal of building a meaningful community along the way.
{Random pretty picture that makes me very happy...Peonies from my Dad's garden.}
Now to the present and future! While this mission statement remains on the mark, a lot has also changed recently! I still adore working on rooms in my home and sharing the process, but I do realize there are a limited number of rooms left to address. Has anyone else thought of this?! When I'm done with the house, then what? In a typical market I'd be campaigning for a move, but the economy and my family are having none of that.
Additionally, an interesting shift occurred after returning home from The Nate Show, where I had the fabulous opportunity to meet so many of my favorite bloggers. I started thinking about what a solitary job it often is, writing for this blog and other publications. What was missing and what I knew I would welcome would be the opportunity to work in a more collaborative environment.
{Sarah, Erika, Lakeitha, Kate...women making a difference!}
{Emily!! So adorable...I like this lady!}
So after a lot of brainstorming, talking with my husband and a few of my friends in the blogging community, I decided to launch the e-zine House of Fifty. To make room for this I stopped taking on client work and got busy lining up contributors for the first issue. It has been a good challenge to get out from behind the safety of the computer, to pick up the phone and to meet with people in person to forward this venture. As the topics covered in House of Fifty go beyond design, it has been refreshing to expand my focus beyond interiors. I adore interior design, but there are so many other areas of life that are also interesting to explore.
{Premier Issue Table of Contents}
I feel change coming on. I know the heart of my blog will remain interior design, but there is so much more that I am also passionate about. I studied art and fashion, working in the clothing industry for years, I am finding time for more exercise these days and in my pursuit of feeling great (to keep up with my kids!), I'm looking at how I eat and what food I serve my family more closely. The list goes on, and some of it I would enjoy writing about here. I think a blog is best when it accurately reflects the person behind the posts and I am beginning to realize if I am to remain excited about my blog and always have content to publish that I'm passionate about, it will probably require a little diversification. I hope you'll be on board with me...

Hey Janell,
I have been a fan/follower about your blog since the last 4-5 or so. beautiful home & always one of the first blogs I open to get inspired. also have signed up for the house of fifty, can't wait for that. Good work.
Also, last week & this week you have showing the lovely flowers from your father's garden. could we have a garden tour post ? I have a first time new garden/home & wondering how to design the garden, any tips ?
I'm totally on board with you. There are times I want to write about other things other than design, because I am passionate about a variety of things. By diversifying a little bit, I'm sure we will all get to know you a whole lot better. Good for you!
I have to agree with a few commenters, it is YOU that shines through this blog! I love how blogging is a creative extension of oneself and you have mastered that. Looking forward to your new ezine, can't wait to get my first issue in the mail!
It's so inspiring me to how your work has evolved over time. I think it's so exciting that you're starting this new venture and that you pursue your passions! I love your blog and style and can't wait to see what the future brings for you! (or you bring to the future!)
I can't wait! You make everything interesting :)
I couldn't agree more...blogging about all aspects of life is much more interesting and satisfying. Looking forward to House of Fifty!
I not only admire the Janell I have gotten to know through this blog, but the way in which you are always pushing yourself and evolving. You are such an inspiration to me. Bring on House of Fifty!!!
So with you. I can totally relate and am already inspired by how my viewpoint/interests have changed because of my blog. I think blogs give you a tool in which to discover passions etc...it helps you figure yourself out in a way. I am constantly inspired by your journey and can't wait to follow along!!! Beautiful post.
Thanks for sharing this, Janell. I'm so proud of everything you have accomplished and to call you a friend in the blog world. I wish you all the best with your new endeavors and I can't wait to follow along! xo
Janell, I think it is funny how both of us have husbands who suggested we start a blog. My husband may fear that he has created a monster now :)
Like Sarah, I will never forget the day that an email from the comment you left on my blog came through saying that you had become a follower. I was beside myself! You have been supportive of me and such an inspiration. I totally agree that a blog should be a reflection of the person and yes, we will run out of rooms - then what?
Looking SO forward to House of Fifty!
Janell - I won't be the first nor the last to say there is zero doubt that all of your readers/followers will be on board 100% with what's next with Isabella & Max and now House of Fifty. We all must evolve or we don't grow, & we stop learning. You have great ideas and opinions to offer and I for one am excited for the future. You are such a talented individual, and you must be brimming with pride for what you've accomplished thus far? So, charge up those batteries, there's great things ahead.

