{most days: the nice me}
Good grief. Doesn't everyone know 49 is the new 29?
{today: the annoyed me}

{and...I don't look bad for 49, if I say so myself}
What is your take on the topic?
Does advancing age get in the way of opportunities,
particularly for women?
particularly for women?
And thanks for letting me rant.
Please come back tomorrow, when the nice me will have returned...
I have begun work on a group of DIY projects which will make great little gifts for the upcoming holidays, and look forward to sharing them with you!

Gee, I feel the annoyed Rene coming on. Isn't there such thing as age discrimination? Without knowing the specifics of your situation, I can only say that whatever your age Janell, you are one of the most inspiring bloggers around.
Grrr.
-Rene
You look WONDERFUL for you age! I hope "the next step" just got lost in the mail :)

Lilac and Grey
First of all you do NOT look 49. Yes, I do feel like age discrimination still roars its ugly head, especially for women.
No, not lost in the mail. I followed up twice, the last time actually speaking to the person...who said oh, let me send it right over, and confirmed my email. Then nothing. I would make sure it wasn't a mistake before posting this!
And really, the point of this post is to make people aware or think about the idea that there shouldn't be limitations, particularly for women, as we get older. We have more to offer than we ever did in our youth and I hope the time has come, or is coming, in our society, when this can be embraced.
Janell
YOU LOOK AMAZING!!!! Forget them!
Unbelievable! And yet it's not. Yes, I do fear sometimes it's one step ahead and two steps back. For women, unfortunately, I do think advancing age is a detriment. Which is absolutely ridiculous. I second Rene: you're one of the most inspiring bloggers around. And I second Cara. You look amazing! Here's to another BETTER opportunity around the corner.
Oh wow. First of all, I'm floored that you're 49. Unbelievable!
Second, RIDICULOUS!!! They are definitely passing up a gem if they stop bec. of age.
I unfortunately do believe in some cases age does stop opportunities for us--as dumb as it is. But you know, I also think we stop ourselves sometimes. (Not in your case. . .) But, I do think some women decide to act old and just give up. I hope I don't get to that point. I do believe that 49 is the new 29 so with that being said, YOU GO GIRL :)
You look amazing..and not for YOUR age...for ANY age! You even could have lied, but you didn't b/c you shouldn't have to! Now I am annoyed too! Age = experience! Isn't that the best?!
Yep. Sort of one of my pet peeves - both when women choose to stop themselves because of age and when others try to stop them. You can either do it, or you can't. Period. From what I've seen being accomplished by women in their 40's, 50's, 60's and, yes, 70's these days age has absolutely nothing to do with it!
I would say, in this case, if that really is their issue you should be glad it didn't work out. Probably not who you want to be working with. You're talented and have other opportunities that have come your way (and will continue to), so their loss.
You look great, by the way! :-)
I am 29 and you make me so look forward to 49! You are fantastic inspiration in many ways!
Yes Emily, that is another reason for this post! Don't give up ladies, there is always potential for an exciting and enriching future at any age!! And I really believe that, I have never been happier or have felt more energized and content about my life than I do now, approaching 50! It is really wonderful...
Janell
It's their loss, plain and simple. Unfortunately, I agree that in certain areas a woman's age is a huge negative factor - even if they're still gorgeous and would offer so much more in terms of experience and knowledge (that would be your case!).
I agree with another comment - it's good that the deal didn't go through. That's not the kind of people you want to work for. You have too much going on and there will be other great opportunities for you - so it's good that you didn't get tied up with the wrong sort of people so that you would miss another, better opportunity.
wait...49? Who...you? Seriously?
In all seriousness. You have an amazing family, wonderful blog & a host of friends and extended family member here in blogland...so essentially its their lost if your age was the determining factor.
Weve all been there. I wont get into how many deals were given to the other guy because I was Black. People dont like using the Black bomb, but truth is truth.
I support Janell at 49, 29...freakin 109! She is my friend. Yes I used the F* bomb...friend.
Mr. Goodwill Hunting
Hey, I'm 49 and I think I look better than I ever have....I'm a rockin', sexy grandma! LOL. You look great, too! I sincerely hope we aren't limited by our advancing age, but there will always be those who place a great deal of value on those numbers. I agree that 49 today isn't the 49 of even 20 years ago. So, I'm determined to be my best self and let my attitude and actions reflect the youth (with some experience) that I feel on the inside!
