So off to HomeGoods I went...and just look at what I found for the target price of $39.00 each! Kind of ugly, right? Cobalt blue is not a color to be included in the bedroom color palette. But the shape was right, so I decided they were worth the effort it would take to change their color to exactly what I wanted.
Back home, the socket and cord were taped and wrapped with plastic to protect them from getting covered with paint, while the black base was left exposed. I decided to streamline the look of the lamps and paint both the lamp body and base the same color and finish.
Next the lamps were sprayed with Rust-Oleum's White Primer. Two coats were applied to make certain the blue was completely covered.
The following day the lamps were sprayed with two coats of Rust-Oluem's Heirloom White.
Between the coats of primer and paint the surfaces were lightly sanded with 220 grit sandpaper, removing a few random little bubbles created by the spraying process. The lamps were also wiped down with a cotton rag between coats.
The last step was to spray the lamps with Rust-Oluem's Clear Protective Finish in Gloss.
Oh my...seriously. I love the result!!
And the makeover of these lamps is not done yet, I have some fun plans to dress up their shades. More on that next week, but in the meantime...have a great weekend!!

Beautiful job! They look fab, and I appreciate the step by step photos and info.
A practical question: how much did all the paint cost, and what sort of spray gun? This would have to be factored in if one didn't already possess said spray gun.
WOW! The clear gloss really is the key here! I will definitely keep this in mind for future projects.
It's amazing how much more expensive these lamps look when you paint them white Love the shape. Love HomeGoods!
Love how you transform this lamp...
from Ugly to Elegant. =(
excellent choice! and that high gloss is amazing. what a makeover!
Ah yes! Fabulous.
So gorgeous!! Great job! I love lamps....The gloss really makes them look high end!
To answer Jenny's question, the project took one can each of primer, paint and gloss, so around $10 for the paint supplies. I didn't use a sprayer, just the cans. And I think the key to a smooth finish is lighter but multiple layers with the light sanding and wipe down between layers.
Hope that helps! Janell
Those turned out great, Janell! I probably would have passed right by those lamps as they were. You're right though, I always check out Home Goods {or one of those types of stores} for lamps. I've always gotten some really nices ones, too.
Gorgeous!
Love, love them. I'm so into the gloss!
homegoods.... ahhhh my delight! your new lamps are beautiful!
Those lamps look fabulous! I never thought about using the clear gloss, but I love it!
i love this! looks awesome. the gloss spray really finished it off nicely. i wouldn't have thought that the original blue could've been covered, but the steps you took worked. great find!
Wonderful job!!!
They look fabulous ~~
Janell, these lamps are beautiful! I have a question about a lamp I have. It is a Stiffel - beautiful shape, but I don't like the cream color. Do you think I should try to spray paint an expensive lamp like this? I'm afraid. I'd like try black. What do you think? Oh, and it was a gift 20 years ago. Thanks!
To answer the previous question:
Hum...it is very easy to work on a piece that costs very little because the risk is low. An expensive piece would have me pause and ask a few questions. What if I ruin it, how will I feel? If not great, you may consider having the lamp redone professionally. If you are okay, then perhaps you should practice on another lamp, get your process down and then tackle the real deal. The key was to sand LIGHTLY between layers (and spray lighter layers vs. one heavy one to avoid dripping) and really wipe down the lamps between steps to get any dust away between steps. I hope this helps you make your decision! Janell
Janell, thanks for the advice! I was also thinking of trying to find its "twin" somewhere in Craiglist land. Maybe I'd like it more if it I had two of them. That will kill some time and keep me away from the spray paint for while! Have a great weekend!
Love them!
Did you have any problem with drips?
I spray-painted a pair of lamps that I got for $6 at thrift store. They came out good, but I had a little bit of drips due to the round shape of the lamp.
Any problems?
Now Janell, they weren't that bad to begin with! But, what you've done to them certainly makes the before less than par!!!
Heirloom White looks so good in photos. I'm wondering if its my lighting that make it look unappealing to me. When I turn on my chandelier, it makes that color look a little yellow.
Hi Lakeitha, do you have white trim in your house? If so that could be making the Heirloom white look wrong in your home. My trim is ivory so this color works great in my home, but I just suggested Heirloom White to a client and it looked peach in her home, with all her white trim! So then I suggested Bisque (an off white) to her and that may be a better choice for you, something less creamy.
Janell
Looks good. I LOVE spray paint! I never would of thought to add a layer of gloss. Now they look "brand new"!
I redid a lamp to look similar to yours, but it was a $5 thrift store find. The shape echoes more of a Jonathan Adleresque type lamp.

