Such was the case with the comments on my Houzz Ideabook last weekend, 'TVs in the Bedroom, Thumbs up, Thumbs down?' I wasn't terribly surprised by the amount of comments, because I asked a direct question that I had a feeling people would feel compelled to answer. But what surprised me is that after hearing some of the same points repeated over and over, they started to have an impact on me.
(where TV may be placed, above settee)
So, the decision to place a TV in the master bedroom is now, surprisingly, up in the air. Don't call me out if one does show up in there at some point, but for now we are taking a wait and see approach. And indeed, what is the hurry, one can always be added later...
(future "art wall")
In the meantime, I had planned on putting together a collection of art in the room. One special piece of artwork would be wonderful hung above the settee, (the placeholder for a possible future TV) and an "art wall" would be a nice counterpoint on the wall to it's right, a shorter length of wall between the bathroom and closet doors.

Here is a wonderful collection of art by Jen of Made By Girl that is quite inspiring...

...and another art wall example found on Houzz.
And for more inspiration in another direction, these are some left over fabrics that may find their way into the room in the form of a pillow or two. Oh, and then bedding. Yes, I have some work to do!
But back to opinions...what about you? When was the last time you were swayed on an opinion by a good argument?

I would have a TV if my husband would go for it. But, no such luck. So, we compromised and put one in the bathroom.
I love Jen's art wall. How had I never seen this before?
I love the art wall from Jen. Now just to think of where to put this inspiration in my house. Maybe the dining room or entry.
We don't have a TV in the bedroom and haven't for 9-10 years. I like having a place to go to read or just be quiet. We have two children (7 & 3 1/2). A quiet space is so important to me even though they do find me ;)
Up in the air - I like that. You can always add on later. I am thinking more and more that it is nice NOT to have a TV in the bedroom. If you do change your mind, I am sure that it will work well...
I can't decide either. I'm currently using my TV as my computer monitor! So I have'nt had a TV in my room for months. I don't really miss it until a show is coming on HGTV that I really want to see and then I have to sit in the family room and watch it...ALONE!
Plus, my fall shows have not started back yet (Grays Anatomy, Private Practice, Modern Family), so I probably would want my TV then!
Your room is going to turn out so beautiful that I would be too distracted by it than watching TV!
We do have a TV in the bedroom...my husband likes it because he can retreat in there when I turn on my "chick" shows at night. I am not complaining because then I get to watch TV in peace ;)
Have you thought about using a laptop snuggled in bed instead? It allows you a lot of flexibility and can be taken out of the room at a moment's notice should things get...errrr....amorous> ;-)(I just noticed I typoed 'things' ans 'things'!! Freudian slip if ever there was one!).
We do that and, honestly, it works so well.
I change my mind all the time on the whole 'chippy furniture' craze that's all over blogland. I confess that I think it's a bit of a fad but I'm still taken in by it. How bad am I?!
I'm surprised at you...being swayed by other's opinions. It's your room. I KNOW you can decorate it so it functions and looks beautiful.
There are all kind of ways now to disguise a TV. I personally like a big ornate frame around the TV. I've seen that done and it looks beautiful.
Or how about a mirror that has a TV in it?
Or put the TV in a wall mounted cabinet with flat doors that cover the TV. You can have a beautiful picture on the front of the doors so it looks like art when the doors are closed to hide the TV.
I've been swayed by others opinions - I guess that's the great thing about keeping an open mind! The only things I don't sway on is when I've decided on a paint colour or something decor related and someone tells me it's not a great idea, when they don't have the same taste as me and it's for my home, not theirs. Do what works best for your lifestyle and stay true to yourself - that's the only way you'll be happy with your choice. :)
I think it's okay to be swayed by others' opinions if you find something they have to say resonates with you. For something like this, it's easy to try out their suggestions and then decide - so that's nice. :)
Personally, we don't have a TV in our bedroom. We aren't much of TV-watchers (we don't even have cable, haha) and so when we do watch TV it's more of a family activity. We often have movie-nights, where we snuggle up together on the couch and watch a movie or tv show together - we love it. We also only have 1 TV in the house - in the basement. However, we LOVE music, and have radios/stereos throughout the house - basement, living room, office and bedroom. We love rocking out while cleaning, or putting on some mood music sometimes in the bedroom... ;)
While no TV in the bedroom works for us, it may or may not work for you. Either way, I don't think anyone will blame you for which way you go on the TV debate - it's such a personal thing that it really just depends on the person/people.

