A Stenciled Tray ~ All's Well That Ends Well

What can I say, I'm feeling some Tray Happiness! The trellis stencil, purchased from Cutting Edge Stencil, is simply fabulous. And the oversized tray, measuring 18" x 24", will easily accommodate a stack of books and a few accessories when placed on a coffee or dining room table. Not that I'll be covering up the trellis pattern anytime soon!

The original gray and yellow color combination was just not working. Unfortunately I was well into stenciling the tray before I came to this realization. Oh well, better late than never.

After pulling out a can of ivory paint and successfully covering the yellow, I was again feeling the love for this project!

Karen from Strictly Simple Style, one of the many blogs I enjoy reading, commented on yesterday's post, saying, "I'm looking forward to seeing how the tray turns out and how you are able to get the design finished near the edges. That looks like it could be a challenge."

Yes, it was a bit of a challenge, but doable. I simply bent the stencil at the tray edges, stenciling in as much of the pattern as possible with the stencil brush. Afterwards, a small paint brush was used to fill in the remaining pattern up to the edges.

Here is the final result. (And once I get properly styled and pretty shots I'll post those as well!)

I am so infatuated with this stencil that it just may show up on the walls of the Master Bathroom WC, in a deep steel blue and ivory. What do you think?

Be sure to enjoy this Fall weekend and look for my latest Houzz Ideabook tomorrow, which covers the topic of TV's in the bedroom.

I am speechless! You've completely turned around my opinion of stencils in this one post (fickle? Moi?!).

This looks elegant and understated. I'm really impressed with how you've done the edges. That must have taken a lot of patience.

Well done on persevering. I love it!

So that's how it's done. Will bending the stencil make it difficult to use again or is it flexible enough that its shape returns?

Great great result. And yes, please show us the project in the bathroom - I would love to try it myself somewhere!

To eliminate having to hand paint the edges, would it have been easier to cut the stencil down to the correct size using the bottom of the tray and tracing around it onto the stencil?
It sure turned out great. And you didn't have to use the garage to get it done. I bet your husband is pleased.

Hi Karen, another great question, which I had a feeling someone would ask. Bending the stencil does not damage it as it is VERY flexible.

Mary, I had thought about cutting the stencil down to size, but then I wouldn't have it to use for another project. (And I will use it for another project!) However, if you didn't care, cutting it down to the exact size to fit within the surface of the tray would be a great and easy solution!!

Only you could turn what you consider a disaster into this. I will have to find that $2 Goodwill tray.

It's gorgeous!! The steel blue with ivory on your mb wall will be gorgeous too. Did you get the links to the tray supply places I commented on the other day? Let me know and I'll give them to you again. Great sources for other unfinished wood stuff too.

Great project and I'm so happy it turned out spectacular! I too have not been a fan of stencils (too many bad ivy leaves out there) and this turned me around. Can't wait to see the WC!!

Love this! I tried something similar awhile back, but the paint bubbled and peeled. :(

What kind of paint did you use?

Janell @ Isabella and Max said...

LLN~ Oh, that is too bad! After sanding I made sure to paint on a layer of primer, then used SW ProClassics paint, which is a water based paint intended for furniture, etc., dries to a hard finish.
