This Week's Ideabook on Houzz: Dressing Rooms & Walk-In Closets

closets contemporary closet

What is it about a dressing room or large walk in closet, all beautifully arranged, that just screams glamour and luxury? It says there is enough space to go around and some of the square footage can be spent on housing the owner's beautiful collection of clothing and accessories.

I love clothing...so much so that I ended up studying fashion design and worked in that industry for many years. During that time, a friend of mine lived in a very large apartment with a Jack & Jill bath off her bedroom leading into another bedroom. But was it used as a bedroom? No! Instead the walls were lined with custom floor to ceiling cabinets and an island placed in the middle of the large room, with endless drawers for accessories and jewelry. And I think what really set this room apart were the two large windows with a window bench placed between them for seating. Add in a couple of full length mirrors placed on the back of the doors to the bath and hall, and this was a slice of paradise. Apparently that space has had a lasting impression on me!

To view some equally outstanding closets and dressing rooms, both classic and creative, read my Houzz Ideabook here. And then, take a look at the closet I share with my husband! This image could not be included in the Ideabook for obvious reasons.

However, I am so inspired by all the photos I selected from Houzz for this piece that I'm beginning to think something can be done with ours. First I need to clear out all the extra lampshades. I must have taken the quote, "bring your own lampshade somewhere there's a party" a bit too literally!

  1. Our closet looks like yours. Very narrow. No room for an island that's for sure! I can't wait to see what you do with it.

  3. I've tried to make ours inspiring but it's simply too small. Someday I dream of a closet like one of these.... come on lottery numbers! : )

  4. I'm nuts for the closet with that amazing rug. I'm wishing to wallpaper my closet with a large scale floral. Allowing me to inject some girlyness into our master but hidden. Can't forget to add a chandelier!

  5. Sigh. I have a nice walk in and I've done my best to dress it up a bit but it needs more work. I think my shoes need their own shelving! I could at least add a chandy. Hmmm... One more thing to add to the "to do list"!

  7. I LOVE closet ideas!! My closet runs the length of a spare room and then spills out...I would love to transform the whole room into one big closet and dressing room since there is a bathroom within the suite, too....I collect all pics that I can find of closets!

  12. Beautiful spaces! I dream of having a dressing area one day. I just feel like you can better see all of the items you own in a space like that. Well, a girl can dream right? Thanks for sharing these images.

  14. We have an open walk in closet, which is all a part of one big room and, which is also our sitting room area where I have my vanity. We had enough wall space to move what were two armoires that were part of our old headboard on each side of my hubby's dresser. Because it matches, it looks built in. I love our space because we can get ready in the morning, if we have a similar schedule going, and chat a bit. We added this room on and were able to design it how we wanted. Can you tell I love these spaces, too? : )

  16. I also love the idea of having an island for accesories and jewelery in the middle of a room/cupboard but unfortunately you need a lot of free space to do something like that!
And hey I'm here thinking man I wish I had your cupboard, mines fairly decent in size (3 doors long) but it's no walk-in!

  17. Hi Janell,
the dressing rooms and walk-in closets are definitely gorgeous... I'd like your blog to be featured on my sidebar as a "fave blog of the week" if okay with you. Any button you want to share? thanks a lot!

  18. My closet is pitiful! It is crying out for a makeover but I just can't seem to get motivated. I have stuff in every closet in our home and poor David has one lone closet! Every week I tell myself "this is the week I'm going to clean out closets"...hopefully I'll soon get in the mood to tackle that mess.

  21. I too longed for a beautiful closet to organize and house my clothing, shoes, bags and accessories. We just built our house and I specifically designed the closet with those thoughts in mind. If you get a chance, check it out:) I'll be posting soon what the "after" looks like. Maybe I can add wallpaper later??

  22. Seldom do I see posts with a few selections but your post is really one of the few that gets my attention. I love these ideas since we share the same interests. Clothes are always a part of my life. Sometimes I think I can never have enough this is why I opt for customized cabinets NJ to fit my space. My personal choice is the second photo. Thanks for sharing. I’ll be coming here more often to see more of your selections.
