I was feeling all great about my progress on cleaning out and organizing a messy hall closet when I decided to take a little break to catch up with a couple blogs. What I stumbled across made me sit back and have a little laugh at my efforts. Shelley from House of Smiths has a pantry clean up that is inspiring, truly an organizational job that is done with style! Lining the walls behind the shelves with pretty vinyl paper makes this pantry a thing of beauty. Check out Shelley's post to see the transformation here.
If any of you are still with me, here is a run down of what happened during my clean up!
Not too bad. I approached this project by getting two large boxes to fill with any items worth donating, garbage bags for anything that should have been tossed a while ago, wicker baskets for storage and a lot of ziploc bags.
This pile of random items is what was in front of the bins, the actual content hidden away inside the bins were emptied and sorted through later! Where did that lamp shade come from? This closet is deep and I was amazed at the amount of stuff our family had managed to tuck away, back in its recesses, over the last couple of years.
The game shelf is what surprised me! How is it possible we have that many games?
They were sorted through, with the ones used frequently put back on the shelf and the others donated to Goodwill.
What a mess! Bags of seasonal decor, acrylic paint, ribbon, wrapping paper and lots and lots of odds and ends.
Sort, toss, clean, pack up and organize into piles of similar items.
Then I tackled the bins.
Organize, organize, organize.
Finally, the post-its used for identifying the bin contents while sorting were replaced with pretty labels, and this project was done.

It can't begin to compare with Shelley's pantry, but I'm just happy to be able to find what I need. Here's to it staying this way...for a while.

It always feels good to have everything in the house organized. Love the wallpaper in Shelly's closet, nice touch.
Oh, you must feel so good! There is truly nothing better than a clean, organized closet. And those pictures from House of Smith? AMAZING! Thanks so much for sharing, gonna have to get to work!
WOW! What a great job you did!!!
I love that feeling when you've just organized something! I end up admiring my work afterwards for like 30 minutes, just standing there looking at how pretty it is :)
I want to go out right now, buy those shoe storage boxes and pretty labels, and get crack-a-lackin on my craft/junk/you name it room. Thanks for inspiring me!
I need bins...like ASAP!

Looks great. Job well done. Loving the little bins for ribbon, etc. I seem to have an explosion of ribbon in my Mom Cave at the moment. Need to have new homes for everything. Once again, thanks for the inspiration! liz
Just a touch of wallpaper in your closet and you've got a magazine worthy closet! Looks great! (BTW, I've done several posts on wallpapering the inside of a closet...it is happiness just for the homeowner!)
Okay, I don't WANT to do this project, but I'm feeling a little more inspired after seeing your before and after. There's something so refreshing about an organized space, isn't there?
I can't believe how many games were able to fit on that shelf!! I love an organized closet, good job Janell.
Not only organized, but pretty! Love the addition of pretty paper.
Amazing!
I can tell it was a lot of work though!
Your closet looks great! I can't believe how much stuff you got rid of - what a way to start the new year. :)
Thanks for the closet-cleaning-out inspiration!

What a difference! I love your organized closet!!
WOW! It looks amazing! Can I ask how long it took you to do all this? A project that big looks intimidating.
oh janell, you inspire me! i need to do this to my pantry, to make room for some serving pieces that i have no room for currently. maybe next weekend...
GREAT job - looks GORG
Mary,
3 days, an hour or so each day. Not too bad...and the best part? FREE, I had everything I needed to get the job done on hand!
Janell
Great job Janell,
I know the feeling when everything is in its proper place and easy access.
I love seeing organization posts! You must feel so good right now! I just did my bedroom closet and I love being in there! Enjoy!
SO motivating...it looks fabulous! I love the little labels, where did you find them?
You must love having it all organized again. It makes you feel like you can breath easier. Nice job. That's the only good thing about January (it's below zero here today with the wind chill). It's a good month to organize.
Looks wonderful, I bet it feels great too.
... I am noodling on ideas & will be in touch later today!!
Janell, love Shelley's pantry, it's hard to top that one. None of my closets look remotely like that.
Good job on cleaning the closet & organizing. I'm doing some of that myself & now have about 5 bags of clothes & shoes to donate. Feels good!
Nicely done! I just re-organized our "office/playroom" closet and bookshelves. Felt good to go through all the stuff. Where did you get those labels? Are they labels?
Phew! I'm exhausted just reading that! Much improved!
Kelly
Labels: Martha Stewart found at Michaels last fall, think they are still in stock. Best part: sticky backs!
Janell
Oh, I looove me some organizational skills. I did something similar with labels on clear plastic bins for our hall closet. I got a little crazy with the label making though...

