The original gray and yellow color combination was just not working. Unfortunately I was well into stenciling the tray before I came to this realization. Oh well, better late than never.
After pulling out a can of ivory paint and successfully covering the yellow, I was again feeling the love for this project!
Karen from Strictly Simple Style, one of the many blogs I enjoy reading, commented on yesterday's post, saying, "I'm looking forward to seeing how the tray turns out and how you are able to get the design finished near the edges. That looks like it could be a challenge."
Yes, it was a bit of a challenge, but doable. I simply bent the stencil at the tray edges, stenciling in as much of the pattern as possible with the stencil brush. Afterwards, a small paint brush was used to fill in the remaining pattern up to the edges.
Here is the final result. (And once I get properly styled and pretty shots I'll post those as well!)
I am so infatuated with this stencil that it just may show up on the walls of the Master Bathroom WC, in a deep steel blue and ivory. What do you think?
Be sure to enjoy this Fall weekend and look for my latest Houzz Ideabook tomorrow, which covers the topic of TV's in the bedroom.

Wow!! It turned out beautifully.
What a great save!
Beautiful. You have me stencil crazy!
Looks fabulous! It's was worth all that hard work! Have a great weekend
I am speechless! You've completely turned around my opinion of stencils in this one post (fickle? Moi?!).
This looks elegant and understated. I'm really impressed with how you've done the edges. That must have taken a lot of patience.
Well done on persevering. I love it!
So that's how it's done. Will bending the stencil make it difficult to use again or is it flexible enough that its shape returns?
Great great result. And yes, please show us the project in the bathroom - I would love to try it myself somewhere!
To eliminate having to hand paint the edges, would it have been easier to cut the stencil down to the correct size using the bottom of the tray and tracing around it onto the stencil?
It sure turned out great. And you didn't have to use the garage to get it done. I bet your husband is pleased.
LOVE IT!! You've read my mind - think the stencil would look great on walls. I've been thinking of using a stencil for our downstairs bathroom too!
GORGEOUS!!! You are my idol, Janell!
Looks great! Now you have got me thinking about stencils...
Have a great weekend! Jade
Hi Karen, another great question, which I had a feeling someone would ask. Bending the stencil does not damage it as it is VERY flexible.
Mary, I had thought about cutting the stencil down to size, but then I wouldn't have it to use for another project. (And I will use it for another project!) However, if you didn't care, cutting it down to the exact size to fit within the surface of the tray would be a great and easy solution!!

Gorgeous, gorgeous. I say yes, yes, yes, do stencil the bathroom walls! You have me so wanting to do stencils everywhere in my house now!
I love these trays! I must do one soon!
And stenciling the WC is a great idea! Can't wait to see.

Shut up! That tray is amazing! Wow! This is a must-do project for me for sure!
Only you could turn what you consider a disaster into this. I will have to find that $2 Goodwill tray.

It looks fantastic! Way to save the day and make a potential disaster into a gem! :)
It came out so well! I love your trays. I think you should do a giveaway with one someday ;)
Infatuated would be an understatement for me. Can't wait to see where else it pops up. The edges look great, btw.

It came out perfect!!
Ooh! I love that stencil. So pretty!
I love it! Actually a couple of months ago I was looking for a stencil just like this one and came up empty handed. Thanks to you, the site is now book-marked while
I consider the possibilities. Thanks!
I LOVE that! So beautiful and the colors are just perfect together! I was thinking about buying this stencil and using in a small space as well! I would love to see this in your bathroom!
Such a pretty tray, love the the stenciling
I'm quickly becoming obsessed with all things grey (especially Martha grey).
Now, I just need to find some trays and start stenciling!
So pretty! But, now you're not going to want to cover it up!
Hmm.. another great idea! I have a tray on my ottoman that I want to re-vamp, I might just try this.
DARN that is so cool! Maybe I missed it, but where did you get the stencil?
:)))))))))
Your tray is so beautiful. I love it! This is another project I might have to steal from you and put it on my list of to do's. :)
This looks amazing! I can't wait to try one.
It's gorgeous!! The steel blue with ivory on your mb wall will be gorgeous too. Did you get the links to the tray supply places I commented on the other day? Let me know and I'll give them to you again. Great sources for other unfinished wood stuff too.

LOVE IT!! I can't get enough of that trellis design!
You should totally give the WC the stencil treatment!
I love that stencil and your tray turned out gorgeous. It'd be stunning on the walls.
Have a great weekend!

You should put little silver knobs on the bottoms like a Martha Stewart tutorial I saw once! :)
Janell that really turned out beautifully, Great job but you always do a great job, you are one clever lady, kathysue
Great project and I'm so happy it turned out spectacular! I too have not been a fan of stencils (too many bad ivy leaves out there) and this turned me around. Can't wait to see the WC!!
after i saw three men and a lady stencil her bathroom ceiling, i ordered this stencil. initially i was going to do our bathroom ceiling, but for now that has been put on hold.
i think i'll try a tray, first!
Love the new gray / white color combo. Also, you did an amazing job with the edges!!!

Love this! I tried something similar awhile back, but the paint bubbled and peeled. :(
What kind of paint did you use?
LLN~ Oh, that is too bad! After sanding I made sure to paint on a layer of primer, then used SW ProClassics paint, which is a water based paint intended for furniture, etc., dries to a hard finish.
