The Start Of The Bench Makeover...One Step At A Time

This bench makeover will not get done overnight!

I'm liking the nail head trim, I wonder if I'll be able to recycle them?

Once covered in the faux Ostrich, the look of the bench will most certainly be elevated!

And then there are all these legs. I like the shape, but the glossy black finish is just way too strong. A few sanding sessions will take care of that. Then they'll be stained...or something. I don't want to match the table legs, but I want them to look worn. The benefit? Careful and meticulous sanding is not required. Whew...

I'm getting excited about this makeover! So will the tufting remain? You'll have to be careful with those nailheads, but I think they would look great back on the bench!

Love the fabric choice and think the nailheads would compliment it perfectly.

I love your patience with a project. You really take the time to do it right! Can't wait to see how the bench turns out.

Doing this would scare me to death!
You have to show/tell how you plan on removing the existing leather. Will there be any sewing of the new cover involved?

Just the DIY project i was waiting for..you are right about getting rid of that glossy black paint...way too strong...with your new upholstery a lighter stain( or maybe the natural wood ) would work far better...can't wait to see the next step!! xx meenal

I cannot wait to see what you do with this bench. I'm sure it will be outstanding.

Oh, I have no plan to remove the fabric. I'll be layering a sheet of high density foam over the top, wrapping with new batting, etc. prior to recovering. Do need to remove the nail head trim though, and that is as far as I've worked out the plan!

Girl! You get so much done! I love the sanded legs...add a little gray stain to them, perhaps?

I read on another blog yesterday, that she used liquid sandpaper for hard to sand pieces, like your chair legs. Have you ever tried it?

Phew, all that sanding! And saving the nailheads will take some patience (I don't have it, but I know you do!). Lots of work ahead, but it's going to look totally amazing I'm sure when you're done!

As with everyone I am certainly excited to see this process. I always enjoy how to take us through the process of such great transformations. You make it seem so easy to follow along.

Perhaps one of these days I can accomplish one of your great tutorials.

This will be an interesting project to follow - I really do like the nail head trim and the high quality look and feel of the leather. Good luck!

Do you sand by hand or do you use an electric sander? It seems like an electric would be too big for those...

Question on nailheads: I'm adding some to a dark brown club chair (not leather) and also to a microfiber tufted headboard (espresso)--same guest bedroom. Stumped on finish of nailhead! Antique bronze or antique brass is often shown on brown chairs or headboards. Would you have a suggestion for updating these pieces -- antique pewter nailheads? oversized nailheads on the headboard? or stay in the antique brown/bronze/brass family? I will have to order them online as local suppliers only carry very basic styles. I read your how-to on adding nailheads which inspired me to try this!

I'm excited to follow along on your bench. I just love the fabric that you have chosen. I am getting really inspired to dig in and attempt a reupholstery project. I would like something in your same fabric but think I need to start small and see how I do!

Beautiful! I love the idea of adding the nailhead trim to the ostrich fabric. I think the legs would look perfect in a grey-brown paint with a little sanding to make it look worn. Thanks for sharing and good luck :)

I know you hear it all the time, but I love your blog! Great choice on the ostrich.

Oh, and you can add me to the "yes" tally for the nailhead trim.

Nice work. I came across your blog while “blog surfing” using the Next Blog button on the blue Nav Bar located at the top of my blogger.com site. I frequently just travel around looking for other blogs which exist on the Internet, and the various, creative ways in which people express themselves. Thanks for sharing.
