Getting Back Into The Swing Of It All...Isn't it hard to get back to work after a break? And it didn't help that the first project I needed to address was to finish sanding all these legs!
They aren't perfect, but they are about as clear of the previous finish as they need to be.
And as I was so happy with the result of the refinished table, using clear Briwax, I decided to try this product again on the bench legs.
This time I've ordered a can of Briwax in Tudor Brown, which should give the wood a bit of color to help them coordinate well with the table legs.

While I wait for the Briwax to arrive I've attached the legs to the bench, which was as simple as turning them into their designated holes. I'll remove them again when it is time to apply the Briwax, but having a standing bench in place will help when moving onto the next steps.

Then I started to remove the nail head trim so work can begin on recovering the cushion. It quickly became apparent my goal to salvage and reuse the nails was not going to be entirely successful, as some broke in the process. Amazingly I found the identical style after a few minutes of searching online. What would we do without Google?!

Finally, the faux ostrich from Calico Corners just arrived. I'm crazy about it! With the bench in place and the material draped over the cushion, I'm definitely visualizing where this is redesign is headed. Now to just get it all done...

Er um, it might just be the lighting in the pics, but I noticed that the bench legs look a little reddish from their previous finish - not the colour at all of the table or anything else there really.
Sometimes, if you dip them in a very mild solution of bleach (you'll have to test for strength)for a short period, it just takes out the red tone. It's not the best thing to do to wood, you can't leave them in for long and you'll have to re-sand them afterwards (delightful), but it has worked well for me on past projects - just my restorer's two cents - I'd hate you to go to lots of work and not like the result.

Hi Janell, I can't wait to see the finished results of your dining room redesign. I have a question for you... the dining table that you bought is behumoth in size, did you do all the sanding indoors and if so how did you keep your house from being enveloped in a dust cloud? Also the side board that you painted, did you do the work on it indoors too? I have several projects requiring sanding, painting and or staining and I don't have a crew of muscle men to haul this stuff out the door and back on every whim.

Oh, I'm so busted, yes I did the work indoors. First, I use a sander with a bag, so that collects a large deal of the dust. Then I stop and vacuum frequently. If I waited for warm weather and people to haul things in and out of the house I'd never see progress on anything. would have gotten upset with my purchase!! :) I can't say it is Plus if I had to star at that green table for more than a couple days I ideal, but it works for me!

It's going to look fantastic. I'd love to know how you were able to get the sanding done on those legs in all the little nooks and crannies. I have a piece of furniture that belonged to my late brother that I'd love to restain, but don't know how to get into the turns in the legs.

I just folded sanding paper in half and ran it back and forth in the groove. Went through a few sheets! Hope this helps...:)