First of all, that's not a legal question to ask on a job interview....you could probably call them on that. But at the same time, I'm sure they are probably trying to appeal to that younger demographic. I completely changed careers, went back to school and all that at 47yrs old. Now I'm pushing 60, blogging with the babies out there who are calling the things I grew up with "vintage"! Oh, my! It's difficult to compete as we age, but we can't let it stop us from pursuing our dreams. We're going to get old anyway, so we might as well be doing what we love. Thumbs down to any employer who makes age an issue!
Janell,
Wow, it's such a shame to think that some business is handled this way. I had this happen on the other end, people thought I was too young for some of the opportunities that came my way. Either way it's crummy.
It's most certainly their loss, you are WAY too talented to not be picked up again by someone even better who will treat you the way you deserve-with respect! You have worked really hard to achieve your success and the right opportunity will come. Stay true to your awesome self and keep on blogging, we love you and think you hung the moon!
*Amy
You 49? No way! I want to see your birth certificate :) You look amazing!!!
I do think if age was an issue for this company it was most likely a blessing it didn't work out. It means something better and bigger is out there for you!
Don't let it get you down. Have your hubby take you out for dinner with a glass of wine and celebrate how fabulous you are!
XO
Kristin
Janell, this is sad but true! I think there is definitely age discrimination, and mainly it is towards women! The perception of most seems to be that men get wiser and more distinguished as they age and women just get old! Makes me so mad - you and I are the same age and I feel more vibrant and confident now than I did certainly in my 20's and even in my 30's. Do not let this get you down - you are look fantastic and have some incredible momentum going. Enjoy it!!
PK and Mr Goodwill Hunting, you guys wrote my comment!
Janell, when you told me your age in New York, my first thought was: "WOW, I'm a total slacker"!!! You difinetly give us younger women a run for our money! Your extremely talented, BEAUTIFUL, and ambitious. You have done so much and you keep me and I'm sure many others motivated.
49 is the new 29? I hope not. From where I'm standing I can see 29 down the street and it's not that interesting to me! 50.....Now that's what I'm anticipating! Oprah made 50 look so glamorous when she celebrated her birthday and ever since then I've been excited about getting to that point! And now that I've met you and gotten to know you through your blog and our other conversations, you make that age look even more fabulous!
Like others have said, it's their loss! You have something better in your future anyway;-)
you ARE kidding us???? You aren't 49??????? Are you????? *ADMIRATION*......well you know, they are just not smart enough...."we"(hum, almost 41;)) just make wiser dissisions....we don't bounce up and down(I'm an exception to MANY rules;)), and we CAN oversee more.....well....they will eat their heart out!!!! At least they should!!!!
What's age????
*high five*
A few things....
49 IS young. And you don't even look close to 49.
Women accomplish so much more in such later years nowadays. I can't believe that 49 would be a negative?!
Lastly, I think we all know which production company this is...
You rock Janell. So glad you I've gotten the opportunity to get to know you.
You seem to have struck a cord with people on this post. Being in my 40's I understand what you are saying. If you say you are going to do something, just do it.
First of all it is was not legal for them to ask your age...period. In the future you shouldn't answer that question. Second, I think it takes until forty to just get started. Third, I would have guessed you were 39...not 49. Any job interview should be based on your skill, not your age. So wrong.
I've been thinking about this, and all the comments above:
First: Is there any, very slight, chance that maybe it's NOT your age that is keeping them from contacting you? Could there be another factor? I hate to say it, but maybe they found someone else? Your angst could all be for naught!
Second: I (sort of) disagree with most of the comments, that age discrimination is everywhere. I am a few years...twelve to be exact....older than you, and I will say that age has given me opportunities I would NEVER have had if I were younger!
I am a much more self confident person and that comes across.
A note to L.Duncan: YES, 50 is fabulous! Believe me, it only gets better and better!
Demographics, demographics, demographics....the worst of this kind of thing is seen in television and the audience the networks covet. Networks will willingly cater to younger viewers even if they know that people who have been loyal to their network for decades will walk away as a result of being ignored.
You look amazing, and YES, 49 is the new 25!!!
xoxo Laura
I too would have never guessed your age! You are fabulous!!
You look fabulous - and you could have knocked 15 years off your age and I would have believed you.
Email the production company with a link to this post! At the very least, after reading your post and our comments, it may inspire them to be a bit more conscientious in their hiring practices and methods.