Wow, those look great!!
Stupid question -- is it possible to paint the cord? I have a chandy that I would like to spray paint, but I wasn't sure how to handle the cord and the chains. Ideas? Thx!!
KLJS, it's a great question. Painting a cord, I wouldn't do it on a lamp as the paint would get worn off with use. But on a chandelier, where the cord won't be moved around and touched (that much), you can get away with it. And the chain will take paint no problem...good luck!!
I'm finally online. My computer is slowly kicking the bucktet:-(
These lamps look totally different from what I was able to see on my phone! The blue was BRIGHT!
The lamps have a great shine to them. Are they still like that or were they wet in the photo?
Where do you get your paint from? Heirloom white is becoming scarce around these parts and I don't think I've seen the Rustoleum clear gloss.
I promise this is my last comment and question!
spelled bucket wrong...
okay, this is my last comment!
HomeGoods definitely rocks when it comes to lamps and home accessories in general! I like how the lamps turned out. I've done this to some of my lamps and am always amazed at what a difference it makes.
In the last two photos the lamps are dry...I'm crazy over the shine. I always get my spray paint from Home Depot, the selection is great and always in stock.
The lamps look amazing! I can't believe the difference the high gloss makes...beautiful.
xo, Sherry
i love the way they turned out! and i love the clear gloss you sprayed on top...a great alternative the the "laquer" spray paint, which is only available in a couple of colors!
I love these! And I love the price!
Kelly
Wow! You are creative! They look excellent! I am impressed.
look amazing!! I love the shine, can't wait to see what you do with your shades! :)
I've used the clear coat spray below and it works wonders!!
Those look amazing, I wouldn't have though to do the clear gloss but clearly that is the key to taking them from looking painted - to looking like they were made that way!
Fabulous!! I love the result...and you can't beat the price. I adore HomeGoods!
Fabulous!! I love the result...and you can't beat the price. I adore HomeGoods!
These are beautiful! Thanks for the tutorial. I will bookmark your post and give this a try. They look prettier than the original one from overstock. Great job!
Totally impressed...they look awesome and cannot wait to see what you do with the shades. Your step by step instructions are great and almost have me thinking I could do this....
Wow! They look fabulous! Just like the overstock one, but so much better : ) I always spray paint items like that too.
love them already!!!!
lamp makeovers are such fun!

Hi Janell,
As others have said, the gloss makes the difference!
I've been wanting to try spray painting something as I see so many here in blog land wield its transformative powers, but I always wimp out when I see all the stuff written in the warnings about carcinogens, etc. Do you have any thoughts on that, and what precautions do you take, if any? Thanks so much.

