I have come to the firm belief that there simply aren't enough colorful lampshades on the market! This is the time of year when most of us feel an urge to bring more color into our interiors and a great way to do this is through accessories. One of those items could be a lampshade or two featuring great color, if only we could find them.
However, there is always a way around not finding exactly what you want in a store. One of my favorite DIY projects is to cover lampshades with fabric. If this is something you would like to try, here are a couple tutorials here and here.
To see more rooms showcasing colorful lampshades, read my most recent Ideabook written for Houzz here.
Have a great weekend! Janell

What a great way to incorporate a 'pop' of color in a room. Thanks for the reminder.
Thank you for posting this again! I was just at HomeSense yesterday annoyed that there were NO bright lamp shades ;-) Looks like I'll be doing it myself.
Another idea that I saw on another blog is to dye the lampshade. Not for the weak of heart, but the results were great!
Wow, do you have the link?! That I would love to see, and perhaps even try. I'm always up for a challenge! Janell
Janell I was wondering if you have ever heard of anyone spraypainting a lampshade in a highgloss color. I am tempted to try that??!! Happy weekend, I am planting Spring impatiens today after a softball game, Yay!! Spring is here, Kathysue
Oh my goodness! SO true. The only cute and colorful lampshades are the ones already attached to lamp bases at HomeGoods! I have the bases, I just want new shades and EVERYWHERE online and in store is blah!
Janell,
I just wrote about my new lamp shades from Pottery Barn (blue damask). I had seen your post about making them but I was lazy (and unskilled) so I bought them instead. I do love the ones I found. Gotta love Pottery Barn!

you could not have used a better image to illustrate your point..looking at the lamp base it would be pretty natural to gravitate towards a black ( or maybe a white)shade..but this one is just amazing..thanks for sharing, Janell..have a lovely weekend! xx meenal
Come check out my tiny tiny blog if you have time and see my yellow lamp shades that I got for a song. I am pairing yellow with black, my business/blog colors. Have a great day.
I'm with you, I would love a colored lamp shade. I've heard about dyeing them but I haven't been brave enough yet to try it.
I've thought about covering lampshades with fabric before but was wondering if it is a fire hazard?!? Does it have to be a certain type of fabric or will anything do? I haven't taken the time to research this and maybe you can save me the trouble. Thanks in advance
If you look at many lampshades on the market the drums are wrapped with fabric, so taking that lead, yes, it is safe.
I'm always annoyed at the utter lack of lamshade choice out there. I'm not sure why I never think of DIYing it- am definitely hopping over to read your article and DIY link- love the look of a punchy shade.
Lampshades are soooo difficult sometimes. I totally agree about the choices available. It's always at the end of the project and it's always just the last thing that will make things sing and then you can't find what you want. Thanks for the links to the tutorials!
Hey, thanks for sharing these great tutorials on the lampshades. You are so right about how difficult it is to find ones you like that are ready-made.

Great idea and you are so right. Something as simple as a change of shade color can add so much pop to a room and have such impact on a space...something I would venture to say most people aren't really thinking about much..I think we all think mostly in white, beige or black! Great post...gets me thinking about all the possibilities!
i've seen a few people dyeing them lately, too... :)
Agree I can never find great lampshades. Internet maybe...but in any local stores here you can only find white shades!! Thanks for the links to tutorial might actually try it this week!!
Couldn't agree more! So hard to find anything other than white, ivory or black.....I suppose most of the ones we see in magazines are custom made?
Love the idea of the coloured lampshade. And the artwork in this vignette is amazing.
I really like the pop of orange. It's not too much but just enough to add a little punch.