Rediculous!! They should be a shame that this would be a factor in this day and age. You look aewsome and celebrate your style, spirit, and age!! Mean people suck!
Smiles!
Maureen

It's time for people to be aware that with age comes wisdom.
Wait one darn second!!! You are not 49!!!? This can't be! I thought you were my age! 36! Sweetheart, you are a stunning woman, and do not fret, I'm sure they are just bogged down with things, and they are moving slower than normal. Keep your pretty chin up!
What?? Why were you asked your age in the first place? I think that is stupid:( You are gorgeous & super talented!
Amy R.
I have to say I'm shocked that you are 49 ! WOW ! You look amazing, and shame on them to pass up on such talent because of age. I say their loss.
Dont let that get you down, keep smiling and decorating !
Your Fabulous !
Stella
Wannabe...no, I followed up. I have lived enough years to know when I'm being lied to.
Wonderfully, it doesn't really matter! The point I really want to make is that we should celebrate women of all ages and embrace our power to inspire and live great lives!!
Janell
Well, I'll try this again if I can get my fingers on the right keys. lol You look fantastic, and such a shame that age should ever be an issue. Why pass up fantastic talent because of age. You are a beautiful lady. Hugs, Marty
First of all, I cannot believe you're 49! Seriously, if I look half as good as you do when I'm 49 I will be SOOOO happy! Second, sounds like age discrimination - no way they can say you're NOT qualified for the job. Sucks! But, knowing the little I know of you, you won't let this stop you. In fact, one day you'll be using this exact example to your advantage - to make your point!! YOu go girl!!! There is nothing stopping you....
Janell you hit a sore subject for this gal. I never..ever had trouble being offered a job in all my working life until recently. I've fought it ever since I turned 50. It's like a have a tattoo on my forehead, "old & un-hirable". What made me very sad was a trip to Target yesterday. There are several more mature women that have worked as cashiers for several years now @ that location. One shared with me that there were many highly educated career woman working there but because of their age, they no longer could find good jobs. Jobs they were trained to do. This gal, also shared that she is 74. I left sad, very sad; that'll be me. These ladies likely work for $7. - $9./per hr. Texas min. wage.
What's shocking is this may of happened to you & in your 40's. I'm all of us agree, that was one huge, asinine mistake by that Production Co. You my friend are amazing, inside & out.
The story of the very educated women at Target makes me sad as well, I had the nicest women check me out last week and I just stood there wondering what her story was. I do hope there is room for change.
Janell
As someone who recently turned 50, let me agree that you look fabulous! But even if you didn't look great for 49, you are still valuable and have much to offer! It's a sad fact that it happens ~~ their loss for sure!
Never in a million years would I have guessed your age! You look fabulous!
I watched part of the CMA awards last night and it was so refreshing seeing women of all ages honored, celebrated and being nominated for awards. I believe they're the only entertainment industry where a female can have a long career and fans remain loyal. When will the rest of the entertainment industries catch on?
All I can say is when I read that you were 49 I said out loud SHUT UP! You look so great and I think age is just a number because reading your blog for long as I have I know you're young at heart. There are women who are in their 20's and 30's that act like old ladies. I went back to school 3 years ago to get my interior design degree and was never so aware how old I was, I was 37 at the time and I just turned 40. I think my advantage to the younger girls have been that my sole focus is interior design there's no question at all that this is what I want to do, and I'm more comfortable with who I am and I've been passionate about design for 30 years which shows in my work. I think I'm a better designer because of it but you're right I still think there is age discrimination which is unfortunate, especially in your case and if age was a deciding factor its totally their loss because you are beyond talented!
What a crock! Your age is an ASSET to you...you've had more years than a younger woman to perfect your skills...which is why they wanted you in the first place! This is so frustrating to hear:( Keep your chin up. You're amazing and if they cant look past an age issue, they dont deserve you!
Nice you...Mean you...You are BOTH gorgeous!
And WISE!!!
HI, Janell, what a shame that this production company handled things like that. You're intuition is probably right on in this case. I know how you feel, I'm over 50 myself (about to celebrate another b'day in Dec.) & don't look forward to stacking more numbers up, but that is the way it is.
I think aging has it's benefits, that wisdom with age thing certainly is true. But, I can see and feel sometimes that my age is looked down upon by younger women. I probably even did it myself when I was younger & looked at older women as past their prime. It's certainly not the case, but I think younger folks do it without realizing it, since they are not here yet. But, still we do have so much more to offer with experience and wisdom and there's a lot to be said for that. I'm so happy to be where I am at my age too, doing something that I love to do. I don't have any desire to climb a ladder anymore, but just enjoy life as it is.
