Adding Pattern & Color To Shelving

A simple way to add color or pattern to a room is by lining the back of bookshelves. While one could paint these areas, another approach is to cover poster board or foam core cut to the appropriate size with fabric.

Looking closely at the above detail from a kitchen design by Mosaik Design, it appears this has been the approach taken here. And the best part of this simple DIY project? If you should tire of the fabric choice, simply remove or replace with another style.

To see a wonderful collection of rooms given a dose of personality through adding color and pattern to the walls behind bookshelves, built-ins and ledges, read my latest Ideabook on Houzz.

This is already on my to-do list this spring! I posted my bookcase dilemma last week for the family room, but already have my fabric for the home office bookcases. Fun to see all the different options. Thanks for sharing!

I have been thinking about doing something like this to a cabinet in my dining room. It really looks like a great way to change a piece of furniture without committing to a paint color.

I've been wanting to do this to my living room built-in. I have my foam board and paint, just waiting for that magical moment to appear when I have time to do it! I love your ideabooks and all your other beautiful projects. Can't wait to see the finished bench!

Yes, I can't wait to see the finished bench either! Still waiting on the new nail heads to arrive, and need to sew the lower side panels, but it is getting there!

Have a great weekend! Janell

I'm all about bringing color to the back of shelves. It's a great idea to use a removeable backing, but it's easier to paint! This is my post on painting my bookshelves in orange!

Third option, wallpaper. I wallpapered the back of my desk and I love how easy it was and how great it looks..

Lining the back of shelves with wallpaper is a lovely idea a great way to blend in scraps of left over wallpaper from a feature wall or simply jazz up your display area. The pictures look really pretty & effective

How timely! I have a area that I've been contemplating doing this to but wasn't sure how to approach it. The foam board is perfect.

I used wrapping paper to update our glass-front dish cabinet. I would love to have glass shelves in there. Maybe some day!
