Tree Traditions

Each year we decorate our tree the day after Thanksgiving. One of my favorite parts of the tradition is unwrapping ornaments which have been stored during the year...each one seems to have a memory attached to it. One special ornament is a vintage tree topper that my grandmother placed on her holiday tree. A sale tag still on the box, marked an extravagant 68 cents, reminds me that she knew how to find a deal!

Before I could place the ornament on the top of the tree this year, however, Max had cut out a star, attached a ribbon to it and was adamant it be placed at the top of the tree instead. And that is what we did. (I placed the tree topper on today simply to get this picture, though I think it will be coming down before he gets home from school!) Perhaps I can find someplace else to set the ornament this season...

I love how you have an ornament from your Grandmother- and what a cool one it is! We decorate our tree the day after Thanksgiving too, but this year, with a baby hanging around, it took an extra long time! Have a great weekend Janell:)

I love family traditions. We have a toy that was my great grandfathers that my Dad pulls out each Christmas. And perhaps 68 cents was a splurge back then? Looks great. Cannot wait to be able to put up our tree...it is killing me this year having to wait for the move. (Packers arrive Monday.)

Janell, that is so sweet and that is what christmas decorating is all about to me. the sweet sweet memories. Trust me when Max is a man you will take that little star out of the box of ornaments and cry. I cry every year when I decorate my tree with the plastic orange juice lid sprayed red with macaroni and glitter, the styrofoam rectangle with gold sequins, baby shoes, first pair of glasses, the list goes on and on.

I did a post about our ornament tradition that I still have with my 3 sons. You can read it here if you have time....

I think Grandmas tree topper would look amazing in a candleholer!!! So pretty and sparkly,
Merry Christmas,

I love that ornament, so rich in history and it looks great. Will Max agree to keep the star and ornament together as you've shown in the picture? Maybe he will if you remind him of Santa!Lovely tradition.

It looks like a NEW tradition of your decorating has started.
Let us know what place of honor will be given to Grandmother's tree topper. I'm sure you'll find a special place for it.

I love Christmas and all the memories the season unfolds year after year of unpacking little treasures. My girl made a tree topper for us this year as well and the control freak in me was so ok with it. (Surprised myself!) I attached hers to a straw and stuck it in the top.
Enjoy the Saeson!

Would'nt be nice to share some ornaments with your kids that has sentimental value?

Pretty tree topper that's reminds me most of the ornaments back in Germany when we used to lived there.

Have a nice weekend Janell!

That's great! We have a similar tradition and love telling the stories of our ornaments. We pulled out a very large angel {about 10 inches} with a picture of riley on it made from preschool. Her response, "Oh, mom, every tree should have a picture of me, right?" {oh dear!}

So special to have that for your tree....and someday your daughter (or son) will hang it on theirs!

happy weekend, janell!

I'm with Max. The most humble of decorations belong at the very top. The things we make and will treasure forever. i love his star! (I made one for my tree too).

What a gorgeous tree topper! Our tree is topperless because I just haven't found the "perfect" one. If only I could find one of these!! = )

What about putting the star on the top of the ornament? Or, perhaps just the star.

What a beautiful tree topper, but I can totally understand giving into a hand-made ornament crafted by your son. We have several old ornaments that were my husband's granmother's. I now place them in a crystal bowl as a display on our dining room table. Very pretty and festive.

Oh, I still remember that adorable school picture of him! OF COURSE, the star belongs in the very top. Good for him! (Although, I must say that the vintage tree topper from your Grandma is gorgeous).

Happy weekend to you.

I think that is so sweet that Max wanted his handmade start at the top! Maybe you could talk Max into keeping his star along with your grandmother's tree topper. Both of them work! How special to have that lovely tree topper with wonderful memories. We always take forever to get our ornaments on the tree. We have to stop and tell storeis about each one. So much fun! Have a great weekend, Janell!

I love it! When I was in kindergarten we made an angel out of paper plates glitter and crayons! It was the tree topper for the next 15 years! LOL I am sure in the beginning it was at my insistence but soon it became a Christmas tradition. My parents didn't know what to do with the tree when I moved out! ;)

So sweet! That's one of my favorite parts of Christmas... pulling out the decor that you haven't seen in a year and remembering all of the fun memories! :)

Have a great weekend!

My parents have the exact same topper! Bring back memories...love Max's edition too. I have my son's black snowman ornaments he painted when he was 3, yes, black.

what a gorgeous tree topper! my grandmother had one quite similar but it got broken long ago. You definitely need to keep the star up there - these moments are so important to kids and it's something he'll remember for a long time :)

beautiful!
The inflation calculator determines that if that ornament was bought in december 1970, what back then cost 68c would today cost $5.00, still not a bad price!

Awww...as much as I love your grandmas tree topper...I love that little construction paper star, cut out with hands that will soon be much bigger, more!

My absolute most cherished ornaments are the faded and fragile construction paper ones.

That is so sweet ;) The vintage topper is really great, but the star is priceless.

We have a very similar topper on our tree this year. It was on my husband's tree growing up. Last year I had my star, this year we are using his. It looks great and so does yours! Of course I don't have a Max to make me a star. Love that.

Growing up, we always decorated our tree the day after Thanksgiving as well. Then while we lived in Massachusetts we followed my husband's family tradition of going up to cut down a fresh Christmas tree the first week in December. Although I enjoyed doing that, I always missed doing the tree the Friday after Thanksgiving...so when we moved back to Utah this year, I made sure we got our tree and decorated it that Friday. (Old traditions die hard.)

We also had a star just like that one growing up (my parents still have it). I remember always thinking it was so pretty. But, nothing is ever as pretty as things made by your children with pride. ;-) Good on you Mom for leaving Max's star on top of the tree.