Don't let it get you down! You're beautiful, talented, and smart & many more opportunities will come your way, so don't doubt that for a minute!
No, you don't look good "for your age". You look great...PERIOD. I say to heck with them. Yes, the world tries to limit opportunities for women based on their age, but that's when smart women make their own opportunities. Show them you don't need them. Get a video camera and make your own "t.v." series. Put it on YouTube, Vimeo, and everywhere else. Turn this blog into the powerhouse of interior decorating and design info that it can be. Be your own production company. Don't wait for opportunities to come knocking. Make your own opportunities. This could be your biggest D.I.Y. challenge yet.
I really hope it has nothing to do with your age. You need to confront this issue.
By the way you look awesome! Age doesn't matter!
This is probably why so many women are starting their own businesses and doing their own thing. If other people aren't going to open doors for us in business any more, we'll just have to open them ourselves.
Thank goodness for the Internet. I figure I can keep blogging until I'm 100 and no one can stop me... :-)
Okay, seriously, ditto everyone else (really? 49?). I myself have struggled with my age more since blogging then ever before - I see all you young (see, I put you in that category) and very talented women and wonder what am I doing? (I am 54). Why do we do that? It is just a number, right? By the way, one of my most energetic friends - I am not kidding you, is 94 years old! She runs circles around me some days! Calls me up and asks, can I get you anything I'm going up to Trader Joe's! I hope it ends up that it had nothing to do with your age, but it is definitely their loss. Thank you for the encouragement that I gained from your post today!
You look great and you don't look 49!
Julie: Exactly! Women can create their own futures, and Kristi, yes! Every time I encounter a roadblock I just figure out a way around it and how I can move forward regardless of other doors closing!
Janell
Didn't anyone tell you that 49 is the new 19? Which, of course, makes 39 the new 9 and 29 the new embryo. YAY!
You're one hot mama, don't worry about it. Sometimes people are jusy nosey.
That is SO their loss!!! How ridiculous is it that they even asked you your age? Do they not take into account how fabulous you are, the popularity of your blog and designs, how much you inspire others? And forget about the number, you are gorgeous for ANY age. I say again - THEIR LOSS!
I agree with what others have said: this will simply leave you open for, or allow you to make for yourself, even better opportunities. Also, concerning aging, I want to post the following thought I first read a while back by another blogger (The Adventures of Elizabeth at elizabethhousestlouis.blogspot.com). She talked about how we admire age in some things like furniture (to the point where we purposely age and antique things), yet we don't appreciate it in a human being. This really spoke to me. Really, why is it that we don't welcome, relish even, the fine lines and gray hair that bespeak all of the things that age bestows upon a person, namely wisdom, experience, perspective? Sigh. Maybe someday, we will evolve to this level of enlightenment.
Holy Toledo momma, you look GOOD. My belief you look as old as you feel. If you act and feel young ... You look young. Just think of Willard's 100 year old birthday wishes. Some don't even look as if they were 80. Kudos to you : )
I hope I look as good as you do when I'm 49.
I think the age issue is there for some people and can get in the way for the superficial among us. I like to think that I wouldn't want to work for someone who wouldn't hire me due to my age. Another, even better, opportunity will come along for you, I'm sure.
You look AWESOME oh my gosh!!! That production company, well, it is their loss for sure. Another door will open, and I think it already has?! :)
Well it is totally illegal that they asked your age...totally illegal. They are only allowed to ask if you are older that 18. Boohoo to them.
Wow you look awesome...they are dumb to make that a deciding factor!
Our society can be so disappointing. You look fab!
Why did I think they weren't allowed to even ask age. But moving on from that. . . besides the fact that you are one hot mama, you also have proven to be one of the most hard working and persistent women I know {trademark comes to mind}. Big believer in the idea that when one door closes, there is always an open window waiting for you to charge through. Is it wrong that I secretly want that company to witness you rising to success somewhere else. That's just the bitter me coming out!
I can't believe they asked you that - any lawyer would have a field day with that illegal line of questioning. You rock 49, dear lady. You look great and those people don't deserve your talent. :)
First of all, you look amazing for any age, nevermind 49! (but seriously, you're 49?! I would have though 35...really!) I would hope that company didn't make a decision based on age...if they did, it's probably being run by a much younger person who hasn't realized all a woman can do, and all they've learned and accomplished by certain ages!