I just found you. So happy I did!! So glad you were a guest on Remodelholic. I am your newest follower. Looking forward to reading about your new adventures!
Lovely post (as they all are) and I can't wait to see what you have up your sleeve. My favorite blogs are not the ones that show me the best ideas and images, but the ones where I feel like I am getting to know a new friend. That is your blog.
I am with you! I love your taste, your writing style and always leave a visit to your blog inspired. Thanks for sharing your thought process and the glimpse into your family life. Your husband as an encourager and collaborator, your creative kids and your dad, who seems to bring just what need when you need it, whether it's manpower or flower power... I look forward to the next phase with the e-zine and expanded topics.
I think it is wonderful you are diversifying, especially since you have the talent, and time to do so. I think what you touched on is important-building meaningful relationships in the blogging community. I think that is wonderful. Best to you on all your new ventures.
Janell, I am right there with you...and I know for my own blog, I just write about whatever strikes my fancy that day. Sometimes it's funny, sometimes it's a recipe, sometimes a design project, and sometimes it's a downfall. I think that as long as I'm me...then that's the best I can offer. And the reality is that for me...I hope that I'm not defined by just one thing! I know you aren't either and I look forward to reading what else makes up the life and interest of Janell Beals! Cheers!
I love the direction you are taking. And, I am feeling very similar. Yes, I am about to start remodeling and decorating our new (to us) home so I will have plenty to blog about. But, I too am really into cooking and getting out with my kids. Family time, etc. I had been wondering how the occasional sharing of recipes, etc. would go over on my blog. Some days I love sharing a fabric or source I've found....but sometimes I feel uninspired on the design front and my interests are on other topics. The common thread is that they all revolve around creating a beautiful home and life for my family. Looking forward to your publication...I am sure it will be wonderful!
What an inspiring post, Janell! This has encouraged me to take a look into my own blog and see the heart and soul of it. I love what you said about it reflecting the person behind the blog. Such a good thing to remember!
I completely agree with your post, your blog is about your life, and you are more than just a designer. You are a mother, a wife, a friend, etc all of which relfect on your life and how you do your job, or decorate your house or live your life! I think it is exciting that your blog has allowed you to grow is so many directions and I think all of your followers would love to hear ablout all aspects of your life.
Janell-I'm a new follower and I have been greatly inspired by your step-by-step approach to your projects. We recently purchased a new home, and I'm slowly tackling each room, which means I'm always looking for more ideas, etc. I would continue to follow your blog if it took a new direction, because I'm confident that the things you write about will continue to be written with clarity, passion, and a desire to see others enjoy the things that you enjoy. Thanks for your design inspiration and I look forward to being inspired in other ways too!
Change is a good thing. I love everything you post and I can't wait to see what is on the horizon!
I know you will always blog about interesting, inspiring and meaningful things Janell. You always have. Even if you're moving in a new direction, I expect that you will still hold true to those things, which is why I enjoy your blog so much! :-)
You are an inspiration to SO many people. There is no question that we will all support your new venture and encourage any additional ventures you might pursue.
LOVE this post Janell! I can't wait to see House of Fifty!!!
I think this is a great idea! Lots of Love, soooo excited!
I'm in, Janell! You have such a wonderful voice in your writing, and the truth is that, as much as we all adore your projects and creative design solutions, we're interested in YOU as well. Looking forward to whatever may come {including House of Fifty!}.

Janell, you have really stood out as not only a genius designer, but a woman with integrity and genuine willingness to encourage and share your opinions with others. I enjoy your blog AND your comments I see on other blogs- I always enjoy hearing what you have to say! I'm excited for House of 50!- grabbing your button now:)
Janell -- love reading this!! I enjoy learning more about you as a person...not just the genius behind the blog projects. I started my blog to quiet all the ideas spinning in my head (and give them a landing place) -- but it seems to only be kick starting something I buried deep when I started having kids! Food, Travel, Fashion, Design...I want to soak it all in. I just need more time. :)
Can't wait for House of Fifty...it will be as fab as you are!
xo
I'm on board with you! You've been a true inspiration to me in many ways since I have started blog reading. One day soon I hope to have one of my own! You are an amazing woman, Janell. You have endless talent and creativity, you offer lots of widsom, support and encouragement to others, you have a can-do attitude, you have a strong sense of balancing your family and career and are a genuine, sincere, very kind and smart woman. I look forward to your new venture with House of Fifty!
I couldn't agree wth you more. So many blogs I read are a bit one dimensiona. I read blogs about single subjects ... cooking, living, eating, designing, exercising, etc. However i do think theres a market for blogging about life. I think that if the blogger is a good enough writer to get her vision thru in a post then it can be about anything relating to life. If you can relate to the blogger and like the blogger then you will enjoy reading about their life and projects. I've read your blog for awhile and even though I'm not a big diy-er I still enjoy reading about the projects... But I'm often left asking myself "who is she?" with many blogs including yours. I perhaps go to the about me section to learn more about the writer to again try to relate more, I.e how does she find the time?, what's her profession, how old are her kids, what time does she go to bed at night to ge everything done? Bottom line is that I think your on to something. I'm excited to read more.
I always enjoy seeing your personal projects and know that your e-zine will be more of a good thing. I'm excited for you, all the best!
Janell that was a great post...just thinking about change and putting it out there makes it easier. I loved seeing the pictures...I actually had the chance to meet Emily also and she is just the sweetest. I also hope to meet Lakeitha as we are both working on Room Service. Love taking this journey with you and I can tell that big things are in store for you.....I am so much older and wiser :) Ha Ha
Great post Janell!! I love your blog and your ezine sounds wonderful too! I look forward to seeing whats coming up next over here! Stopping by from Sarah's party today :)
I couldn't agree with you more! The blog must reflect the person behind the posts.
Your blog is wonderful. I am going to check out some prior posts.
Hi Janell, I'm new at blogging and have found much inspiration from your creations. I have learned much from you. I was especially encouraged when you shared about your humble beginnings and how blogging was not something you did everyday. That gives me hope that maybe my little blog will evolve into something more. Thank you for sharing. One of my favorite moments from your blog is seeing Max's face whenever you completed his room or added something to it. You can definately tell that he is touched by the way you use your gifts to enhance his little world.
I'm absolutely on board Janell!
Cannot wait to see House of 50!
I adore your zest for life and your passion for decor and diy. you are really an inspiration. thanks for doing all you do and bring us along for the fun...!
