Drapery Panels: Done! And Next? A Few Pillows...
Using the steps I outlined in this (long, multi-post) tutorial, the drapes were cut, sewn and hemmed...
(checking fabric band placement, in the harsh early morning light!)
...with a band of fabric added along the bottom edge, following the steps in a tutorial here. I think I'm good for about one pair of drapes a year. Any more than that and I would be sending the fabric to the seamstress, despite the cost. (Ha, who am I kidding....)
Up next, a very easy project in comparison...stitching a few pillows using this muted green fabric and a bit of gorgeous trim.

I'm feeling the same way about the weather, although the wind went down and the sun came out yesterday afternoon, so that was a bonus...
I really like the way the band on the window treatment lightens it up and ties it in at the same time. That sneak peek with the headboard, the lamp and the window treatments looks great, even with the cloudy day! Happy weekend...

Those are gorgeous...they look custom and crazy expensive. I love the nubby texture and warmth they bring in too.
I'm using your tutorial and attempting no-sew pillows....my corners look terrible?!?!
No sew pillows...well, if you are willing to sew the key to getting the corners right are to stitch curved corners. That is what works for me. With no sew, can the corners be folded like an envelope? Does that make sense?

Beautiful! I would love to watch you as you do your hems. That has always been the hardest part of sewing drapes for me.
My husband says I'm too much of a perfectionist. Maybe, but yours are perfect! I wish I knew your secret.
I used a slip stitch, this drapery fabric has a lot of texture, so the stitches didn't show, making the job quite easy! Janell

The stitching part isn't the problem. It's the measureing. And trying to get them even. I like my hems within an 1/8 of an inch to the floor. No matter how many times I measure I can never get them right. I have to hang them, pin the hems in place, take them down, iron the hems, hang them again, adjust the hems again, take them down, iron the hems again, hang them again. I must do this process a half a dozen times before I'm satisfied. Then I can finally sew them. There has to be an easier way.

Wow Mary, I feel for you! This is the process I follow: I hem them in place...pin, iron and stitch, all while hanging still hanging on the rod, so I can check them as I stitch.

Yes, see where the iron board is standing? Just pull up the drapes and press the hem, stitch them and then iron on the panels. Less work in my book, plus you really can see if the hem is the right length and check on the placement of the trim without having to take down and rehang the drapes.

As usual, they look stunning! love the contrast band of fabric! Whew, doesn't it feel great to finish a huge project like that (I say huge just because of all the yardage - it's a workout just moving it around!) Now you can munch on Halloween goodies as your reward :)
Your master looks awesome - I love the look of the band. Was just reading through your tutorials on making drapes, and looking forward to trying my hand at them as I'm not finding anything I like "off the shelf".
The tutorial is a bit overwhelming when you see the number of steps, but several people have written me it was very helpful when they tackled sewing drapes. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions when you try making your own!!

I really think you have great taste and was very interested to see you doing your room over in a dark brown color scheme. With all the hype over "grey is THE new neutral/ new brown", I've been afraid to use brown in any of my new projects. I'd be interestd to hear your thoughts on grey vs brown.

Wonderful question! I adore gray, LOVE LOVE LOVE! But the brown/tan/ivory/green/steel gray color palette seemed right for this space, particularly given my goal for the room design to flow with the colors, patterns and finishes in the adjacent Master Bathroom (which continues to be one of my favorite designs in the house!) That bath has blue/gray walls, very similar to the canvas above the settee, so introducing a touch of this color into the room.
I think in design one should use colors, styles and finishes that you love most. Be aware of trends, incorporate ideas that appeal most to you, but don't be slave to them.

I make all my own, as well, and every time I say no more, and swear I'm going to have someone else do them, I conclude again that I'm just too much of a control freak to hand it over (besides being too cheap when I can do it!) I can't imagine hemming on the rod -- doesn't that break your back?? Kudos! And, love the new blog look to go with the new photo :)
