Hall Closet: Sparkling Clean & Oh So Wonderfully Organized!

I was feeling all great about my progress on cleaning out and organizing a messy hall closet when I decided to take a little break to catch up with a couple blogs. What I stumbled across made me sit back and have a little laugh at my efforts. Shelley from House of Smiths has a pantry clean up that is inspiring, truly an organizational job that is done with style! Lining the walls behind the shelves with pretty vinyl paper makes this pantry a thing of beauty. Check out Shelley's post to see the transformation here.

If any of you are still with me, here is a run down of what happened during my clean up!

Not too bad. I approached this project by getting two large boxes to fill with any items worth donating, garbage bags for anything that should have been tossed a while ago, wicker baskets for storage and a lot of ziploc bags.

This pile of random items is what was in front of the bins, the actual content hidden away inside the bins were emptied and sorted through later! Where did that lamp shade come from? This closet is deep and I was amazed at the amount of stuff our family had managed to tuck away, back in its recesses, over the last couple of years.

The game shelf is what surprised me! How is it possible we have that many games?

They were sorted through, with the ones used frequently put back on the shelf and the others donated to Goodwill.

What a mess! Bags of seasonal decor, acrylic paint, ribbon, wrapping paper and lots and lots of odds and ends.

Sort, toss, clean, pack up and organize into piles of similar items.

Then I tackled the bins.

Organize, organize, organize.

Finally, the post-its used for identifying the bin contents while sorting were replaced with pretty labels, and this project was done.

It can't begin to compare with Shelley's pantry, but I'm just happy to be able to find what I need. Here's to it staying this way...for a while.

Oh, you must feel so good! There is truly nothing better than a clean, organized closet. And those pictures from House of Smith? AMAZING! Thanks so much for sharing, gonna have to get to work!

WOW! What a great job you did!!!

I love that feeling when you've just organized something! I end up admiring my work afterwards for like 30 minutes, just standing there looking at how pretty it is :)

I want to go out right now, buy those shoe storage boxes and pretty labels, and get crack-a-lackin on my craft/junk/you name it room. Thanks for inspiring me!

Looks great. Job well done. Loving the little bins for ribbon, etc. I seem to have an explosion of ribbon in my Mom Cave at the moment. Need to have new homes for everything. Once again, thanks for the inspiration! liz

Just a touch of wallpaper in your closet and you've got a magazine worthy closet! Looks great! (BTW, I've done several posts on wallpapering the inside of a closet...it is happiness just for the homeowner!)

Okay, I don't WANT to do this project, but I'm feeling a little more inspired after seeing your before and after. There's something so refreshing about an organized space, isn't there?

You must love having it all organized again. It makes you feel like you can breath easier. Nice job. That's the only good thing about January (it's below zero here today with the wind chill). It's a good month to organize.

Janell, love Shelley's pantry, it's hard to top that one. None of my closets look remotely like that.

Good job on cleaning the closet & organizing. I'm doing some of that myself & now have about 5 bags of clothes & shoes to donate. Feels good!

Nicely done! I just re-organized our "office/playroom" closet and bookshelves. Felt good to go through all the stuff. Where did you get those labels? Are they labels?

Shelley's pantry is pretty exceptional! But your transformation looks great - so organized and your labels are so cute! I'd love to just have a pantry or closet that I could store stuff in - I'm in serious need of storage space!!

That woman is giving me a complex! ;-) You did such a great job here though. You make me want to go downstairs and start my entry closet - which is overflowing with games! Awesome job and thanks for the inspiration!

* Mom always said "jealousy" was bad... unhealthy... a waste of time, and it was better to "learn" from it...

Welllllll, Janell, I AM "kinda sorta" jealous right now (!)... BUUUUUT, am also "HEALTHILY (sp?)ENCOURAGED" that a project like this CAN be done, and ever-so-nicely, if one is "game" to "attack"!!!

SOOOO, thanks to BOTH of you for providing the inspiration to "pull a Nike", and "JUST DO IT"!!!

Warmest thanks,

It looks great, Janell. I love how you went shelf by shelf. A lot of the time I'll get overwhelemed because I want to do it all at once! The amount of games we acquired when my brother and I were little always shocks me! Looks fabulous (:

Janell @ Isabella and Max said...

Yes, I had originally intended to pull it all out at once, but starting on the lower shelf it quickly became clear that there was way too much stuff hiding in there to make that manageable. This really did help, I could do a shelf, and then walk away and return when I was up for it...without having a gigantic mess for days!

Have a great one Michaela! Janell
