Seating Ideas For The Master Bedroom Redesign

While catching up on some of the many blogs I follow, this image caught my eye at Alice Lane Home.

Seeing this settee caused me to rethink the furniture plan for the below corner of the master bedroom. In this original design there was no room for a seating area, which I've missed having in my bedroom. With the goal of creating room for one, the armoire was sold. It was only housing an old TV anyway.

Look at the nice space that has opened up in its absence! Here I had planned on placing the (soon to be) reupholstered bergere chair, with a TV mounted on the wall and a narrow console below. The sight of the gorgeous settee opened my eyes to the possibility for more ample seating, something that can actually be lounged in! (For all those moments I lounge...)

To get a sense of what something larger would feel like here, I brought in the two slipper chairs I had reupholstered last year. They provide a good visual for how a larger piece would look in the room, and I like it. A TV would still be placed above, but the wiring could be run to the other side of the room, with the equipment placed in the open shelf on one of the nightstands. I believe there are remotes that don't need to be pointing directly at the media equipment to work. This would eliminate the need to house anything below the TV, and thus freeing up the area to create a true seating area. In a small room such as this it's important to get strategic with the layout!

Here are some ideas for alternative seating. Very feminine. These styles would introduce an interesting mix paired with the strong clean lines of the headboard. I wonder what my husband will think of them...

I've ordered some swatches and will give it all some thought...but I'm kind of excited!

And as for televisions in a bedroom, people can be very divided on this topic. Obviously I've expressed my thoughts on this matter. I really do enjoy catching up on my favorite shows in the dark hours of winter, while sitting all comfy in bed! What about you, do you have a TV in your bedroom?

  1. I like the idea of the settee. I think one with the larger seat cushions - more comfy! That would really look so good!

  2. I really love this idea. And, you have me thinking about that big armoire in my living room and how useless it really is. . . So bulky and just holding "stuff" I should probably get rid of anyway.

  4. i'm on the fence about tv's in the bedroom. on one hand, i'd like to be able to be in bed and watch shows and movies. On the other hand, i feel like having TV's in different rooms cuts out on family time......I want one, but I don't. I guess when we finish the bedroom we'll see!

  5. I love the chocolate brown settee! It looks like a linen fabric? T.V. yes, but I prefer to read before sleep!

  6. That brown settee is the best! I hope you get it. I thought more about my cane back chair for my bedroom and realized that I would prefer a wing back chair instead. I'm hoping two will fit in the space (really don't like buying one chair).

And having a TV in my bedroom was a must (I'm scared of the dark!), but my computer monitor went out a few weeks ago and I've been using my TV as its replacement. I haven't had the TV back in the room since and I don't miss it! The boys probably miss being able to come get in bed with us and watch cartoons though:-)

  7. This is a great idea and a nice way to use that space without making it feel cluttered. I have to go with the first chair - it has a nice structure but it would benefit from some pillows.

The room also has great light as well, I am anxious what happens next....

  8. I have had my eye on the Ballard settee for awhile! I do have a tv in my bedroom but it really doesn't get turned on much...just sits an a big armoire with the door closed. Sounds a lot like your scenario!

  9. Love the idea of a settee for your room. As for tv's in a bedroom, we have one in our bedroom and that will never change. It's fun to watch a movie in bed on a Saturday evening or the news while having our Sunday morning coffee. It's a private space and should make you happy.

  10. Love the first settee and the last one. Both are terrific & would love to own them. We have a love seat, a padded bench (as a coffee table) an upholstered chair and an Asian cabinet with a yes...TV. We sit in our bedroom in the evenings more than any other space in our home. Janell your master is going to look incredible!

  11. I say go with the new idea. I think it's feminine feel will compliment your more masculine headboard.

TV...I gotta have it too. There are definitely shows that I wouldn't want my kids to watch (I can't get enough of True Blood - isn't that terrible?) and a tv in the bedroom lets me watch late at night. We've talked about giving it up, too. Just can't do it yet.

  12. mmm...i'm kinda in love with that first settee! i love how the straight lines mimic the headboard. i am so excited to see your room pulled together! you always do the most fantastic job.
and as far as a tv in the bedroom...i really like watching tv in bed, but we don't have room in our master for one right now. however, i have to say, with all of the shows that are available online, and how easy it is to rent movies on itunes, we still get plenty of shows and movies watched in bed!

  13. Love the first and last...particularly the colors! We have a tv behind mirrored doors. Love it for early morning news...or watching something else if football or something is on.

We stare at an ugly eliptical...can't wait to get rid of that monster!

  14. I want to live in your house! I love everything about it. And I have to agree, a TV is a must in the bedroom.
Random question... How tall are your ceilings?