looks fabulous! this is one of those projects that makes you feel good afterwards - now to keep it that way!!! :)
Dang....I knew better than to come here....it is a snow day here in Atlanta and I should get my butt in there and clean out my closet...but I am hanging out on the computer instead :)
You must feel so good to have that project crossed off your list! Love the labels too!
What a great reorg! And I LOVE that chandelier. Simply beautiful!
Yours looks great! I love your light fixture, very cool!
Ok, now you have inspired me to finish my closet! I started on Friday and have piles everywhere still. I got distracted and overwhelmed and found something more fun to do. I know I'll be happy with my end result so back to it today. Your closet looks great. I love that paper in Shelley's panty - nice touch!
awesome!!! and I have to say, that light fixture is pretty amazing too!
Wow that is impressive! Will you come to Boston and tackle my closets too???
Love it!
awesome job! looks like you were able to donate a bunch and your closet has room to breathe! love all the labels and bins!!
Aah...organization always feels so good!
I think you did a great job on your closet...I don't think Shelley's pantry dimishes that...it's hard to top a pantry like that. ;-)
Shelley's pantry is pretty exceptional! But your transformation looks great - so organized and your labels are so cute! I'd love to just have a pantry or closet that I could store stuff in - I'm in serious need of storage space!!
Well done! Don't you like keeping the door open and seeing it as you walk by! That is always my favorite part. Looks great and I like those labels. Haven't seen them before.
Thank you for your VERY kind words, you're so sweet.
Wow! Now THATS a closet that CAN!
You've really packed that thing full of all the "must haves" and it still looks fabulous. Nice work!
I also love those labels, and sticky backs?...bonus!
That was a BIG undertaking. Nice work Janell! I also have to say that the chandelier is Ah-MAZING! Such a beautiful organized space, now :)

Yours is equally as impressive! I profiled House of Smiths' pantry yesterday on my blog, so obviously I love it, too. But I would be happy to have a closet as organized as yours in my home, as well. :)
Love it! I might need to get those stickers my closets are in need.
I'm quite jealous, and feeling very lazy...
Just gorgeous!
Ya mean I shouldn't just close the door?
You have shamed me into organizing my pantry!
I absolutely love your home & your sense of style! I enjoy reading your blog.
I don't know Janell...your closet looks pretty darn good to me!
Your closet turned out great janell! Do you mins coming over and doing mine?! Shelley's closet is just too darn nice! I need to go back to mine. I see that she sells labels... That has certainly givewn me an idea!
The weather has been crazy here! Lots of snow and ice amd no school! How are things coming along on yor end?!
So I misspelled a few words! Blame it on the touch screen:-)
Fabulous! Where did you get the labels and the pen/marker? I could use some like that!
Great job! Doesn't it feel great to get things in order? Now I'm off to do my own!
Looks good Janell! I like your labels (and sticky back to boot). Of course I'm also loving Shelley's pretty paper...
Can I just tell you that every time I open my pantry I think about Shelley's?! Seriously . . . I am a follower of her blog and I cannot get over that space and how beautiful she made it. That woman is giving me a complex! ;-) You did such a great job here though. You make me want to go downstairs and start my entry closet - which is overflowing with games! Awesome job and thanks for the inspiration!
oh, this was like a therapy session for me!
i LOVE to clean and organize, and get even more excited by LABELED and MATCHING containers.
this is total organizing porn.
Your closet looks so great now! And look at how much EXTRA room you have in there! Who's the competitive one in the family?? :)
* Mom always said "jealousy" was bad... unhealthy... a waste of time, and it was better to "learn" from it...
Welllllll, Janell, I AM "kinda sorta" jealous right now (!)... BUUUUUT, am also "HEALTHILY (sp?)ENCOURAGED" that a project like this CAN be done, and ever-so-nicely, if one is "game" to "attack"!!!
SOOOO, thanks to BOTH of you for providing the inspiration to "pull a Nike", and "JUST DO IT"!!!
Warmest thanks,
Linda in AZ *

GREAT job :)
Yeah! GREAT Job! And thanks for sharing Shelley's too. I could look at these kinds of posts all day long!
It looks great, Janell. I love how you went shelf by shelf. A lot of the time I'll get overwhelemed because I want to do it all at once! The amount of games we acquired when my brother and I were little always shocks me! Looks fabulous (:
Yes, I had originally intended to pull it all out at once, but starting on the lower shelf it quickly became clear that there was way too much stuff hiding in there to make that manageable. This really did help, I could do a shelf, and then walk away and return when I was up for it...without having a gigantic mess for days!
Have a great one Michaela! Janell
Can you come to my house and organize my closets, please?! ;-) You did a great job organizing yours. Still loving that light fixture!
My pulse just sped up reading this and seeing the glorious after pics!!!! what a great closet space...and the bins are perfect for all the craft stuff. I'm sure you are feeling so fine right now with this new organization!
Yippee!!! Looks fabulous and I bet you feel great.
xo,
cristin
What a difference. I love a good cleaning/organizing project! Thanks for sharing :)

Wow, that quatrefoil paper is gorgeous! I have some serious pantry-envy now.
And your hall closet looks wonderful -- love that you now have extra space for future projects.
Ooohhh I love your blog and love this post...quick question..where can I get those pretty labels?
Thanks!!
Great job! And of course I have to say at is a gorgeous light!
It must make you so happy to open this closet now- everything has a place and its all neatly organized. I LOVE it!
I'm looking for inspiration, but your closet looks better than mine even at it's worst! I'm in big trouble! But you did give me some great ideas! Thanks!
