The bench I mentioned in this post did get ordered and it has already arrived. I must say, that was fast Overstock.com! It's exactly as I anticipated, the perfect size, sturdy, and yes...prime for a little makeover.
I'll show pictures of the bench and the first steps tomorrow, but in the meantime I've picked out a fabric.
I'll show pictures of the bench and the first steps tomorrow, but in the meantime I've picked out a fabric.
My initial thought was to cover the bench using the same drop cloth fabric used to make slipcovers for the two chairs sitting at the table ends. But after reading all your comments, and in particular Christine's, I suddenly was very inspired to take another direction!
"I think it's a great idea but I would definitely use a fabric that can't be wrecked since you won't be able to remove and wash like the slipcovers- what abour a faux leather/ostrich etc. That's what I'm using for my kitchen settee- with kids, I think it's the only thing that won't drive me totally batty."
Reading this I was instantly reminded of a few upholstery fabrics I've been intrigued with every time I've noticed them at Calico Corners.
Glossy leather {Vienna in Bamboo}, pebbled leather {Sydney in Pigskin} and Ostrich {Emu in Cream}.
All faux mind you, but wonderfully soft to the touch and quite high-end looking.

I ran over to the store, picked up the headers and brought them home to see the options in the room against the table, slipcovered chairs, paint and wallpaper. (Which is on some sort of extended backorder!) And..there was a clear winner.
Emu in cream. I adore the addition of the texture and the color is just perfect. I can't wait to get started!

The faux leathers are an incredibly useful product, and I've used them often because there are so many choices! This is a fabulous choice for your bench! Can't wait to see it complete!

I am a HUGE fan of faux ostrich leather for the same reason Christine is - it's virtually indestructible, chic and easily cleaned. I used it on a bench in our nursery (http://honeyandfitz.blogspot.com/2010/10/my-diy-nursery-art.html) and I'm getting ready to use it on some Louis dining chairs I'm doing over. Can't wait to see your bench!
I also used a faux ostrich on my dining chairs. It turned out great! see photos...

Oh, Janell! I love it. I have searched high and low including Calico Corner but never thought of this route. Do you think it will be easy to work with. I love the texture of it. My chairs are used daily by the kiddos so they take a beating.
Perfect choice. I love the texture. I can't wait to see what it looks like!!
Nice choice, Janell! I think it will look great and nice to have that texture in the room!
Ooh great idea especially with little ones. :) I love the color and texture of the fabric. I can't wait to see how it turns out!
I love that fabric, I almost used it for my guest bedroom headboard. It will look great on your bench.
Fantastic choice! I can't wait to see the finished product.
Mmm, I LOVE ostrich, fake, real, what-ever, it's so swanky and will look great! I too have been ogling some fabric at Calico-Allora in multi, so the 20% deal is enticing me as well! *Amy
Great choice. I think the texture will add a little fun to the chair collection.
So cute! Wonderful fabric and I'm glad you are doing something different from the chairs to mix things up a little ;)
I love your fabric choice! It'll be fun to see your chairs. I think that's the one I would have chosen. It's got a great texture.
I love the excitement that comes with the start of a new project! The fabric is great!
Very excited to see the finished product! Nicolex
Love all the sneak peaks..and loving everything so far. Its so exciting to see a blank palette come to life with all these glorious goodies! Enjoy......
I must say, I'm feeling this fabric choice!
Can I swoon over your lamp a little more? I just LOVE that lamp!
I just did this -- only I upholstered the top of the coffee table I inherited from my grandmother to protect it from my two-year olds. Weird, I know, but it's durable and reversible, since I can pull it off in oh, a good 16 years. You don't want to know what I've successfully wiped off of there in the last two weeks or so. I think you made an excellent choice! -- Camille

Love it! Can't wait to see it on the bench!
When you show us all the options, my eyes immediately drawn to the faux ostrich leather. The pattern looks great. Good fabric choice. Can't wait to see the finished product.
By the way, fabulous blog. I will be following and linking you. Hope you don't mind.

Excellent idea. The faux ostrich does have a high end look to it. I was considering a faux leather on my kitchen chairs, but reeally loving the look of the ostrich!
Hi Janell - can you give details on that blue lamp you have?? I am looking for something like it for my nursery...thanks!!
perfect idea. gorgeous and functional. we CAN have it all! :))))

Janell...I think that is a fabulous idea...I know it will be great. I once covered a bench at a beach house [6 years ago] in raffia...think wet bathing suits etc...it still looks brand new!
What a wonderful idea! I've been back and forth on what to cover my dining chairs with. I'm heading to Portland on the 25th, so will have to check Calico Corners out!
I bought the same thing a few weeks ago from a lady clearing out upholstery fabrics! I originally planned to cover a square ottoman/coffee table with it, but I'm so in love with it that I'm still deciding where to actually use it. And it was such a great price, that I've been tempted to go back for more!
