Many of you asked about the fixture shown in yesterday's post, so here is a recap of how it came to be hung in front of the hall closet.
This unique Comet Pendant was selected to hang in a future design studio that was in the works. However, due to the current economic environment and so many factors that would only bore you to read, that plan was set aside and I'm moving on to other ventures! (More on that in a couple days.)
I had purchased the fixture when a great sale was running at Horchow and needed to find a place to hang it until I opened the studio. Instead of putting it back in the box after opening, I let it continue to dangle from another fixture above the piano, getting confused looks from guests!
But once plans changed I had to figure out where to install the fixture in my home. Taking a tour around the house, the only place it made sense to hang the fixture was in this small hall off the family room. It was a good spot for a few reasons. First, the hall was a completely bland and forgotten little corner. Additionally, I had been wanting to bring more color and a bit of whimsy into the adjacent family room and kitchen, and this was a good start.
To hang the fixture I used a Recessed Fixture Converter, available at Home Depot in the track lighting section. I love this product! It allows you to quickly and inexpensively hang a light fixture where a recessed light is located.
As the recessed light hole is larger than the caps on most hanging fixtures a ceiling medallion is also needed. This would not be an issue if you were to hang a ceiling mount fixture.
To bring color into the hallway I decided to paint the medallion turquoise, a color similar to the fabric covering the slipper chair in the family room. (If you think this is a bad idea, read on.)
Next the recessed fixture was removed and replaced with a junction box using the conversion kit.
The medallion was then taped into place so that it wouldn't get in the way while the light fixture was installed.
After the pendant was hung I quickly inserted one bulb and ran out to flip the breaker switch in the garage, curious to see if the light worked!
Yes! And can you believe these outrageous shadows?
Then the rest of the bulbs were inserted. This took nearly as long as hanging the fixture!
Just one problem, the turquoise medallion. It was not working for me, at all. Just too much going on, creating a distraction.
So I pulled out the ladder, again, and repainted the medallion with a color to match the ceiling. Much much better.
I love it hanging here...a wonderful inspiration for other little updates to come.
Now...back to cleaning out what lies beyond this gorgeous light in that closet! More on the status of this organizing project soon.

I absolutely love the fixture. It is something that I would never look at but yet I believe I would put it in my bathroom. I love discovering things that I wouldn't normally buy. Gorgeous and I love the shadows that it creates.

Gorgeous chandelier. I had no idea you could get a kit to convert recessed lights to hang a chandelier. So great.
The Chandelier looks great !! I love how your dog is resting and appreciating a job well done. :) Also its hard to believe you have an unorganized space in your beautiful home,I'm sure it was and oversight. ;) I cant wait to see how you put it all neatly together.
Loved this chandelier at first sight! Add a touch of whimsy to you hallway, too!

First of all, the new blog looks FABULOUS!
Second, I love that chandelier too and it did catch my eye yesterday.
Third... do you know if you can do that to just any light that's been hung? We have an overhead light in our entry that I'm dying to get rid of! But I love how you do it all yourself!
Words cannot describe how much I love that chandelier in that spot -- brilliant! When your blog opened up today I went "whoaa..", literally that's what came out of me! Love it, Janell, it's beautiful.

Light and the shadows it casts are stunning. I love. Wonderful new look on the header. It really does seem to reflect your style. Beautiful.
Love your Horcho fixture and I never knew a recessed fixture converter existed!! Oh, you've made my day - I'm off to install a pendant light above my kitchen sink!
Love the personality that it adds. I have so many recessed fixtures in my house, it's good to know I can get an adapter for and fixture I choose.
That gorgeous light made my heart speed up. I'm totally serious! I love the elegant yet whimsical feel it has! I also love your new design! YAY, it's so pretty!
Such a fantastic light, thanks for sharing how you did it.
Have a sweet day!
Absolutely stunning! I just converted a recessed light to a chandelier over a bay window seat a couple of months ago but I bought the conversion kit at Lowe's. It was not easy to install, and after a few hours,a lot of "tweaking", much hair pulled out, and a few cuss words along the way, it looks fantastic. Your kit seems so much easier. How difficult was it to install? I'll have to try the one from Home Depot next time!!
Julie,
Beyond super easy! 20 minutes tops...I've used them several times and it is always a simple project to install the converter. This particular converter is only sold at Home Depot stores, can't find it online. I LOVE this product! (can you tell?!)
Janell
That looks great! Those recessed lights provide great lighting but are kind of irritating. Good call!
obsessed with that light!! and love the new look! xo