  15. 9' here on the main floor...upstairs just 8'. :)

  16. I am so waiting to see the finished room. It's coming together so well. I'm sure it will be fabulous!

  17. Thanks Janelle. We're planning on painting out kitchen/dingin/living room (all one big room) the same color scheme as your bedroom. I was a little worried that the dark ceiling might make it feel a little too closed in but we have vaulted ceilings (they go from about 8 feet up to 11 feet) so I think it might just work. Our windows and french doors that face East and West so it's been hard to get a color that works well all day in the changing light.

    Thanks again for the inspiration!

  18. the TV saved me when I was home after having my baby, thats a must for me.
    I'm loving the setees

  19. Nope, I've resisted TV in the bedroom, but I confess I enjoy it when we stay in a hotel...

  20. Ooh I think a setee will look great in there! T.V. yes and thats because our bedroom is on the main floor and we don't have any other t.v. but in our basement. Mostly for the kiddos and news at night. I'm a definite reader over t.v.

  21. A tv in the bedroom....only if I didn't have a hubby!

  22. Oh yes, reading! I think I've forgotten what reading is, apart from reading the blogs I follow...

  24. I LOVE those settees! I just bought a bergere chair with that same weathered/burnt oak finish and taupe linen and it is amazing. Can go anywhere! Can't wait to see it done!

  25. I am a fan of a TV in the bedroom....my husband travels a lot too and I'll DVR and watch design shows, etc. I also like to watch the news as I am getting ready in the AM (although more often than not my daughter is watching Dora or Sesame!) I like the direction you are going....love the settee.

  26. No tv in my bedroom. My hubby is open to the idea, but I like having the bedroom a quiet place. We have the tv on all day....or it seems that way! I've also found having the tv in the bedroom seems to promote eating in the bedroom...and I don't like crumbs in the bed!;)

Having said that, I'm in bed right(recouping from minor knee surgery) now and have my mini dell to keep me occupied. A tv might be nice for a situation such as this!

I LOVE the sitting area in the bedroom. It's so nice to have a place to put your shoes on without messing up the bed. Love your choices too!

  27. Love the larger seating area idea! Love the 2nd and 3rd option maybe upholstered with the fabric you were going to use for the chair?

We currently do not have a tv in the bedroom but I think we we redo it a small flat screen will come in.

  28. Love the idea of a settee! I would love a sitting area as well but I just don't know where....Once the kids are in bed my hubby and I love to snuggle in bed and watch our favorite shows, don't worry, not every night..hee hee :) Have a great day!

  29. Love the settee options. They are so pretty but won't overwhelm your bedroom.

  30. I love TV in my cozy bed, year round. We have two television areas and my husband prefers to watch sports (I'm all set with the random organ playing, crowd chanting, and other annoyances that seem to go together with televised sports), so my TV room is the bedroom and I'm quite happy with it!

Your bedroom is gorgeous and I think that settee would be perfect.

  31. Isn't funny how one piece of furniture can change your whole design idea for the space? At least that happened for me and my living room. I haven't even started on my master bedroom design. Mine is so plain and horrific...so I dont have a TV in mine, although I will incorporate one when the room is finished.

  32. A sette would look great in the corner as their is plenty of room, at least from what I can see in your picture. You are a magician of DIY and I wish I had an ounce of your abilities. Thanks for sharing.

  33. Yes I have a tv in the bedroom and really only use it in the morning.
As for the equipment, in my family room I have it on the other side of the room in a cabinet. You just need a wireless eye.

  34. Love any seating in a Master Bedroom and that settee is adorable. Not too big yet serves it's purpose. And I loved your bedskirt, by the way!

  35. I love the settees you're looking at! And I agree: a seating area in a master is such a wonderful luxury -- totally worth trying to work it in.

  36. No TV in our room or any bedroom in our house. It is just a quirk of mine. Tv in den and familyrooms only.

  37. I was anti-TV in the bedroom until I had children ... it's great to be able to turn on Dora at 6 AM on a Saturday, roll over, and go back to sleep!

  38. I actually only have a TV in my bedroom. When I have guests, we never watch TV. Ever. I have a group of friends that get together once a week for wine night, but we sit and talk and have a great time. I am single and live alone, so the TV in my bedroom feels like a huge luxury. Plus, my bedroom is quite large, so I have a sofa from Pier 1 (bought for $399 as opposed to $1099 because a string was hanging from it!!) and a chair. I don't think I can ever downsize after enjoying this aspect of my bedroom. I love the chocolate brown settee. That is actually the color of my bedroom walls - that beautiful, luscious Ralph Lauren brown. It feels decadent.
