One of the rooms I worked on last summer was Isabella and Max's bathroom, adding a frame around the plate glass mirror and other small projects including installing new light fixtures, towel rings, a chalkboard for reminders and applying a new paint color. The plan was to also paint a stenciled pattern to the wall opposite the mirror, but before that could be accomplished I had to move on to other jobs.
What better way to start the new year than to address an uncompleted project. So I pulled out the stencil and materials to get started!

This is the wall that is about to get dressed up with the stencil pictured below.
The stencil was made for me by Whitewall & Co. based on a design I have used in previous projects, seen here and here.
Using a stencil brush, paint matching the millwork in the room, paper towels and a ruler I got to work.
After determining the layout of the pattern on the wall the stenciling began.
The portion of the wall covered by the chalkboard is marked by tape. Why take the time to stencil behind it, I say!
For more specific details on how to stencil a wall, see the tutorial written for hgtv.com by clicking here or here.
Look for final pictures of the completed room and this wall tomorrow, only several months after I began working on the Hall Bath Redesign. But...better later late than never, right?

Janell I absolutely love this stecil! And its looking fantastic in the bathroom! Can't wait to see the reveal tomorrow!
I. Love. This. That's it, I'm stenciling in January. Total inspiration. You amaze me!
That is a great stencil! I like the one you used down by the stairs too. Lookin' good.

Can't wait to see. Looks beautiful so far :)
That's an amazing stencil. Do you prefer a stencil brush to a small roller? When I stenciled my daughter's room I used a small roller that I thought worked great except by the time I was done with the whole wall there was way too much paint on the rest of the stencil. I never tried a brush for a whole wall. Just wondering if you have a preference.
Good for you! That's a fun stencil, too. I am sure it will look great. Can't wait to see it!
That looks fantastic! Love the stencil. It looks like really expensive wallpaper. I've never tried stenciling a wall. Perhaps this will be my year to try!
It's looking fabulous. Can't wait to see it all done. Hugs, Marty
What a great place to try out a stencil - I've been looking and my husband is not sold on the idea! I think I'll try the kids bathroom!
WOW ! You always make your projects look so easy. I love it, cant wait to see the pictures tomorrow.
I love that stencil! Can't wait to see the finished project.
Such a great addition to this space! My kids bathroom has been in the works (or at least in my thoughts) for over a year and the progress is pretty pathetic :)
Love this update! Can't wait to see the finished project!
Lovely! I would never have thought to add anything more to that wall.
Now, you've got me thinking; I'm not sure my skills are up to wallpaper, but perhaps this technique could add a little zing to my guest room... Hmm...
I love that stencil and your blog is fantastic!I'm a new reader/follower and I'm happy to have found you.
I've never stenciled a wall before and I'm not that neat, so I don't think I'll try (although my husband would be great at it!). Can't wait to see the finished wall!
Wow...the stencil really makes a great design impact. Big and bold and can't wait to see the reveal. Yes...better late than never is also my motto. I always have several things going on at once...that way I never get tired of anything...lol
That is looking fabulous, Janell. I am going to be trying a stencil on a piece of furntiure this week and if all goes well I will attempt our bathroom wall. I will refer to your tutorial! It looks like 2011 is off to a productive start for you already!
I love how it's turning out! If I see correctly, I notice that you have textured walls. They are the norm where I live in Southern California. What do you do to prevent the paint from "bleeding"?
Thank you!
Good Morning Janell, I am SO going to have you over to my house soon! I have never stenciled anything! You inspired me - once again!

Hi Ana,
Yes, not a fan of my textured walls...but, oh well! The key I have found is to use a 'dry brush'. I dip the brush into the paint and wipe away much of it on a paper towel prior to stippling the brush over the open areas of the stencil. This goes a long way in preventing seepage under the stencil. There is also an adhesive you can apply to the back of the stencil that holds it to the wall, that would also help.

Fantastic...I still want to stencil a wall this year, I am going to do it! Thanks!

You could use this stencil in every room in your house and I don't think I would get tired of it. Looking forward to seeing the full reveal!
Janell, I like this graphic pattern and it added an element of interest to the room without being too fussy. Also, I like the idea of stenciling in a bathroom, because often times wallpaper can start to peel due to moisture from the shower etc. Fantastic job ;)!

I'm getting to your blog late today. Busy Busy.
I knew you would be at it again. Stenciling is addictive.
I plan on re-doing the stencil in our bedroom. I found a design I like better.
I love the stencil design and no explanations necessary - you are quite the busy girl! Cannot wait to see the totally finished project. (I am dying to do a stencil project myself when I get the time - I think I have to change that to when I make the time :) Happy New Year, Janell!
I love this stencil...is there anyway to get that exact one from there website? I didn't see it. Thanks for the inspiration!!
I love it! I am not sure that I would have the patience.
thepapefamily,
I'm looking into whether this design is available to purchase. Thanks for inquiring!
Janell
I'm so glad I'm not the only one who does projects in my house that way!
I heard back from Whitewall & Co., if you are interested in purchasing this stencil contact them at this email, and request a quote for the "Janell" stencil:

That stencil is darling. Can't wait to see the finish.
This is inspiring me!
just curious, i happen to love natural wood so i don't mind the dark cabinets but i'm kind of surprised that you haven't painted your cabinets to match your trim....just seems like something you'd do...curious as to your thoughts? (i have a bathroom to redo and i love the framing of the mirror and other ideas.....toying with painting the wood cabinets....)
just curious as to why you haven't painted your cabinets to match the trim. personally i love the wood but it just seems like something you'd do......i want to 'redo' my kids bath and have similar cabinets and am toying with the idea of painting but not excited about the idea of them chipping or looking poorly. (although I did paint my half bath cabinet black and it turned out great....same cabinet)
rasmar:
Your concern is why I haven't done it! I'll let these take the wear for now and down the line will refinish I'm certain!! Good question!
