Bird House Happiness!

An afternoon of painting later, all the bird houses were looking very colorful!

To help the houses stay pretty a bit longer, they were covered with a protective coating of clear polyurethane.

Here is Max's contribution to the project. He decided to name his house "Penney's Church", after a cat in our previous neighborhood who always found a way into our backyard. We had similar bird houses hung on the fence there, so I get that connection, but the church part? I've gotten no explanation despite my inquiries.

Screw hooks were used to hang the houses with rope loops. I thought it would look great to paint them as prettily as the houses had been painted.

The other houses were hung with OOK hardware. Screw eye bolts, hanging wire and picture hangers.

Max insisted his bird house be hung on a tree, and likes that it appears as if it is floating. Works for me.

Okay, so now one corner of our yard is looking cute. Hum...it is a long summer, we may be revisiting this project another day!

I am in love with this idea! Our youngest son made a birdhouse when he was tiny and painted it as any 4 year old would with lots of colors mixed together. It still hangs in our back yard. Never would I have thought to hang houses on a fence like this. It is truly a great way to add life to the space. Gee, I wonder if I could talk my teenager into painting again....

They turned out great! And they look so cute hanging on the fence!

I swear, Max reminds me of my Nick! They move to the beat of their own drum. I kinda like that about him;-)

They are so precious. I work with the kids every other Saturday at my church this is something that we might do this weekend.

They look fantastic. It is such a nice addition to the fence (and the tree ;-) in your backyard. I love the creativity and the bright colors too. Very smart idea to apply the polyurethane.

The bird houses look terrific. My eldest son Matt loved making them as a young man. It's great fun for kids and sure gives them a sense of pride.

Tell Max wonderful job!

Absolutely charming ! It's like a little village, and the best part is that you made it together. What a treasure. :-) Enjoy your summer day !

Great idea! I did something similar for Christmas, bought wooden ornaments to paint. My son did his own thing too by painting his snowman black! It is a conversation starter ever Christmas! What is fun is that your project will be fondly remembered in years to come!

Thanks so much for this idea. I loved it so much I went out to Michaels and had a bird house painting day with my kids this afternoon! This was a great idea for incorporating kids help in decorating. If you have anymore I would appreciate the help, as would many other mom's during the long summer days:) Maybe a new ideabook? Ideas on how to incorporate kids and decorating? Love your style and found your blog a few months ago, and is one I have been enjoying to check often. It is nice to find someone near my area, I live north of Seattle, so the stores you mention are all ones I recognize. I also really appreciate your use of fabrics, it definetly infuses personality into your decorating and has made me appreciate fabric choices in a whole new ways. Thanks!