You are amazingly talented and it is certainly their loss!
That is completely ridiculous! Discrimination still exists, which sucks. You look fantastic for 49. Maybe you'll get some modeling contracts or make up that slows aging contracts.
Hilarious...All I can say is this: SUNSCREEN!
Janell
you look fab !!! don't let it get to you - :)
I would have never guessed that you were 49. Quite honestly, the production company is foolish to let that be a factor. Look at your work, it's gorgeous. This 33 year old would love to have a fraction of the talent you do!
Whoa!! 49 get out... I need to join this conversation:) I taught we share the same age!
Last yr when I turn 40, I saw my 11 yrs. old daughter wrote in her journal. My Mom turn 40 today and she think its the new 20 :)But the crazy thing is every time I went to her school kids will shouted " Maria you and your Mom looks like twins!:D!!
Reading your blog for quite a while now I learned so much from you not only on design .Also, time management, family stuff, etc... Thank you again because when I turn 40 last yr. It's kind a scared me I ask myself I'm I over age now? bec. there's alot of thing that I still want to do. But I always told myself the saying, YOU NEVER STOP FROM LEARNING! also If you will I think its not the age that matter I guess its what you did or accomplished in life.
I been busy preparing for my Naturalization Test as well as some DIY inspired by you I may show it to you, if it came out good to make you proud! :)
Keep inspiring others...
HOT MOMMA!!!
ummm I wish I looked as good as you do and I'm in my 20's!! I think that beauty and wisdom are the best things about aging! And needless to say you have aged WELL!
ARGH! You don't get experience and understanding with ummmm...time? With time comes age! I don't get how people don't understand this whole connection. Do I want some 22 yr old fresh from design school running around my house with a $15K budget to redo my kitchen? Potentially, but would I feel alot better if there was someone with experience with them? Definitely.
And FYI - you are ROCKIN' to be 49. Seriously, ROCKIN'!!!!
I only WISH that I looked like you at 49 instead of me at 32!
I never would have guessed you were 49! That seems like a strange reason to turn someone down, who cares what age you are if you've obviously got the talent. Hmm. Well, hopefully they are just behind schedule and something turns up in your inbox...
wow. First of all, I never would have guessed you are 49...You are a very beautiful woman...and look great!! Second, after seeing you on the Nate Show, I think you're a natural in front of the camera. So if the "next step" was purposely not sent, then the production company in question has certainly missed out on a very talented lady. But I'm hoping that it just got lost in transit.
xoxo
Wendy
Can I look like you at 49?? Please? Or maybe have an ounce of your energy now at 29? This is ridiculous.
-S
What?! I can't believe that. They just don't know what they're missing. I mean.. just look at you and all your adoring fans!!! They must be soft in the head.
First of all there is NO way you are 49!! You look way younger than that! And second, if they truly aren't getting back to you because of age, it's ridiculous! The should go off talent...and you've got lots of it (:
~Michaela
Speechless -- that you are 49?! WOW!! You look amazing!
It's tough to say. It's all in the hands of the person hiring.
That said, if you discount someone based only upon age than how can you be sure you're hiring the best person for the job? I mean, you're only 49, it's not like you're approaching retirement.
At any rate, if that's how this production company hires, you probably don't want to work for them anyway.
Trust me, it is his loss not yours! You look fantastic!
If it does, that's just sad. And if you are what 49 looks like, sign me up! You look incredible! xo
You don't look 49...and even if you did, so what? I want a designer who is creative, talented, and most importantly, wise. If the production company is worried that they will not connect with their "target market" because of your age, they are sorely mistaken. I'm 38 and having the time of my life. I hope I can be as successful as you are when I'm 49!
Having just turned 47 a couple of weeks ago, Janell, I am with you 100%! Of course, I have my days and I now have the title of "grandma" added to my resume. I try not to get annoyed in public though because I don't want people to think I'm going all menopausal on their butt! : )
I hope they realize what a mistake they have made, but I hope they realize it a little too late when someone else has snatched you up!
This is the place I turn to when I need design inspiration. I subscribe to plenty of design blogs, but yours is the one that inspires and helps me with my design projects. Nothing with that has to do with your or anyone else's age.
And by the way, you look fantastic!!
