In my case this was quite easy. For the most part I simply moved the furniture and bedding from the master bedroom in our previous home into this room, painted and added a few new accessories.

But for awhile now I've been wanting to shake up this room a bit, make it lighter and add more color. Not an earth shattering necessity, I realize, but then I was given a few reasons to move forward with a redesign. First, one of the lamps broke recently when I bummed the clock. It fell into the lamp, breaking the glass balls. Next, Max crawled into bed one night with, of all things, silly putty grasped in his hand. If you don't already know this...that stuff stains and there is no getting it out. The sheets and duvet in their current state are proof of this. If these small problems were not enough to warrant a redesign, another incentive has come along! More about that in the next couple of days. But in the meantime, before the room is taken in another direction, let me share a few additional photos of the room and let's give this room a proper send off!

As the bedroom is quite small and faces a shaded backyard, it tends to be a dark room. My original design for the space embraced these qualities, creating a soothing room of muted tones, with a little silk and crystal thrown in to add a bit of shimmer.

For example, the silk shantung drapes and crystals hanging from a vintage pagoda chandelier, found at a local store. (The fixture was brought into this room from the Vintage Modern Powder Bathroom in my previous home.)

The ceiling is painted SW Dapper Tan, which is a few shades darker than the SW Universal Khaki walls. I love the how the lights of the chandelier glow against the ceiling. This reflection certainly wouldn't be as dramatic against a ceiling painted white.

The glass lamp bases and candle holders add addition luster, while my favorite element in the room has to be the hand painted criss cross texture on the wall behind the headboard. It was intended to resemble a tweed fabric, with the idea of bringing a masculine element into the room.

The Colette bedframe, with its pewter nail head trim, is from Crate & Barrel.

Finally, an ivory shag rug was layered over the darker carpet, bringing in wonderful texture and a large light element to prevent the room from becoming too dark.

While I've enjoyed this retreat tremendously, I am very excited about the new direction I have in store for the room. There are several new DIY projects planned and I've selected a few fabulous new fabrics and colors to work with as the starting point. Stay tuned...

Ugh, how I hate silly putty!
Can't wait to see your changes :)
This project of yours is the one I been waiting for since you mention it from your previous post.
Why? because my masterbedroom had just bed and chase and TV on it.
I guess since it easy to hide it from visitor it's the one i didn't decorate yet.
But I do paint it with SW Universal khaki coz, I like the cool color of your room and get the same bedcover at Elm West like the one you used at client. Love it!
Cant wait for new inspiration...
Oooh, I can't wait to see where you're going with this.
Woohoo! I'm super excited about this redesign! I can't wait to see what you have in store for us (I mean it!). Are you going to share more tomorrow or do we have to wait all weekend?! I'm so anxious!!!
i cant imagine the room looking any better. your whole house is beautiful! so your walls are painted? or is that wallpaper? i've been thinking about putting grasscloth into the master but i like what youve done as well! i'll have to go back and read your past posts to learn more!
I agree that my favorite element is the hand painted criss crosses on the wall. From the photos it absolutely gives you that feeling of a rich fabric (I'm guessing it has a lot to do with the colors you chose and the delicate hand used in painting it -- did you do it yourself?).

I am staying tuned for sure! I can't wait to see what you come up with!
Have a pretty day.

I think silly putty is a rite of passage! Hot pink was my daughters color of choice. :-/ I love your rooms...can't imagine what you have up your sleeve for the redesign!
The drapes you have hanging are just what I'm looking for for my OWN master redesign! Hubby & I decided we were tired of being the last room to get any attention.
Your bedroom is lovely and could just stay as is. However, I do agree that if you lightened it up it would be more fresh. I am always getting bored with things and want to make changes. Have fun with the new look!
Your bedroom is so beautiful I can't wait to see how you change it up! I totally agree with doing your master bedroom first, I mean really it's the room I spend most of my time in!
We are on the same page!! I'm been gathering paint and fabric samples for our master. I'm ready for a change as well! Looking forward to your transformation!

I too want to spice up the bedroom so to speak. I am looking for some fabric to inject a bit of colour via pillows, throws and art work. Can't wait to see what you come up with!
I am so excited to see the transformation of your bedroom. Your previous master bedroom was one of the inspirations for my own bedroom, long before I ever stumbled across your blog. Imagine my surprise when I did find your blog and in the process of devouring the posts about your current master, realized that you were the creative genius behind my favorite inspiration bedroom ever!!
I have the same bed....but I decided to use blue as my accent color. Sadly, I've never been able to quite pull the whole room together. It has long been a 'work in progress'. I too have a rather dark master bedroom overlooking a shaded back yard. I haven't yet decided if the blue (Benjamin Moore Brittany Blue - 1633) was the right choice for the walls. I wanted a pale smokey grey/blue but the color looks much brighter on the wall than on the color chip. I often day dream of re-painting the walls.....but am unsure of what else to do.
Needless to say, I will be eagerly awaiting your upcoming posts!!
I'm in love with your lamps. Waiting to see if I can get the inexpensive version at Target.
I love all of your designs. I am redoing my master right now also. It has been ignored since we moved into our house three years ago. I love the criss cross painted wall. I would love to see a tutorial of how you did it.
you always produce such amazing work. looking forward to see what's on your mind, now!
Cannot wait to see what you do here!
Your room is such a restful retreat and I've always admired it. A yummy upscale hotel and spa kinda of weekend vibe. I'm sure you have some lovlies that await for us in the transformation. I'm all eyes..bring it on!! Enjoy your day! Maureen
Janell, I'm a huge fan of the current room but I know the next thing you do with it will be even more wonderful.
I'm laid low with a cold today and trying not to be too glum that, having moved into our house more than 2 years ago, I still haven't "finished" our master.
Cannot wait to see what you do (although I do love your linen effect on the wall). I swore in this house and didn't do it but in the next the Master Bedroom will get early attention.....a retreat is so important....espcially now that I have kid(s)!
One thing that every designer has in common with one another is that we love change! Bravo for finding reasons to bring that change about (you were going to do it anyway...tee hee) I love the linen texture and I like the headboard and nailheads. You've got some great accessories that should transition well. Can't wait to see what you do.

This room is so beautiful, but I know what you mean about wanting a change. I can't wait to see what you've come up with! Smiles!

Yikes - silly putty! At least it's a good excuse for a room redo :-) I always love your redesigns and I'm sure this one will be no exception. Looking forward to it!
I think its great that your changing your bedroom around, I'm excited to see what you make of it. But I really love the texture you have on the wall. My other half hates wallpaper...so my idea of a grass wallpaper is long gone. :( How did you do the faux finish?
Wow!! It is stunning now, I can't wait to see the changes!
Your lamps look terrific, and I am laughing because Homegoods has also spoiled me. Like you, I think a lamp should be $39.99!! Always!!
This is so beautiful! You have really created a very stylish and warm sanctuary-I love it!
I am loving your blog-I am going to spend all morning looking at all your old posts!
Best wishes,
Natasha.
I think it's beautiful the way it is but looking forward to seeing the transformation! We haven't ventured beyond 'public' rooms because there is so much to be done but I would love a retreat. Maybe I'll have to move it up the list? :)
