This Week's Ideabook On Houzz: Painted Wood Floors

There are instances when painting floors can be the best solution to freshen up a space and add character. It could also prove to be a hard decision to make, as flooring is one of the most expensive changes to make in a home, so painting could be a risk. But it's a choice that can make sense if the floors need repair or have been refinished so many times that doing so again is not an option.

I was inspired to write this Ideabook and look for additional rooms with painted floors on Houzz when Rene, from the blog Cottage and Vine, painted the floors in her boy's bedrooms white. This proved to be a smart choice with great results when refinishing the floors were not in the cards.

Here are several rooms in which homeowners and designers also put aside their reservations and pulled out the paint brushes.

Design*Sponge- Catherine’s Patterned Floor

The wood floor in this home is very worn and presented the perfect opportunity to paint. There was nothing to lose and everything to gain. The large pattern painted in white could not be more dramatic. This is a wonderful example of what can be accomplished by painting floors!

In this space the mix of the painted turquoise floors and golden yellow walls is a pure delight. Fresh, happy, sweet and modern, all at once.

White

Painting wood floors with crisp white paint is a popular choice. Here the result is just great. The wide white planks add to the fresh modern appeal and create a wonderful sense of movement against the ceiling beams running in an opposing direction.

I love the idea of a painted floor, I personally couldn't bring myself to do it.

The turquoise floor is the best. I think it would look fabulous for a screened in porch! So are you painting any of your floors?

I love the look of painted floors! I've seen them in nurseries and they really are cute there too!

I can't wait to read the rest of your idea book!

Oh man. I love the look of the white boards, but thinking about taking a leap like that makes me stressed out. Maybe if we buy a fixer-upper someday and we can't re-finish...

No, the only floors that have any chance of getting painted in my house is the garage floor! I did however, think about painting the floors in a previous house when I really really disliked them and I could not afford to replace them.

I really love white floors, but the maintenance always concerns me! Turquoise is just dreamy and so soothing, love that one too!

I've always wanted to do this but don't have the guts. I'm afraid of the paint coming off. I would first try it in my closet :)
Have a great weekend!

Love the huge pattern on the floor! I would so do that in the right space. I'd really have to be working with awful floors to have the guts to paint, but if they were? Oh, yeah!

I painted my kitchen floors last year w/Farrow & Ball's floor paint in Light Gray no.17. It's held up very well and I love the feel on bare feet.

The floor was hardwood but during a period of temporary sanity when I had it installed (ripped out the 50's vinyl) I chose a natural stain that left the floors on the orange side. All the rest of the house has darker wood so painting the floors was a way to end the 2-tone wood dilemma. Really glad I did.

Painted floors have been a lifesaver for me and I highly recommend them. In our case, the floors are actually sub-floors. We have lived in our house almost two years now and are just beginning of thinking about putting down "real floors". We're in no rush. I have lots of posts about them here - http://firstadream.blogspot.com/search/label/Painted%20Floors.

Love that first photo. I would do this, but only to a floor that was in really bad shape. I love my natural wood floors too much! And as for summer...it'll be here (NC) for at least another month. I wouldn't mind a little fall!

Janell, I really enjoyed this post and have also enjoyed reading the comments both here and in Houzz. Thank you so much for mentioning my little project. Never in a million years would I have guessed that something I did would inspire you, oh master of all things creative and wonderful :) I would like to add, that the floors are wearing well with 2 not so careful big boys and a large dog with even larger claws. We do love the floors and are happy with our decision to paint them.

Hi!

I chose hardwood flooring (Redondo beach) for my daughter's tress house. I agree that white paint is fit to any home interior. This color give an incredible appeal to your home and looks clean.

These are so lovely. I never considered this flooring Honolulu option, until now. This is a brilliant way to bring more life to your house. I guess it is not even difficult to do. I have never seen an actual painted floor in our neighbourhood so I guess we will be the first. Thank you.
