So Long, Recessed Lighting!

If you have read this blog for any amount of time you already know I am not a big fan of recessed lighting. Yes, in some locations they are the ideal lighting solution, but often I suspect builders use them as the "default" lighting choice with many a ceiling ending up resembling Swiss cheese!

Remembering I had this damaged lantern left over from an HGTV.com project, I pulled it out, removed the broken panels of glass and gave it a paint job.

Ah, looking fresh and ready to be hung in the WC. Next I made a trip to Home Depot to purchase a recessed light conversion kit, which would enable the light to be replaced with the newly refinished lantern.

before

After looking in the track lighting section for minutes, pulling box after box off the shelf in search of my beloved kit, I started to panic. They can't have discontinued this product...what will I do?! Off I went to find help. Returning to the section with an associate, happily he pulled out a kit from the shelves without blinking. Pure relief. And look, the box has a new look; no wonder I couldn't find it.

To read in more detail about how to convert a recessed light fixture, see this post. It truly is a simple process, taking around twenty minutes...and that includes the time needed to find which circuit breaker to turn off and haul in the ladder from the garage. (Note: this kit states there is a 25 lb limit for the fixture that can be hung, important information to consider when selecting which fixture to use with this kit!)

Quickly the recessed fixture was removed, the conversion kit installed and the wiring connected.

Next the fixture was hung and the bulb installed. I have to say I am always thrilled (and relieved) when flipping the circuit breaker after installing a fixture, to see it actually light up. Once I installed a fixture in a dining room and I just couldn't get it right, tried and tried and finally gave up, calling in my Dad for help. What was the problem? The dimmer was turned all the way down...talk about frustrating!

I just love the shadows cast by the fretwork on the lantern, interesting how it enhances the pattern painted on the walls...making it appear more complete? And yes, based on your feedback on Tuesday's post, I'm not touching it. Half done in this case has grown on me and is good enough, especially now, with the addition of the shadows!

I do however need to locate the can of paint used to paint the ceiling and paint the fan vent more thoroughly. There are also a couple of spots where the paint is messy where it meets the wall, but I want to learn how to install crown molding and this small space would be the perfect place to start!

Up next, I have a fun little DIY project to cover the window...hopefully I'll get to that next week. My neighbors will certainly be happy.

Yay!!! The lantern is perfect in this space Janell. Your Swiss cheese comment cracked me up and I'm pretty sure has forever changes the way I think about recessed lighting.

This lantern looks great and certainly adds a lot more personality to the room! Of course, maybe the room's REAL personality has been showing through the uncovered window all along?? *grin*
My SIL has a tiny, uncovered window in her bathroom, so any time I go in there, I make sure I turn off the light. I have a paranoia issue, apparently...
Seriously, I like what you did! Nice reference to Swiss cheese, BTW.

Darling fixture, fabulous touch! I have been intrigued by the can light conversion kits and now think I might give it a try. Oh and did I mention that I LOVE the pattern on the walls and the way it is not everywhere?!

That lantern really turned out great. I love it. I can't wait to see what you come up with for a window treatment.

The light looks so good hung up. You are a brave soul dealing with electricity! I stay away!

I too love the half finished wall, it looks like it was done on purpose, meant to be.

Hmm.. wonder what you are doing to cover up the window, maybe a frosted glass treatment? Roman blind? I'll have to come back to find out!

This post couldn't be more perfectly timed! We are about to install a new light where a recessed light currently is and I've been wanting to see more instructions from people who have done them! Yours looks so great!

I am so excited to be rid of our recessed light...

You may think the neighbours will be happy but they may actually be quite disappointed!!
Love the new fixture and I'm glad you're leaving your walls as is - they look great with the pattern cast by the lantern!
Re: builders and their recessed lights, I agree - our place has huge sloped pine cathedral ceilings in the living room and kitchen and they installed recessed lights into it which shine right at your face no matter where you sit so obviously they are never switched on - what a waste!

It looks great, Janell! I love that you were able to use it in this way, even though you received it damaged.

Do you walk around all day with a tool belt on? Ha!

Sadly all of our recessed lights are in bad locations. So I can't hang a pendant from any of them.

Looks fantastic! And a big "hear hear" to the Swiss cheese comment--recessed lighting is often thoughtlessly installed. Your pagoda hanging light is so chic!

Those directions look daunting - You seem to have no fear when it comes to overcoming barriers to make something happen. Another great result with so many nice touches. I really like how this turned out!

I always love your tutorials, Janell. Such detailed info--makes me think I can accomplish things easily. Even if they're not easy in the end, at least I'm more likely to start! BTW, the lantern works beautifully with the stencilling.

Mary, yes!! Not only are recessed lights sometimes not the best choice, but their placement often makes no sense whatsoever! Off center, etc!

I LOVE your new fixture! And after reading about how easy it is to convert recessed lighting, I'm wishing we had some! It would be much easier than nagging my poor husband to switch out the builder-basic lights :)
The bathroom looks great!

Amazing! As usual. I'll be keeping that one up my sleeve for a little later in my own home. thanks! xo

The lantern is perfect for that space. I must agree that the fretwork totally works in there "unfinished" I am worried if you did the whole room it would be too busy. I like it just the way it is! Keep up the beautiful work!
I was getting ready to paint my daughters dressers and went to get the pro-classic paint and the Kilm only for them to tell me that it can't be made into the color I wanted. So I had to use the Duration line.

Love how it looks and changes the whole feel of the bathroom. Awesome!

Kristin @ My Uncommon Slice of Suburbia said...

Wow! I never would have thought to do this, now my mind is going crazy with ideas for our upstairs hallway. Long hall, lots of lights, always wanted the lanterns, won't spend the money, hmmm.....maybe I won't have to thanks to you!

I believe this is a product produced exclusively for Home Depot by Hampton Bay...I've looked EXTENSIVELY online each time I've posted about this product and can not find it on either company's website. I need to go have a talk with them!!

Wow, your final pic had the door frame, window frame, and wall pattern all lined up, I'm impressed. Dad

Wow wow wow weeee, Janell, it really looks so good! That fretwork wouldn't have cast shadows like that unless the lantern was hung in such a small space, so it is a perfect spot for that lantern. And how funny that it almost looks like the shadow pattern is only where the stencil isn't! Again, like it was meant to be! So happy for you.

Looks fantastic! I love the lantern (I have a similar one in my guest bath actually) and I'm all for swapping out canned lights for fab pendants and lanterns.

And I'd LOVE to see you tackle crown molding (I'm contemplating trying myself but would definitely love to see a how-to from you first!).
