I'm absolutely thrilled that two of the projects done in this room will become articles for HGTV's website. Also, over the next few months I will be working on several other projects around the house that will find their way to HGTV.com. I am going to be one busy girl and that calls for a great space to get some rest at the end of a long day!
The first project for the Master Bedroom is to upholster a portion of the wall behind the bed. Won't this create a dramatic headboard? Here is the rough sketch that inspired the design.
As the upholstered wall will become the focal point of the room, the first decision was to select just the right fabric. All the others selections will take a lead from this choice, so it better be spot on! The fabric also needs to coordinate with the colors and patterns in the adjoining bathroom. The Master Bath Redesign remains one of my favorite spaces, and one of the goals for the Master Bedroom is to create a space that visually connects with this bathroom. I had my heart set on a geometric print and this is what I found...

Bocce in Cocoa, a fabric sold at Calico Corners. This striking pattern fits all the criteria and I love it! It repeats the colors of the Thomas Paul print used on the bathroom chairs, as well as the tones of the cabinetry.
Another project will be to cover the lampshades sitting on the pair of lamps found at HomeGoods, which just received a makeover.

Waverly's Canton Bazaar print in walnut was selected for this project. The print creates an interesting mix next to the Bocce fabric and references the pagoda chandelier, which is staying in the room.

And then the floorplan. The room is really quite small, when you consider it is a master bedroom, and look at all the doorways! The size and all the openings make for a challenging space with limited options for arranging furniture. The previous furniture layout was tight with the large upholstered bed and an armoire placed in the corner, which didn't do much except house an old TV. So both of those are gone...gasp! Yes, sold on craigslist. By replacing the bedframe with the upholstered wall headboard about eight inches will be gained at the foot of the bed. Not much I realize, but in a room only 12 feet deep even this makes a difference.

With the armoire removed the entire far corner opens up, allowing for a seating area. A wall mounted TV will be placed to the side of the chair, with a thin console table placed below. The chair is the one I purchased on eBay, which was intended for my design studio. But with that project on hold, it will be a wonderful addition to the bedroom. The chair will be reupholstered in Shadow Branch. Isn't the Chili Pepper color fantastic?!

I've already removed the old materials and about 500 staples, literally! The chair is already looking better.

So, with a lot to do it is time to get to work. As you are reading this I am probably cutting and sewing panels of the Bocce fabric as I begin the first project. I'll have progress to show soon...

Wow!! Congratulations on your HGTV gig, that is just amazingly cool.
I love this post. I love seeing your sketches of the space, it helps me to see the space drawn out.
Thanks again for a wonderful post!!
How exciting for you!! I can't wait to see the results because I am loving everything so far!! Congrats on the HGTV gig!
Happy for you for HGTV project!
Now I'm more excited about this room redesign.
You finally get rid of the bed? HOOAH!!... dont get me wrong love that bed, but seems like everybody in their brothers ( Magazine) had one or atleast same style.:>
Also, love the chili pepper color fabric you are really giving your room a punch of color. I guess the Hubby's okey with that. If I remember it right you said he's not afraid of color before his office makeover.
I really like the idea of TV mounted on wall plus small console under it. it make the space more spacious.
Can't wait for the room reveal!
Congrats on the HGTV project. How exciting ! All the plans for the bedroom sound wonderful. I am looking forward to seeing the transformation.
I love the colors you're using!
And I've been thinking about an "upholstered wall" in our hallway -- it will be interesting to see how far away it is from what you've got in mind.