Remember the line from "Something's Gotta Give"...said by feminist sister at the dinner table...somewhat paraphrased...."Wome get their heart broken, and then they get productive!" I loved Kristi's comment and encouragement. Why must we wait for someone else to open the doors for us? Your talent and experience are far deeper than the people producing that show. Decide where you want to go and the doors will open up for you. Even though you look great for your age, talent doesn't have a beautiful face or a great body, and should be judged on it's own merit.
OK....I think I"m done for today! Great post Janelle. Thanks for giving us the opportunity to do what women do best....encourage one another!
Not only do you look good for 49, you look great! Yes, there is age descrimination. And it works both ways, with older people and young people too.
Your blog is one of my favorites and you are so creative. Just be who you are.
Thank you! You all are amazing...and I want to say I am in no way implying I would have been chosen in the end. I just have a pretty clear understanding from how things proceeded the process was stopped because of my age, but I would have loved the opportunity to prove myself or see if it was a right fit.
However, that is the thing about me, and many of you...things like this only make me more determined to have success in whatever I decide to pursue!
Janell
Janell, I was over at Sally's and read your comment to her so I hope it is Okay that I am chiming in on this.29,39,49,59, what does it matter if you are as cute and talented as you are. Actually in Calif it is not a legal question to ask, it is called Age descrimination???!!!!!
I think after the age of 56 things really changed for me and I consider myself a young 60yr old. I began to feel invisible and that what I had to say did not count. I am not whining , it is just an observation of mine that has been validated by many of my friends.
Thank God we all live past the age of 39!! So why not treat us equally. I say, be confident in yourself, you have so much to offer. I am sorry this has to be very disappointing. It is their loss. Must not be meant to be.
WE love you and your blog and your many, many talents, Hang in there,
Kathysue
Actually, I don't think 49 is the new 29. Because I think it's much, much better than 29.
In some cases, 29 LOOKS better than 49, but that's certainly not the case with you. You look wonderful--you're beautiful. I'm 47, so I know what women in their late 40's usually look like. . . and it's not what you look like. I can understand why a production company might have passed on someone who looked like she was not aging well; after all, appearance matters in that business. But your appearance would pass that test hands down!
In every category other than appearance, though, I really think 49 is far superior to 29. Wisdom, experience, street smarts--all those things are gained with age. Add to that the natural challenges facing a woman who's just heading into the childbearing/childrearing years, and I think a woman who's a little older is a really good bet.
You're an exceptionally lovely woman, and your talent is so evident. May you continue to flourish in all the opportunities presented to you. I pity the person who passed you by--sounds like a big mistake in judgment to me!
Oh my goodness....I hope hope hope I look half as GORGEOUS as you at 49! You are so creative and such an inspiration and they are CAH- RAY-ZAY!!!
I would never have guessed! You look amazing! AND- I am pumped to see your DIY projects.. hurry! :)
You do look 49, because you are 49 and you look like you. There isn't one way to look 49. Or I should say, 49 can look like you! The fact that you were asked your age is kind of gross - age should not have mattered one bit, regardless of what you looked like (which is fabulous).
Just as Bryn said...you do look amazing!! I would have NEVER guessed 49, seriously!! It truly is their loss!
GIRLFRIEND. You look wonderful. Whatever you're doing, keep it up! It's their loss if they're going to be so shallow.
Age discrimination is a bunch of B.S., and the street goes both ways. I've gotten a hard time from people because I'm "a kid" and I "don't know anything." So I feel your pain, albeit from the other side of the intersection.
Hi Janelle-
Ditto... what Richella wrote above plus I believe soceity's view on aging has to change. Maybe it is our generation who can begin to make that happen!
My best- Diane
When I started watching HGTV 12 years ago, my favorite host was Joan Steffend on Decorating Cents. She was so warm and real and she was definitely not 29. In your blog you have the same warm, "real" approach. Plus, I love your style.
To me, age has nothing to do with the designers I watch on TV. Good luck in your future endeavors whatever they may be.
You look great for 29 - I refuse to believe you're 49. Amazing...
- Danielle
I am floored! Are you kidding me?! Also, I would have never guessed you were 49. You look amazing to me.
Unfortunately I do think woman lose opptys bc of age, looks, weight, etc. It's a crazy world focused on the outside, not inside.
When I worked in corp, I knew men that were paid 25% more than me and we had the SAME job. Stinks.