Love, love, LOVE the light fixture! It's pretty & whimsical & funky all rolled into one. And the shadows are amazing!
Also love your hardwood flooring, trim, bookcase, and turquoise chair :-) And your pooch is adorable!
whew!! i was behind on your posts (and life, ack) -- love the light fixture!! Can't wait to see you whip your closet into shape.
and ohmygosh...your new blog design is fab!!!!
I've got the same fixture and haven't figured out where to hang it, your recess converter idea rocks and now has allowed me numerous places to hang it! Thanks!
Karlie,
I'm so glad! Isn't the fixture great?
It always gets wonderful comments when someone comes into my home for the first time. Good luck deciding where to hang yours! Janell
I LOVE that light fixture, Janell! It creates a nice conversation piece in your hallway and does add that perfect touch of whimsy. Great tip on the recessed fixture converter. I didn't even know they made those. Your soft blue chair has got to be one of the prettiest chairs...that color of your fabric is so luxurious looking.
Janell, I have had to use that same converter for over my sink! As long as the light fixture is not to heavy it works great!!! Yours looks fantastic and good call on the turquoise :)
Great point Sherry, thanks for bringing this issue up. There is a 25 lb limit for the fixture that is to be hung! Janell
This is fabulous! It's amazing how a light fixture change change the entire feel of a space. Love the new blog redesign too!
J, thanks for your sweet comment. I really appreciate your thinking of me.
I see you are as busy as ever! That chandelier/light fixture is the bomb! I love it there. You are starting 2011 off right, I see!
Thanks and love, donna
Great post, I always wondered how to convert our bathroom one, I so need a chandelier above the tub
I've always been obsessed with that light. Even though its pricey I think it will have to be mine!
Your blog looks GREAT
Oh my goodness I LOVE that light fixture!!!!!
Paula
Love, love, love your new blog look! So beautiful, Janell! The light is just magical!
This is fantastic! Perfect timing too. I was just getting ready to ask the Hubs how I could convert the light over our kitchen sink. Love the fixture it's so gorgeous.
P.S. We are so much the same, I love that you hung a new fixture instead of tackling the closet for right now!
Love that chandelier!!! I just might have to get that for my hallway. I recently re-did my powder room from pink wall paper to gray paint with silver fictures and new white farm sink and toto dual flush toilet. To get some cool stuff in there i put in a chandelier. It had recessed lighting in there. Well it took me 6 hours to install. The problem was that the recess lighting was 100% compatible with the converter so i had to make my own holes etc. But after 6 hard hours of work i looks wonderful and i love it. I think the converters are wonderful as long as the recess lighting you have is standard. I have a home from 1920 where i find interesting things all the time. :)
Interesting point!! Wow, what a lot of work, glad the outcome was well worth it! Janell
Do you think it would be difficult to make a variation of that chandelier? Love it, but can't afford it.
The chandelier is fantastic! I can't believe I missed it in the earlier closet post... I think I was too busy salivating over the idea of the organization project, ha ha!
I LOVE your wall paint in the hall. What color is that!?
Absolutely stunning. Seriously, this light fixture has me completely mesmerized. And the fact that your wall/trim/floor colours are exactly the same as mine, is cool... because I had no idea how to work with our wall colour!! Hubby and I agreed on it, but I didn[t know how to decorate around it. Now I KNOW that robins egg blue accents WILL work... perfectly!
I savour, lead to I found exactly what I used to be taking a look for. You have ended my 4 day lengthy hunt! God Bless you man. Have a nice day. Bye

Do you happen to recall who the manufacturer was for this light? This pendant was on my "must haves" list and then it was mysteriously discontinued a couple of years ago. Horchow and Neiman Marcus will not disclose where the lamp came from and I am hoping an owner might be able to help! :)