Yes, that is what I like about this situation, I can do the room and then decide if I miss having a TV in there or not. Surprisingly I haven't since I removed the armoire and TV out a couple months ago to begin the redesign...so that got me to thinking when I listened to various health concerns, sleep issues mentioned in the houzz article. Not that I've ever had any trouble with sleeping, TV or no TV! Janell
I so understand both the pros and cons, everyone has a good point! We don't have TV in our bedroom, and we could have used it for Sat a.m cartoons when the kids were younger !!
Lovely art wall by Jen, I just ordered her 'Love' print!

(P.S. You CAN, if there's enough wall "depth/space", have an actual cut-out made to RECESS a TV, then have a pic, mirror or whatever to cover it up... That's in case you'd LIKE one but don't want it "bulging" out from the wall or visible in any way except for you two... Just a thought... <(I did that at our ski place in Park City & it worked beautifully!>.. Best again, Me)...
(P.S. Sorry about putting two "n"s instead of two "l"s in yer name above!... Smiles~~~)...
Always great to have options...
I am swayed all the time by good 'arguments', especially when the source is Beloved Husband. But actually, since his tastes lean heavily toward safe/classic, I think he talks me out of some of my wackier ideas and the house benefits in the end.
Could I tentatively say, I'm not too sure about an art wall in the bedroom - it's such a visually stimulating thing, I think I'd prefer it in another space...
Oh Linda, I like your idea. I suspect there is enough room in the wall as there was an option to put a fireplace here, but the builder didn't. If I were to go this route the budget would certainly jump, but as I am not making a decision anytime soon, I'll just keep this idea in mind!
Hubby doesn't really care, though kind of likes the idea of just watching something on the computer if there is a show that must be watched! Janell
Struggler...yes, the idea of an art wall getting busy did occur to me, I think it needs to be simple, using identical frames and subdued artwork...soothing. Excellent point! Janell
oh, the great TV dilema. I'm trying my best to keep the baby away from the TV. Sometimes it works better, sometimes it does not. I don't even want the TV in the living room. Instead I'm planning on reworking my basement to have a dedicated TV room in there. After spending hours upon hours online, TV is the last thing I want at the end of the day.
I like that you have an open mind about things. However for me TV is just not part of my lifestyle, so its not something I would ever change my mind about. Internet on the other hand... we have one stationary computer and two laptops, plus a computer dedicated solely to the TV (since we just watch movies and never ever ever cable). So I guess to each their own.
We had one in our old home, and now that we have moved to a nicer place...we decided against it. Our house was built in the 50's and there is just a lack of space. Another issue was that in our previous home, we would spend the entire evening watching TV instead of chatting about our day and reading books. We just mindlessly watched whatever was on to decompress. I do miss it from time to time. Good luck with your decision.
My husband and I have been married one year Sunday. We decided that we would live TV free for our first year of marriage. We own the actual Television, but don't get any channels what so ever. NOT ONE! We'll rent dvds and snuggle on the couch but we don't even have the ability to watch and shows together.
Instead we find ourselves going for walks in the evening together, heading to friends houses to watch a particular show or game, and taking up things like sewing for me and construction projects for him.
It's been so nice that we've decided to go without TV again this year.
I'm not going to say we'll do it forever. There's been times when I wanted so badly to just veg... i mean we missed ALL of the Olympics.
However, in out home the pluses have out weighed the minuses.
:)
Hey Janell. So I've been reading about your TV dilemma. I have an idea, its something I’ve always wanted to do. Have you ever seen a TV that has been concealed inside a mirror? I think its such a wonderful way to hide the TV stylishly.
Here's a website I found. I never really looked into seeing how expensive they are. Hope this helps!

HI, Janell, I asked this question on my blog awhile back & got many split opinions on it too. I think it was about 1/2 and 1/2 for or against. We do have a TV & really enjoy having it in our room, since we tend to close everything down by around 8:30 or 9 & it's nice to just get comfy & watch some TV in a cozy spot.
I know everyone has their preferences & have to decide what is best for them, so ultimately I'm sure you will do the same. Your room is looking beautiful!
JANELL: Cant wait to see it.....so cute that you chose my ART WALL as inspiration...It no longer looks like that, because i am so FANATICAL & like changing things... :))))

Hey Janell,
I know this may be a weird question, but which direction does your room "face"? I thought I read somewhere on your blog that it faces South, but I can't remember.
Thanks!!
I was recently debating a paint color for the back of my media cabinet and asked my blog readers for their opinions. It really helped! They pointed out things I hadn't thought of and gave good tips. Of course, in the end, it's my home to live with and my ultimate decision to make. But I really appreciated the constructive feedback.
That new piece looks great, Janell!
Another suggestion is a projection television. One of the reasons that we're installing all of our flat screens so permanently in this home is bc that's how we plan to do it when we move next.
