All Made Up & Pretty ~ The Chalkboard Dresser

Isabella and I shopped our house yesterday, finding items to "style" the chalkboard dresser for a beauty shot. We selected light pieces that would create a fresh look when paired with the dresser.

We also brought in the brightest collection of nail polish, perfect for an older girl.

Then I wrote on two of the drawers. It would have also been fun to write a quote here, but I couldn't think of one that didn't sound silly. Do you have a suggestion?

And for anyone who really knows what they are doing when styling a photo, kudos to you! It is not easy, is it? I could certainly use your tips. Next I need to style my kitchen island, for another beauty shot. I have my eye on a really pretty 3-tier cake stand to fill with beautifully decorated cupcakes, along with a platter of fruit and perhaps some linens. I think I should just plan a little party while I'm at it, so the effort doesn't go to waste!

First of all I think your photo is style beautifully. I cannot believe that is chalkboard paint because the finish on the dresser looks perfect!
And the red is so unexpected. Kudos!

I love it!!! Janell you are so modest. You do an amazing job with your styling. It never hurts to know more, but you are doing a great job. Now what are you planning to do with that dresser when you're all done?

What a great looking piece! Love the color, the chalkboard paint, everything!

Awesome!! Have you read "The Help?" It's such an amazing book. Anyway, in the book one of the "help" says this to the little girl everyday and it just warms my heart. "You're a smart girl. You're a pretty girl. You're a kind girl" I think it's a beautiful thing to say to a daughter, if you need a quote idea! :)

Gorgeous. I didn't know that chalkboard paint came in red. I love it and it is styled beautifully. Great accessories. How fun is this. Hugs, Marty

It turned out beautifully, Janell! I love how you can see the trim on the doorway in the shot. Love the light colors of the pieces you and Isabella chose and that they tie in with the chalk color. And the nail polish is so fun! Just wondering if you could play with the mirror and lamp shade a bit; they seem to be too close together. Maybe move the mirror down so it is behind the flowers more, or try a different lampshade, like the narrower one in the home office. Just some thoughts from someone who isn't a stylist. :)

I ADORE that dresser! Love the multi-color nail polish as well - a tween/teen girl's dream. I like what you wrote with the chalk. The only other quote I could think of would be "Wear it Well." Which not only refers to your clothes, but your smile, confidence, etc. Great photo shoot!

Janell @ Isabella and Max said...

'wear it well'...I love that!! Thanks! And michiganhome, great ideas, I do think the mirror could be brought down. It hangs here because this is where a nail already was and not knowing what is to come of this wall in the future I didn't want to start adding more holes. But I just may! Thanks! Janell

That is a great color and I love the name, Mercantile Red. It works so well with the white contrast, especially with the white chalk used to "tag" the drawers.

Very inspirational - what a great vision to start each day!

It looks great! I think it's perfectly styled, and I also think you should have a "kitchen Island" party, and I think you should invite me!

Love the photo, and love the idea of chalkboard paint for a dresser!!!! I am figuring out how I want to refinish my dresser (hand me down from mom), and I think chalkboard paint is definitly in the running.

If the dresser was in my daughter's bedroom, it would read, "Put Away Your Clothes!"

Janell @ Isabella and Max said...

HA!!! Now why didn't this occur to me...it's not like I don't say it everyday!!! :) Janell

It is soooo cute, and I'm with Mary on what it would say. Too Funny

Janell I love the color & it's another fabulous project well done. If it were my youngest daughters dresser and going to Pullman (WSU) with her on Saturday, I'd write, "your mother is watching"!!

Bravo to you x

I love how you styled the photo - all that neutral looks great with the pop of red. Plus I love how the lamp shade coordinates with the dresser hardware. Great project!

I think you did a great job, Janell! Love the addition of the nail polish. I think you take wonderful pictures, but I guess I'd look to some magazine or book pictures for help in the styling.

It looks great! I think the lamp works perfectly with the dresser. And what a fun idea!

As for quotes...I'll think about it but nothing leaps out....

Good job! It looks really pretty. My girls would love it. For styling remember the power of three. Group things in threes. And for quotes check out one of those websites that sells vinyl wall sayings...they have tonnes of quotes. Again love the dresser!

styling is really hard and takes trial and error for sure! Thanks for your nice comment on my guest post at Odi et Amo today!

If I were you, I'd style it with different flowers. something brighter maybe, and possibly a different vase. It seems like you need some texture on top of the dresser, or some type of variation in surface. Everything except the rug and mirror is pretty flat and neutral. I'm sure you're trying to just not compete with the dresser, but it is bright red, so you won't have too much trouble in this pursuit. Your home is beautiful and I'm sure you'll figure it out. :)

Also, I should have said, very good job so far. It is very hard to style, especially since when you're in the room with the items, you love the way it feels, but then when it's a photo and outsiders look in, it can feel totally different to them. I always have to remember that a photo can be TOTALLY different than a room or interior design. It reminds of that site that pokes fun at pottery barn and other catalog styling. You look at Pottery Barn and generally think, wow, that looks great, but if you break it down, you're like, wow, that is weird ... ;D

Yes, true assessment about styling, what I've learned thus far! And the site that picks this all apart sounds like it would be a fun read! Janell

Love love this bright color! And, in my opinion, it looks perfectly styled. If I do a chalkboard dresser in my house, I will write "close" and "me" on the drawers :)

Megan {Honey We're Home} said...

Styling and photographing sure is an art. You've done great- the red chalk paint alone is rad! When I think of my closet, I think this is "where the clothes live" but I love Bryn's quote telling a girl you are smart, pretty and kind. I think all girls (and women!) need to hear this daily:)

Hi Janell,

I think your painted dresser looks fantastic. Love the colour of the paint and I like that you have written on it with chalk. I don't have any quotes today, sorry! The three tiered cake stand sounds great. Hope you will share when that is done. Have a great weekend.
Take care