They look great..HomeGoods is my happy place!! Especially with no children in tow!
They are awesome !!
Janell... these are fantastic. I am working on my daughter's room & using spray paint on a couple of projects. One being the black antique "ish" picture frame from Ikea- turning it into a purple mirror. In your experience with spray paint- it is better to use a flat/satin finish & then use the clear gloss or just go for the color you like in a gloss?
Thanks for your feedback.
Lisa
these look great! I absolutely love Homegood lamps - 5/8 lamps in our home are from homegoods - thanks for the painting tips!
To answer Lisa's question, here is what I think...
For a high gloss finish I'd use the color of choice in satin and then apply the protective finish in clear gloss. The benefit of this method over using just a gloss color is the protective aspect, the piece will handle wear and tear better. I also like how smooth the gloss finish is, much smoother than simply using a gloss color. I hope this helps you make your decision, good luck with your projects!
awesome, i like the white MUCH better.
Oh, I was so sad to hear about the previous lamp since it was my favorite. I love what you did with these. I am on the hunt for lamps, thank you for the inspiration. Now I know I can always change it to my liking.
I love the heirloom white!
Happy SITS Saturday Sharefest
Saw those same lamps at Marshalls in a pretty eggshell blue - love them! Looking forward to seeing what you do with them next!
Ohhhh...I really like these!!! Great job and I look forward to browsing through your blog...I love interior design and decor...
Happy SITS!!
oh my goodness...im in love! Fabulous lamp redo!!
Jana
Janell, you are awesome. The lamps look really great. I see the name Home Goods quite a bit on blogs and wonder if it's the same as our Canadian Home Sense? Hmmm, curious.
Oh la la - gorgeous! Hope you have had a fabulous weekend xxx
Beautiful job Janell! I have seen the great prices at TJMaxx (we don't have a Homegoods) for lamps but never saw beyond the color/style.
Roeshel
They look great. The power of paint!
Ok...You need to put a cork in it...you are just TOO GOOD!!!
Those turned out fantastic! I would have never guesed you could paint something so glossy!
I'm always inspired by your projects although I'm always a little intimidated by paint... it can make such a mess! Love the lamps!
I will take two orders of those to go please.

It is as though you knew I had been trying to get lamps for my bedroom! For months I have been on the hunt for gourd style (or similar) lamps and can only find bright colors or just one instead of a pair. It has become almost an obsession. Well after reading this post the other day I was so excited! I headed out to TJ Maxx to buy two lamps knowing that now I can paint them (have seen others paint lamps and they never looked good, yours look GREAT) and then it was almost as though I had too many choices...which lamps to buy and spray! So I am still without lamps but I know it won't be for long. I LOVE your blog, so much info but mainly I like that you are consistent with posting and that it isn't just magazine photos of other designer's work....THANK YOU!!!
sherry
Wow! They don't even look like they were any other color than white! These are truly fabulous! I am taking done all your tips so I can do a little spray painting!
The gloss really made it pop, love it.
Well dang these turned out amazing!!! I am always so scared to buy something new and redo it!! Thanks for the confidence!! I am loving how easy it is to add the shininess back into it!!
Holy Crap...that was quite the transformation!!! I will have to give that a try!!! Love you blog!
I love it so much I am now painting my homegoods lamp! And I had to mention that you have me enough courage! http://hollysrollercoaster.blogspot.com/2010/07/my-bedroom-is-coming-along.html
You just kept me from hitting the 'add to cart' button at Overstock. I will look for a cheaper version. Your lamps came out great!!!! Thanks for the inspiration.
Wow, who knew you could make them shine like that?
Quick question - what were the bases made from? They look ceramic/glass, but I'm not sure. Just wondering if that finish would work on all materials.
I'm really impressed.
Hi! The bases were ceramic, I do think the reason for the final look was using the gloss protective finish. It made all the difference and the final result looked very similar to the original lamp bases...only in the color I wanted! Thanks for reading my blog! Janell
LOVE!!! Thanks :)
Okay -- I just spent the last hour reading every single post you did on your master bedroom!!!! (even though I'd read most of it before!)
It's really stunning. And I like how you broke up all the posts! Sometimes we bloggers have to stretch out the writing material! ;)
I love this redo - I know these are glass and not ceramic, but I was wondering what you think. I have a ceramic garden stool in a color that just does not fit in with my color scheme. I assumed since it was ceramic that trying to paint it was a no no. But after seeing your post, it seems like it may be possible. Or are the results on ceramic very different from glass - do you know?
Thanks!
Antonia