Keep your chin up... we love you!
xo,
cristin
BARF. Forget 49. You look amazing for 29. You're hot. And I'm not even being nice.
Anyway, I could go on and on about how disgusted I am to read that this happened to you, but let's not waste one more iota of energy on those idiots.

So 100 comments later and we have established very definitively that you are beautiful, and talented, and amazingly creative! Women rock. No matter what our ages, we all have so much to offer the world. I have NO doubt that more opportunities (with people you would actually want to work with) will be coming your way.
You are smokin' Janell. I hope you are still reading comments...I'm so late. You have 101 reasons why you should keep doing what you are doing and know that you have a online community that loves you too!
When one door of opportunity closes, another opens. Sound cliche, but is sooo true! Keep rockin' JB. You are my hero!
PS the "annoyed" you is cute, too!
Hi Janell. I am also 49 and I would kill to look as beautiful as you. It's their loss!
I just want to thank you for all your terrific projects and for being an inspiration to me. I look forward to reading your blog every day.
Please know that there are people out there that do appreciate all you do. Thanks again.
ok, i know what happened...they probably emailed you and forgot the two "A's" isabellAAndmax? I do that sometimes ;-)
You look spectacular and hon, I'm just about to turn 32 and woulya believe I already feel like I've been left out of some sort of secret society!
I must say I look up to the Europeans in this regard -- they know that women only improve with age ;)
On to bigger and better things say I!
Cheers, Alcira

Their loss! Although I had never considered how old you might be before, I am shocked that you're 49 because I would've guessed late 30's- based on your kids' ages only. 49 is lookin' GOOD!!
Now THAT is crazy! Everything happens for a reason. Maybe skipping this particular opportunity will free that time up for something even more incredible and unexpected. Cant wait to see your DIY. P.S.: your painted kitchen cabinets inspired my husband and I to paint ours...it will be completed before the holidays - Im sooo excited!
Well, look at the bright side, maybe they were doing a senior citizen decorator profile special and realized you are WAY TOO YOUNG & hot :)
Don't let them get to you...like many said you are obviously too good for them anyway now! I LOVE your work and you're an amazing inspiration.
Janell, you are fabulously gifted and you look amazing -- for ANY age. If this company does not appreciate you, it is their loss. I'm guessing there is something much better ahead for you!
Just found you through
Mon's blog and I couldn't
agree more: 49 IS the new
29....HECK, maybe it's even
better than 29, because there
is wisdom to go with it : ) !!
YOU are in the game ~ looking
great and doing great things.
That's what counts. Don't let
it get you down.
xx Suzanne
Are they even *allowed* to ask your age? Wow, that's discouraging, but you know what? THEIR loss!! You look fabulous, and I know women 20 years younger who wish they looked as good! :-) Don't let the turkeys get you down.
Just had to post something that I didn't see in all of the other comments. I have no idea what the opportunity was, but let's say it was auditioning for Design Star or starring on the Nate Burkus show (wouldn't it be so cool if you had that opportunity - kidding!). If you were on one of those shows, I would never look at a 49-year-old woman and say "Oh, she's old, not interested." or "I'm interested in the other one because she's young." I'm assuming the opportunity was design related and age just has NOTHING to do with it for me. So where do these producers get off thinking that the demographic only wants people of a certain age??? I just want to see talent. I could care less what your age is, how you look, or where you're from.
It reminds me of the restaurant Wild Fire (we're in Chicago). I love eating there and every time we do, I always notice that the waiters and hostesses are COMPLETELY different than other restaurants. They are normal people. Some are heavier, some skinnier, some older, some younger. And it makes me feel so normal and comfortable! It gives me a very high opinion of the restaurant as I start to notice that many other restaurants are looking for a certain look in a waitress.
I think you are so amazingly talented that your popularity is just going to grow and grow and as it does, there's no way age is going to stop you. Maybe for certain snob companies it will, but if you end up with your own show on Oprah's new channel, hopefully other companies will take notice and realize it's not all about having to be a certain look.
It's so nice to see the number of comments on this thread! It seems age doesn't matter to any of us and that's so heart-warming. This is a good group of people!!
Kelly
I NEVER would have guessed 49. Ever. You look absolutely fantastic. Totally their loss!
first off...you are GORGEOUS, no matter your age. and i never, ever thought you were 49. so GOOD for you! being super-hot at 49 is something to be proud of!
and honestly, i don't think in most industries that age can affect a woman's opportunities. i think women have to work a little harder to MAKE opportunities for themselves.
