This Week's Ideabook On Houzz: The New Look Of Nurseries

Is there any other room more special to put together than a nursery? What a special time, when a new baby is about to be brought home, preparing the nursery for the new arrival is a wonderful way to celebrate the upcoming event. And no, I don't have any news to share...it's just with the kids returning to school soon, one does think about how sweet it would be to have a baby around as well!

The fun part about putting together a nursery these days is how the idea of what this room should look like has truly evolved over the last several years. Until recently, the approach would have been to visit a local baby furnishing store to select the necessary items and then add pink or blue decor to go with it all. While those resources are still wonderful for the basics, new parents and designers are now expanding their options for how to pull this room together with unique style.

recent inspirations

Among the big trends in nursery design are using furniture not specifically designed for a baby's room, to include an unusual mix of colors that defy the gender of the baby and the addition of delightful wall decals. This room has all of these elements. The giraffe decal sports a fun print and the mixture of blue, hot pink, orange and yellow is vibrant. The wall unit, as well as the classic chair upholstered in a boldly striped fabric, could easily be found in a living room or den.

Nurseries can be accessorized with virtually any item that strikes your fancy. From a poster with inspiring words to a tray covered in a whimsical pattern.

Another way nurseries are embracing a look outside the typical definition for these rooms is using fabrics not necessarily associated with a baby's room. Here the roman shades are made from Sungold, a sophisticated yet fun fabric by Thomas Paul. They are striking against the bright walls and fun paired with the charming tree wall decal.

Great post! I completely agree w/mixing the furniture so it can be re-used/re-purposed in the future.

I love these inspiration photos. I'm getting ready to do a very non-traditional nursery (it won't even have a crib in it!) For my son, and a new baby on the way (shh..no one knows). I loved the elements highlighted here.

Nurseries have definitely changed...I think for the better. I never liked the "matchy-matchy" look of what the baby super stores sold. I always liked incorporating the old and new together to make something special and homey for the new little person. I think it is also easier on the wallet to do it that way ;o)

Great post! The first image from Domino I used as a reference when doing my son's nursery. The furnishings and colors have been great and easily transitioned to a big boy room.

One more thing! I have used a mirror above the changing table too, they are really great once the baby can sit and then stand. Easier to dress them when they are distracted by "that other baby"! One of these mobiles above the table are fun too. http://www.oompa.com/baby-toys/item/HA0980/Haba-Mouton-Mini-mobile.html?oompaItem=Haba_Mouton%20Mini-mobile

Janell - Are your blog posts on Houzz always "featured" blogs? I was so happy to come across it tonight when I decided to go to Houzz for the first time. What an amazing resource and how cool that you are prominently featured with your nursery collection.

Speaking of nurseries, I was working on my sister in laws most of the day today! Oh it is looking good if I may say so myself! And I'm glad that people have stepped out of the 'nursery in a bag' way of decorating too! With the one I'm working on, I basically "told" her what direction we were going in. Girl you should have seen the stuff she wanted me to add!

Oh, and that nursery with the Thomas Paul fabric...I simple adore it! Also the mirror above the changing table is a neat idea. I love how they used such an ornate mirror next to a modern style clock!

Have a great night!

See how quickly you forget what having a baby around is like? Oh right, I used to love putting my kids in front of a mirror!

And yes Karen, I write one Ideabook for Houzz a week, on whatever subject that strikes my fancy. In late September I will start writing two a week. I enjoy it as it gives me a chance to explore trends/design ideas that I am not currently working on myself.

A Houzz reader just brought up a very important point in a comment on the Houzz site, safety. In any nursery, and particularly ones in areas prone to earthquakes, it is very important to consider what is hung above and around the crib. When Isabella was born we lived in S.F and this was certainly a primary concern!

As with great design, there is a marriage of function (and in this case safety) with beauty!

I love your picks! I had a few of those saved in my inspiration file when we were working on my son's nursery! That was by far my favorite room in my house to put together!!

The mirror above that changing table, though beautiful, does scare me. We have an alphabet canvas above ours and my son grabs it every single diaper change! I finally had to secure it better so there was no chance he would pull it on himself.

I always look forward to your Ideabooks!

I concur with the notion that they have certainly evolved. Like most things its just a sign of time current time. I think its good. Stimulation for the little ones.

I love this post. As someone who worked tirelessly to make a sophisticated nursery I would like to thank you for this post. One of my favorite things about my daughter's nursery was bringing in a homemade table from my husband and a vintage chandelier and baby scale. It is refreshing to see the unexpected, rather than the same old.

Love these ideas, especially as I start to work on a nursery idea board! Too much great inspiration... not enough space :).

Great post Janelle. I have found myself looking at baby nurseries quite a bit to keep up on popular color combinations for our custom baby & kid's rugs. Have you checked out our initial & monogram rugs? If not, you can see them at www.creativecarpetdesign.com

I love the new styles but have to say it's all "new" only in the "what goes around comes around" sense.

Many of the "mod" styles with fresh pops of color, animals, etc. is very 60's-70's. I think my mom may have decorated my nursery very much in this style, just by dragging in the furniture she had from other rooms, adding a crib, and then painting the walls whimsically herself. Sadly, people didn't think to photograph their ROOMS back then - or at least MY people didn't. I do know it was very close to this style though, and very cute.

Love your blog - such great inspiration, I could stay on here all day :)