Love the fabric selections, Janell! I'm looking forward to seeing the headboard wall.
This will be so fun to follow along! I know it will be amazing. CONGRATS!! And good luck - especially with that wall upholstery thing. It sounds so hard!
This is going to be spectacular! And, why aren't you on Design Star??? :)
Oh Janelle, I forgot got the same chair at neighbors yard sale for $30. this old couple never used the chair just for display at their foyer.
Do you mind giving a tutorial for re-upholstering the chair.
I see you take out the foam. Are you replacing it with a new one and 500 staples?!. looks like a lot of undertaking. :>
I plan to put it on my daughter room. Hope you have time to share the chair makeover.
Thank's again...
So incredible you'll be featured on HGTV, what an honor ! And BTW, you are so reading my mind these days. I'm staring at my MB wall and wondering what can I do to add a punch of drama and style behind the bed ? Wallpaper ? Then I read this . . . so excited to see what you do with that upholstered wall, and I absolutely adore your fabric choices !!!!
Hi - just found your blog. I live in Seattle want to come over and do my bedroom? Fabulous blog.

I have been toying around with the idea of upholstering a part of the wall behind my bed, but just had no idea what to do. I look forward to your always detailed and helpful instructions. The elements you've put together so far look very beautiful...can't wait to see it transform!
OMG, congrats!! What exciting and well deserved press!
PS- I am taking a drawing for interior decorators class and we will be doing a ton of renderings. I SO wish we lived closer so you could give me advice and help me, you are so great at it!
How very exciting!!! Congratulations on your success ~~
Wow, lots to say about this post.
Firstly, hearty congrats on your HGTV link-up and I'm sure it's very well deserved.
I'll also look forward to seeing how the room evolves - will you be bringing in the chili color somewhere other than the chair?
And finally, I love following your fabric links to discover new suppliers!
Lana, I'm laughing that you are happy I FINALLY got rid of that bed! It would have never occurred to me someone would be over this style, but you bring up a great point!
And the chili color, yes...there will be plenty of opportunity to repeat this color and also want to bring in some of the rich gray blue color of the walls in the adjoining bathroom. Art, accessories, drapes, bedding, pillows...
Janell
Gasp! Love love love all of the fabrics and as I glanced at each one I thought it was my favorite until I got to the next one! So excited about the chinoiserie direction this room is taking. You know how I love that!
Gush gush gush...I love this room already. No big surprise there!
LOVE IT! I was also thinking of doing perhaps a large upholstered wall area (to cover up a dated window issue) I can't wait to see how this turns out! SIGH I just know it will be amazing!
you are the best thing that's happened to HGTV. let's get you going online, so the next step will be your own show! I'll definitely tune in!
HGTV online? Next you'll have your own show. I would be glued to the TV if that happens.
Question...Are you doing anything with the finish on your chair or just changing the fabric?
I can't wait to see how it all turns out.
I sanded the frame and I'm thinking I'll paint it ivory to coordinate with the lamps and the colors in the fabric. It will look fresh and modern and continue the theme of bringing more light elements into the room!
Janell
HGTV?! Holy moly, Janell!!! Congratulations, you deserve it!!! How super exciting, I'm an HGTV addict. The bedroom is going to beautiful, love that geometric fabric you picked out for the headboard!
Janell, I told you HGTV would be calling! Remember!??? I am so thrilled for you!!! Bravo! Go Janell!
I love Homegoods. Ussed to shop there all the time when we lived in LA. Sadly enough, no HG in Seattle. Do you have one in Portland?
My beautiful friend Kendra lives in Portland and I have promised to visit this summer. I will contact you and try to drag you away from all your lovely projects for a fun coffee break!

Kudos to you..you are so talented! You must have been biting your knuckles as the truck drove away with that beauty of a bed. What a lucky person that was! Enjoy your day. Maureen
Janell, what exciting news! I can't wait to read your articles!
Hi, Janell--
Thanks for the shout out to Calico Corners--love the Bocce fabric selection for the upholstered wall.
Are you putting the fabric directly on the wall? Over batting? Or are you covering a multi-panel screen with the fabric and then putting it flat on the wall behind the bed? Can't wait to see the finished room!
Best,
Jan
I cannot wait to see your process and choices here! I really love the first fabric!
Creative work by your side i am impressed and the fabrics which are being used in the interior are suiting the design very much.
