The Kitchen Island Gets A New Look

As I said in yesterday's post, I am soooooo excited to be painting the kitchen island. When work was originally done in this room, I elected to leave the island stained. It would provide a nice contrast to all the light cabinetry and keep the space from becoming too white. Besides, if I changed my mind it could always be painted later...and later has now arrived.

Before work began I had to make sure a few "before" photos were taken. The pendant kit fixtures have been installed with the new shades attached. Looking good, and they will be even better once covered in fabric.

Not to get distracted, but can we take a moment to talk about the backsplash? I am still thrilled this tile was selected to replaced the original backsplash. The simple subway tiles have a contemporary beveled edge, which create the most beautiful shadowing when light falls across them. Interested? Check out the Metro Lanka subway tile in Alabaster here. (They must be fabulous, Sarah Richardson recently used them in her Sarah's House series, the Farmhouse!)

Then the work began. The new pendant shades were removed to be covered with Robert Allen's Cat Cradle fabric in Amber.

The holes on the knotty alder were filled in. Here I got help! One of the talented painters who worked on my kitchen the first time around came back to work on the island...thank goodness.

Edges on the door profiles were filled with caulk to eliminate deeper recessed areas, which would be hard to cover evenly with paint.

After the wood fill and caulk dries the surfaces will be sanded.

The countertop and floor surrounding the island are covered with paper...let's not ruin the work that has already been done in these areas!

The sample door shows the new color the island is to be painted, SW Gray Area. Here's hoping the right color was picked! (And if you don't like the color, I'm blaming it on your monitor...)

I'm using Sherwin Williams ProMar oil based paint. This is the same product which was used on the other cabinetry. It has held up wonderfully over the last year and a half, so why try something new!

The interior of the island gets lined with paper. The primer and paint will be sprayed on to achieve a smooth finish, and the paper will protecting these areas during that process.

Prior to painting, plastic sheeting was hung around the island, creating a protective barrier. Sprayed paint seems to travel through the air endlessly, and this barrier will contain the paint while causing the least amount of disruption as work proceeds. The fridge and pantry can still be accessed!

A clever little entrance! If things move forward on schedule, I should have images of the island covered with primer tomorrow and then the painting will begin.

Love the new pendants! Just purchased similar ones for over the island in my new home. What size are the drum shades? Would the kit accomodate a large shade for over a dining table? Can't wait to see the island, the color you chose is gorgeous!

Funny, I seem to repaint a major project when my husband travels too. Sneaky....
Can't wait to see the transformation.

Woot! I never question your colors because they are always dead on! Well, atleast from what I've seen. I can't wait to see more! I really wasn'e expecting to see a post tonight, but I'm glad I saw this! I'm still loving the cats cradle;-)

Have a great night!

It's so much harder to paint an island than to just remove cabinet doors and send them out. Looking forward to seeing the end result. Carol

I can’t wait until its finished! Its going to look amazing. Oh, and P.S. thank you for sharing the link to your back splash. Adding a back splash to my kitchen is on my to do list…I’ve been eyeing subway tile.

I am working fast, a bit too fast actually! I was given some tight deadlines at HGTV.com and heading to the coast for a vacation later in the month...so there is a fire under me to be sure!!

The pendants measure 7" tall by 11" wide, I wanted to go as large as possible here at the island without going too big. We'll see if this ends up being the magic size. The Pendant Kit from Shades of Light used can definitely hand a MUCH larger shade and would work very well at a dining room table or nook...Hey, I just may do that myself!!

Are you painting yourself or having the same process done as the main cabinets. I imagine it is a tough job to paint? Love the color you selected and cannot wait to see more.

PS--I replaced our family room rug with one from a Stark Sample Sale last fall while my husband was out of town....I didn't think he'd notice....but he did. We are lucky they love us, eh?

can't wait to see it finished. Gray Area is one of the many colors I've looked at, too. great choice!

best wishes for a quick finish. I know how disrupting these things can be...

Ha! Sometimes the less said the better. I'm sure he'll love the results! The color is going to look so good.

The island is getting painted using the same process that was used on the main cabinets. I am very fortunate, I've used the same painters a lot and given them a lot of referrals so they not only do excellent work for me but always cut me a great deal. It's worth it, this project would take me at least a full week of work if I were to do it myself! Janell

How did you find your painters? I'm guessing this is something that is more of a "specialty" and I'm not sure where to even start in trying to find someone locally to do something like this. I suppose I could ask the painters who did some work on my house and go from there?

Can't wait to see the end result!

This painting co. does a lot of work for the builder of my home...so they not only have extensive experience painting walls but also painting islands, built-ins, etc. They have it down to a science and make it look easy. I would start by finding just such a company and see if they have experience painting cabinetry. Hope this helps...Janell

p.s. try AngiesList as well

it's going to look so good I'm sure! I love the wood floors in your kitchen.
I would like to do some kind of pendant lights in our kitchen (right now we just have recessed lights) but as the kitchen is open to the family room I will have to find something that goes with the lighting / ceiling fan in there, or else it could get too expensive to replace lighting in both rooms!

i love seeing how the professionals prep! It's such a good way to know what you should do if you attempt something yourself and it's a good benchmark if you are hiring a professional for your own home.

I love your stools! Where did you get them! Beautiful room!

First, love the Robert Allen fabric for the pendants. Second, love that you are painting the island -- it will really make a feature of it, especially since the floor is dark. Are you painting the same color as the cabinetry?

LindsB said...

Ahh, I thought we were going to get to see it all finished already! I guess I will have to wait a little bit longer :)

To answer where the stools were found:

From a Portland Store, Hip, about 7 years ago...I've seen similar ones at DWR an Dania Furniture...also a great place for stools is Overstock.com

Good luck and thanks for asking! Janell

I would love it if you did a little tutorial when you cover the shades with fabric.

just curious why you did the spray painting vs a brush? seems like all the taping and plastic would be difficult.

thanks

Janell @ Isabella and Max said...

Great question Jane Ellen! I love the smooth surface that results from spraying, no brush marks. The end result is a finish that looks similar to cabinets sprayed professionally in a factory. Fortunately, I have painters that I work with often (for clients and myself) and it is amazing to watch them tape an area...it literally takes them a few minutes.

Having said all of this, I've also seen great results by painting with brushes, Censational Girl for example. She painted cabinetry with wonderful looking results!

Thanks for asking, enjoy your 4th!! Janell

Hi Janell, Thanks so much for stopping by my blog and leaving such a sweet comment. I've been lurking on your blog for ages, but I thought I'd come out now that you found me :) I wanted to let you know that your kitchen has inspired me. We have very similar granite and dark wood cabinets that I have been wanting to paint forever now. Thanks so much for picking the colors for me :) I just hope mine looks half as good as yours when I'm done!
