We began by finding a Michael's coupon and headed off to the store. We found a nice selection of bird houses for nearly nothing, and spotted the little ones on sale for a mere .49 cents!
First the bird houses were painted with a coat of primer. This will help them stand up to the elements.
After the primer dried, out came our collection of acrylic paints and brushes, and the painting began.
All of the houses were worked on at the same time, painting one section and moving on to another house as that area dried. The bottoms were also painted as they will be seen when placed along the fence.
This kept Isabella and Max occupied for a hours. (Well, Isabella hours, Max an hour.) If you are a mom at home with kids for the summer, you know the beauty of this!!
Later today we will find a spot on the fence to hang them. I'll post those pictures tomorrow and will also show you how Max stopped being so meticulous soon after this picture was taken. His finished bird house is...interesting!

Great idea! We are definitely headed to Michaels :)
Such a cute idea! I can't wait to see pics of the finished product!
So cute! I love craft projects that parents and kids can do together (although mine are a little young for this) it's definitely something I'll try in the future.
Those are the cutest bird houses!
Great project and night bright colors. I cannot wait to see them on the fence. They will really brighten up your yard!
Cute craft project! I fee you on keeping the kids occupied for any amount of time...take it when you can get it!
Oh the boys would love this! Isabella and Max did a great job on the houses. Love the fun colors!
I can't wait to see tomorrows post!
What a supermom! This is a great idea for keeping the kiddies busy in the summer. We may have to check out Michael's too :)

They are such nice bird houses and your children can paint beautifully. If I do any such painting projects with my children (14,12,10 ) the end products look like they ve been done by someone on hallucenogenic drugs !
What a fun idea. Back when bird house collections were really popular my mother-in-law had a collection that she kept on the top of the kitchen cabinets in their summer home. My son made her a gingerbread house birdhouse at Christmas one year. It took him hours to paint all of the little details but she loved it.
Zoe, too funny! Sounds like the final result of the house Max painted!
What a fun project! Will you be putting any kind of a protective coating on the birdhouses since they will be outside?
Great project!
Yes, I'll show that in tomorrow's post! Great question.
What a great craft idea for the children. They look fabulous. Hugs, Marty
Brilliant! Summer fun that keeps the kids busy and provides memories for years to come.
Janell: This is too funny as I have a post drafted about using decorative bird houses in the yard....I've only been waiting b/c I keep forgetting my camera when I go to my parent's house....my mom has them all over a section of the yard mounted on skinny tree trunks for lack of a better description. Cannot wait to see yours on the fence....and what a fun project to do with the kids!
Janell - from one parent to another thanks for the share!!
great idea

We painted bird houses at summer camp! I was always the girl who took hours to paint anything: Isabella is a girl after my own heart!
what a great idea and it gives them a chance to be creative - they'll be very proud of their little houses! : )
How wonderful! What great summer memories! You're a fabulous mom!
What a fun project!! You are such a fun Mom!
I was happy looking how it turn out beautifully, but broke my heart at the same time.
My mother in law passed away couple of months ago. and the last time she watch my girls. they went to Hobby Lobby and get a bird house and painted it. I was stunned with the idea and love the outcome.
My girls had their birdhouse displayed at each own desk.
Excellent idea Janell...
So cute!
My backyard looks kinda drab with all the dead flowers and such! I will SO be doing this with my kids next week! Great idea and love all the bright colors!

Great idea! Hubby and I use to make bird houses. We still have one left that we made to look like an English Tudor, like our home. I should put it outside, but I'm afraid it will get ruined in the elements. I guess I keep it for sentimental reasons.
sweet idea! i am going to show this to my daughter, it would be a fun project for a summer craft with friends.

I am moved! Especially now that I am an advocate of birds. I love the colors your kids put on the bird houses. Cool stuff!
Bird Houses
I adore your birdhouses. I can't wait to go to Michael's and buy as many birdhouses as I can find. My children are going to love this project.
Thanks,
Dee