Not only do you look fantastic but you are talented, for every age!! I think your skills and experiences increase with time and make us better. Good for you and I love the blog :)
ha! I seriously thought you were in your 30's. And no matter your age, you have amazing talent!
Jess
If that is the case, they are truly idiots. They must have no idea what incredible talent they are about to miss out on!
Plus you look 50 times better than most 20 years old I know! You are hot!
Their loss.
P.S I am inviting myself to the big bash. When you are turning 30 again! (:
First of all - wow I never would have guessed you were 49! You look great period - but wow I hope I look as awesome as you when I get to be that age.
Second - don't sweat that trifling production company. All this means is that a better opportunity is coming your way.
Third - It was absolutely ILLEGAL for them to ask your age. I am in the process of hiring for my team and I had to undergo a lot of training - asking questions of someone's age is NOT allowed. Period. I hope someone sues the pants off of that company.
Fourth - I follow your blog religiously and have to admit that I am so intimidated by your talent, etc.. I'm younger, single, so you'd think I would have it together, but I just started a much more demanding role via promotion. But I love design - and right now my house is a mess! I look at your place and go - why can't I get it together? Why can't I be put together like HER? I don't know how you do it!
THAT is the tv show I would love to see - you showing us how you manage to have this awesome blog, career AND family like this... and look so completely put together too. How DO you balance everything? I'm not even married, no kids and I feel like I can't even lift a paintbrush I'm so exhausted all the time, lol!
You are so awesome!
Girl, if I look like you when I'm 49, I would carry a mirror around and look in it all day :) Completely THEIR loss. You've got better things ahead...
Oh Janell....50 is the new 30 and 60 [I'm 58] is the new 40! All I can say is it sucks...but look at jane Fonda at 72 coming out with a new fitness video....I certainly do not want to stop doing what I love just because I am older than most designers. I believe passion for something is what keeps us young!
Oh.yea....by the way...you look awesome!
Okay, I know you have over 100 comments, but I just have to say, you are one smoking hot 49 year old Janell! Have a great weekend!
you look amazing... and judging from your talent your mind is just as amazing! :)
I hope to look as good as you do at 49. I'm crossing my fingers and my calories. I would much rather see someone with life and career experience rather than someone who is just starting their adult life. Good luck!

Just saw this but if they aren't hiring you then SHAME on them! You look absolutely fabulous and your work is to die for! Brush it off and know we love you!
You look awesome, I never would have guessed you were 49! Well it's their loss frankly, because you are one of my favorite designers and I always look forward to what I'll see from you next!
I'm 46 and I often get discouraged that I am not doing all of this at a younger age, or actually, that all of this technology wasn't around when I started designing at 30. I'm bummed that your situation validated what I already think -- that age trumps fabulousness sometimes, but I'm also a believer in the one door closes, another opens. I'm sure a new open door is right around the corner. It has to be -- you are a huge inspiration for me. And, hello? You're 49? HUGE surprise and pleasant wake-up call for me! :) You rock!
I know this little road block is gonna lead you to a fantastic place. I know YOU know that too. That's just the kinda gal you are. We love you, and don't forget that.
That's very annoying - having met you in person I can honestly say you look absolutely amazing! I'm sure a better offer will be on your way!
First of all, you're smokin' hot sister! I can't believe your age b/c your skin is so great. And you're a very youthful dresser - nice style.
49, seriously? You look at least 10 years younger, you're fabulous and ageless!
Oh no they didn't!!?? From an almost 46 year old woman I am ticked for you!! and by the way you look fabulous!!!
there is no WAY I would have ever guessed you are 49! I'm not even going to say you look great for your age, I think you look great period! And if I HAD to guess I totally would have guessed closer to 39 :)
there is no WAY I would have ever guessed you are 49! I'm not even going to say you look great for your age, I think you look great period! And if I HAD to guess I totally would have guessed closer to 39 :)
Janell, you LOOK fabulous for ANY AGE (and not just 49!). I'm 29 and would die for your slim figure.
I absolutely hate that men get to "peak" in their 40s or even 50s while I'm already past my prime since I'm no longer a nubile 18 or 19 year old. Completely absurd and absolutely false, but let's hope that social perception is fading fast.
It would seem that 2 years ago... the answer to your question was "Because something better was in store!" Happy Birthday!! You're SMASHING it at 51.
