The Interview That Inspired The Big Boy's Bedroom Design & The Final Result

before

after

Prior to beginning work on Max's bedroom I decided it would be fun to "interview" him and collect his ideas for the room. I always do this with my clients, so why not him? Looking back I think it is very interesting to see how his input was incorporated into the room design! Here is some what he had to say:

Mom/Designer: "What are your favorite colors?"

Max/Client: "Black is my favorite color and it might be yellow in the future."

Mom/Designer: "Is there anything you don't like about your room in its current condition?"

Max/Client: "That the walls are plain."

Mom/Designer: "Okay. How do you like a room to look?"

Max/Client: "Hum, like...not plain. I like them designed."

Mom/Designer: "What do you like to do in your room?"

Max/Client: "Sleep."

Mom/Designer: "Yes, that makes sense. Is there anything else you like to do, or would like to be able to do in your room?"

Max/Client: "Read. Look at artwork. Make artwork."

Mom/Designer: "Is there anything we can bring into the room for these activities?"

Max/Client: "Chalkboard. C-H-A-....I don't know how to spell it."

Mom/Designer: "Is there anything else you would like to see added to the room?"

Max/Client: "Hum, yeah, a map on the wall, anywhere."

Mom/Designer: "Do you have a favorite interior design style?"

Max/Client: "Real."

While we were doing the interview I got a call, he wanted to get on the phone and this is what he said: "I'm doing this boring interview with my mom..."

Ha! He loves his bedroom, so I think even he would now agree the time spent talking to me about the design was worth it!

That interview is the cutest thing I've ever read! Well he certainly knows what he likes and I think you captured it for your client perfectly! Love the chalkboard and map wall and what a fun idea for the pendant light! :)

I adore your sons new bedroom. The chalkboard and chalkboard lamps are genius. Wish you had recorded the interview...priceless!!

You did a wonderful job incorporating all his "wants"! I bet he's happy in that room. I think the map part is my favorite - it's whimsical, but your son will still grow with it. Honestly though, all the details are perfect!

mydesignchic...oh, you are so right! That would have been wonderful, a missed opportunity to be sure. I'll keep this in mind for the future. Janell

This interview is hilarious!! I love the "black, but could be yellow in the future.". Sounds exactly like something my son would say.

Thank you so much for answering my question about conversion kits! I have way-too-many-pot-light syndrome in my house, so I'm going to pull the trigger on them!!

Can't wait to see you on Nate!! Love him, love you! Great combo!

So sweet and so cute! I'm glad he likes it.My eldest boy hates change and still isn't sure (well, maybe grudgingly) that he likes his new room!

Janell @ Isabella and Max said...

Modern Country Style...Oh, that is too bad, but every personality is different! Max truly enjoyed the process with me. Each day when he got off the bus, I was so excited to show him any progress and he was excited to see, running up to his room. His appreciation and response was really fun to see! Janell

Yay! I just love this especially as a mom to boys. They really do care about their rooms and it is nice to include them in the process (even though I'm not a Carolina Blue fan). I can't wait until tomorrow!!

Hi Janell! Priceless inerview (and dying to see the Nate one!). In the middle of moving to a big boy room and my little man vascilates between a mickey mouse room (not going to happen) and wanting walls he can draw on! Might have to go the chalkboard route! Do you use erasers or water (worried about the dust issue)?

Congrats! Gosh darn it-Nate is on at 5 pm, during the time I call the arsenic hour at our house! Wish I had a PVR. Maybe you'll post a video clip of your segment?

I don't know how I've not found your blog before now, but I am in love with this entire post. The interview is adorable. I LOVE the chalkboard paint- you made it look so bold but not cheesy. And the maps- *squeal*! How do you feel about copycats? :-) (Not for monetary gain or anything like that- just my own house.)

I redid my son's bedroom also on a budget and it turned out great. The only expense I could not lower was the bed. My son had the heart set on the bed we bought.

Hamptontoes said...

Congrats on your air time with Nate! I just did a small segment too (on my son's room.) I can't believe you have a compass on the ceiling. I spoke with an artist when my son was born about painting a compass on his ceiling (where his fixture is located...it is a jet...always have thought the compass would be a fabulous addition.) The artist was at the end of her pregnancy and taking a break from working. I am having ceiling work done this week on his room...perhaps I need to see if she is ready to return to working. Great job you did on your sons room!
