Didn't Someone Say Rules Are Meant To Be Broken?

How do you decide what size rug is right for a room in your home?

While I have my personal preferences, I did a little research on rug size "rules" and then looked for rooms demonstrating each on Houzz. What I think is most interesting about this topic is that for each rule there tends to be another that directly contradicts it!

But of course! Interior design is indeed a very subjective art...

I think this is one of the best things about design. Although there are some things which are considered standard, other things can be done any way you think are beautiful.

* I totally agree "rules are meant to be broken"... most of us use them as guidelines for sure... but (ie.), I STILL canNOT believe it when I see a perfectly FAB DR, and the rug is too small for the diner to pull the DR chair in & out without a "battle" ... you too?

Thats explained well, but my question is. Let say a living room connected to sunroom/den do I have to put carpet that match or its okey to do two diff. color/pattern? that's seems overhelming to me.

Undecided, I just replaced the whole area with hardwood floors.
Although, I had to put one right now since my 2 small dog start to scrath the floor. :(
Thanks and have a great weekend, Janell!

Great question Lana, I think when mixing the designs of two area rugs that are adjacent or can be seen from one another, the same guidelines used in mixing fabrics can be used in mixing rug designs.

Share same colors, vary scale of design, solid with a pattern, etc.

And yes, my biggest pet peeve when it comes to area rugs are dining room rugs where the chairs are squeezed onto the rug. I know it is impractical when actually sitting at the table, but it looks visually awkward to me.

I've seen rooms with huge rugs look great as well as some where even just a rug under the coffee table looks great. I've always followed the "rule" that at a minimum, all the front legs of the chairs and sofa should be on the rug so the furniture doesn't look like it's floating. off to check it out! ... :)

I am well aware I "need" to invest in some rugs for my home.
So far, the only one we have was a rather bizarre gift from my Iranian father-in-law, who seemed to want us to own a Persian heirloom. Sigh. It's not at all a style I would have chosen, but we got enormously lucky that the colors work with our dining room and all the legs fit on it just fine!
Nonetheless, I really wish he'd just given us the $$ to choose our own. I'm pretty sure it's the most expensive thing in our home and it would be nice to love it more. At least I'm not nervous about spills!
One day I'll blog about it :)
In the meantime, I enjoy window-shopping for more contemporary styles.

I was looking at rugs this week for my living room so this article is perfect timing for me. Now, if only my $$ matched my vision...sigh...
