Drop Cloth Slipcovers...Complete!
This table is going to require a lot of chairs, so I thought I'd start with what I already have on hand and make them work. Nothing is wrong with these two chairs except the legs just look wrong against the lovely legs of the table.
Slipcovers made from drop cloths were the inexpensive solution I decided upon. First the chair backs and seat cushions were covered, see here, and next came the skirts. Long lengths were cut from the drop cloth to wrap around the chairs to become the skirts. (I ended up using a 4' x 24' drop cloth for this project, which allowed me to cut these long pieces.)
One edge of each length was hemmed and next their ends were sewn together to create two continuous bands of fabric, one for each chair.
With right sides out, the skirt was draped around the chair with deep pleats pinned at each of the four corners, making sure the hemmed edge just reached the floor.
Once the skirt was pinned in place, a line of pins was run along the line where the skirt would be sewn to the top portion of the slipcover. Next the skirt was removed from the chair, keeping the pins in place...
...and a stitch was sewn along the pin line while also stitching the corner tucks in place.
Next the top edge of the skirt and the bottom edge of the slipcover were pinned together along the stitch line, rights side facing one another, and sewn together.
Afterwards the covers were turned right side out and slipped over the chairs. The hardest part of this project was being okay with the rumpled quality of the slipcovers. I had begun to press them during the first steps and it didn't look great...I quickly realized a little lived in rumbled worn look actually makes these covers look better and to be okay with that!
I like the look of the the natural fabric next to the table...
...and the conflicting leg style issue has been resolved.
Hum...now what to do for the rest of the seating?

Your new slipcovers look great - a perfect choice to go with your table. It sounds like working with drop cloths is a good alternative to other more expensive fabrics.
Janell, you did a fantastic job. I found that after I washed my drop cloth slipcovers , I would shake them out and put back on chairs slightly damp. It really helped smooth the rumpled look. You could also use your scraps for a runner or place mats, maybe stenciled?

I like the natural aspect of them. The trim you added is my favorite part. You could pop any one of your easy-sew-pillows on your chairs and they would really sing.

Once again, you make it look so easy! Love the way they turned out, and you're right about how great the rumpled, natural fabric looks against the greyed wood of the table. So perfect!
I wouldn't say they were easy to do, it definitely required a bit of methodical work and focus. I was tired after working on them, that is for sure! But worth it, the total cost was $17.00, getting the drop cloth on sale! That makes me forget the work pretty fast. :)

I'm thinking that your fashion background made this look easy! At least you know how to drape and pleat! My last experience with slipcovering a huge sofa was so distasteful,(over 10 years ago!)that I haven't broached it again, but you've made this look so easy that I might get my nerve up once more. Wow! You are amazingly talented! I love these! I would love to do something like this to my dining room chairs...mine are very nice, and they have a thick cushion, but they don't have a cushion back like yours...it is just wood...but I love these. Very beautiful! :)

How about a bench or two for other seating? Then you can always match the fabric if you cover that.

I used 12 oz. drop cloths I found at Sherwin Williams. Originally I was going to use the extra 8 oz drop cloth material left over from making the shade in the WC, but then decided the color was too cool and I wanted a heavier weight. The 4' x 24' drop cloth used was around $17.00 on sale.
Thread, I used regular weight Gutermann thread, which can be found at Joann Fabrics. You could certainly opt to use a heavy weight thread, just to make sure the seams are durable...or just double stitch any seams that may need extra strength.
